Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Went there to run the great Authentic Greek Classic Marathon. Great views, great scenery and above all, the feelings, running a route over 2 000 year old!

Decided to take a visitor to this artificial lake (reservoir) which served as the main water supply to Athens until the end of the 50's. The dam was built mid to end of the 20's, by an American company, to meet the increased demand for water following the large numbers of refugees who arrived from Asia Minor in the decade or so before. It is a gravity dam constructed of Pendelikon Marble, the same as the Parthenon (though of course not polished up & shiny!). The standoffs one would see between cars from opposite directions on the single lane road over the dam have now stopped with the intstallation of traffics lights. Unfortunately access to the pumping area at the bottom of the valley, adorned with a copy of the Athenian Treasury to be found in Delphi, is now not allowed for fear of terrorist activity. However, there is the Fragma (Dam) Cafe where one can sit & drink a coffee or enjoy a bite to eat & the beautiful view. Comments have been made about the prices but yesterday an iced expresso coffee cost 3.80 euro, which is quite acceptable. After, continue to the start of the Marathon Race, the Marathon Musuem, tombs to those fallen in the Battle of Marathon against the Persians, a small, new Olympic musuem, & then the long Schinias, sandy beach which offers organised areas with loungers & umbrellas if you want. The drawback is that you will need to have a car as this is some perhaps 35-45 km from central Athens with, as far as I know, no suitable public transport. However, if you do all or some of the sites I've mentioned afterwards it makes a really good day out, even for children.

The Marathon lake was built around 85 years ago by an American company and it is supplying some of the water Athens uses.
The dam is an impressive pieceof enginering. 85 years later and there are obvious leaks. It is beautiful to watch and walk around it.
There is also a nice cafe on the side which seems to be busy with visitors to teh dam.

Beautiful scenery but couldn’t find a way to walk round it ? Good to see though and the marble dam is impressive.

Marathon Lake is absolutely beautiful, and a "classic" dam make s it more attractive. It is not necessarily a tourist attraction, but a very nice place to stop and relax before heading out to your next destination.

This is a beautiful place to visit when in the area around Marathon. The area is lush with beautiful plants and flowers. There are many birds to watch from the deck of the lake cafe. It is a cool place to escape to when needing a break from the heat of Athens or the sunny beaches of Marathon. The damn itself is a marvel and it is interesting to watch the well orchestrated movement of the cars on the single lane road.
