Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Casa del Gran Portale is the house of the Grand Portal, so called because of the entrance portal that is decorated with Corinthian columns. The columns are actually half columns made of bricks and more with capitals adorned with sculptures of Victoria, equivalent to the Greek goddess Nike, and the personification of victory.

It’s possible to go into the house where you’ll see several rooms opening onto the vestibule and a small courtyard. Many of the rooms are decorated with frescoes depicting gardens, scenes of Dionysian, satyrs and other nature themes. This is one of the houses that is worth visiting.

Well preserved part of the Herculaneum site. Lead water pipes and catch basis for rain leading to cisterns. Excellent example of the old city.

It is clear that the house with the grand portal was one of status in 79 AD. Amazingly the columns of the villa still stand and the rebuilt garden gives you a feel for how it would have been. The house and complex itself is home to some great mosaics and character. Be sure to check it out!

Casa di Galba is another of the houses in the archaeological sites. Much of the superstructure is intact, forming the shape of the house and the borders of the rooms. There’s not much to see really even after wandering in. The only thing I thought was of note was the brickwork which was an interesting mix of rubble masonry on some of the walls, and square tubular bricks in other parts. I wouldn’t go out of the way to see this building though

Situated towards the top end of the site, this house and courtyard garden is most impressive and should be on any visiting list. Apart from the remaining building and reconstructed garden, a fascinating item is the remains of the original doorway, partially burnt.

Not all of what you see is interesting or awesome. This is one of many nice houses to stroll through. The cross shaped pond is beautiful and unique in Ercolano.

Was obviously a high status house in Herculaneum and boasts a fine mosaic showing Alexander the Great. Original is in the Archeolohical Museum, Naples but here is a great copy in situ. The gardens are expansive and give an idea of how they may have looked in AD79
