- Jack Ackerman6 contributionsThe Penguins march is a must see.The Phillip Island trip is always about the miniature penguins. I would recommend upgrading for the closer seats. The penguins are adorable. We also went to a animal sanctuary and the 12 apostles. Gary, our driver, was friendly and quite memorable. The penguins march is a must see.Thank you for your valuable feedback. - flo220New York City, New York359 contributionsDo not miss -- see adorable penguins waddle right by youThe penguin parade is one of the most adorable and fun things to do in Australia. After sunset the penguins leave the ocean and walk over to their burrows/nests to be with their families. We reserved the special/priority viewing and it was worth it to be closer to them waddling by. It does get chilly at night so dress appropriately. Definitely do not miss.Thank you for your valuable feedback. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit to the Penguin Parade despite the cold. - UK-Northants-Family27 contributionsMemorable experienceWe did the Penguin plus option. We sat closely to the very many penguins coming ashore. It was a truly memorable experience that we thoroughly enjoyed. Make sure you wear something warm as the wait can be long and you can easily spend 30 plus minutes just watching the penguins. Our enjoyment was somewhat marred by some of the very officious 'guides' constantly telling people not to take photos. This was such a memorable experience that we and others just wanted to take photos to share with family and friends. There seemed no logic to this rule. Modern phone cameras do not flash or make any noise. The area was covered in literally hundreds of mini lights and even floodlights. Commentary was blared out in Japanese/Mandarin? and people were excited and making quite a lot of noise, so why constantly tell responsible adults to turn their phones off?Thank you for your valuable feedback. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit to the Penguin Parade, although we are sorry to hear that aspects of your visit could have been improved. Our photography policy is in place to protect the sensitive eyes of the little penguins and other wildlife who are sensitive to white-blue light and sudden flashes. We have found that, through trials ran at the Penguin Parade, flash increases substantially when photography of any kind is allowed, and this is why we have this photography policy in place. All lighting present at the Penguin Parade have wildlife filters on them, in a specific range of light as not to disturb or interrupt the penguins and their nightly activities. We do our best to run all messaging and educational talks prior to penguin arrival so as not to bother them. We are sorry to hear that the behaviour and noise of other visitors could have been improved while you were here, but we do greatly appreciate the time you have taken to write your review. We have also created a free gallery of little penguin images and videos, to help you remember your night with and to show off to your friends and family here: https://www.penguins.org.au/attractions/penguin-parade/photo-gallery/Written 20 May 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 December 2023

- LeannieHanoi, Vietnam2,488 contributionsAmazing experience but wrap up as its freezing coldThankfully, we booked our tickets in advance as we saw signs saying that it was sold out when driving over to the island We paid penguin plus, so there were fewer people, and as we arrived early, we were front row on the bench. However, I massively regretted not paying for the underground enclosure simply as it was enclosed. It may be summer in Australia, but it certainly didn't feel it on that beach after with the cold sea air. That being said, it was an amazing experience, we couldn't see the beach very well from where we were, but so many penguins waddled up and past where we were sitting. Such an experience seeing them then close up. The staff made sure that people remained seated, which was good as you sisnt have your views obscured by people standing up in front of you. Had a fairly average hot chocolate on the way out of which its main purpose was to warm me up more than anything else.Thank you for your valuable feedback. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit to the Penguin Parade and your experience at Penguin Plus, despite the cold. We agree that Underground certainly offers that bit of protection from the colder weather, and we hope to see you again in the future for another (hopefully warmer) penguin experience.Written 20 May 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 December 2023
- toffeenoseWalnut Creek, California213 contributionsAdorable penguinsIf you like penguins this is a must do tour, the night we went we saw hundreds The building you set out from has some interesting exhibits and good facilities. We went on a ranger led tour which allowed us to get slightly closer. Our guide was knowledgeable and enthusiastic. My only criticism is banning photography but not providing good photos on their site Understand that flash photos will scare penguins but the photos that you can download are frankly inadequate. They need to do better. For instance if you are with guide allow them to take some photos with your device making sure flash is turned off.Thank you for your valuable feedback. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit to the Penguin Parade, and we appreciate the suggestions you have made in ways we can improve visitor experience in regard to the quality and range of the free penguin images, and our overall photography policy. - Leanne IMelbourne, Australia14 contributionsTickets are overpricedPurchased general ticket viewing, sat in the middle section and could barely see the penguins walk off the shore (it was dark and far from the shore) and they are small. Guy in front allowed us to borrow his binoculars to get a closer look. I would recommend sitting on the far sides of each seating section where it is roped off to get a closer look. This is where the penguins 🐧 walk to their burrows. The best view is from the boardwalk, where you can see them standing at their burrows and waddling around. It is crowded but you can still get a good close look. The tickets are expensive for the experience you receive, especially for large groups and families.Thank you for your valuable feedback. - SandraM5747 contributionsPhillip Island Penguin Parade - a must do!I am a resident of Melbourne but have not been to see the Penguin Parade for many years. This was an opportunity to go with family members. I loved it! I can see why, even to this day, it is a fantastic "must do" experience. What I found the best was the most friendliest and helpful staff! The whole evening was a joy and brought much happiness. The downfall of the evening was leaving the car park to find some people bag all their trash and dump it where their car was parked :( Take it back with you and dispose of the trash properly.Thank you for your valuable feedback. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit to the Penguin Parade and enjoyed interacting with our staff members. Feels like we had the best of everything. After watching them, and in some casing being nose-to-nose with some cuties, after 20 mins we also got to go above and view from the premium grandstand. I was really looking forward to seeing these tiny 9-12 inch penguins. The way it was explained was that each night hundreds of penguins raft in from the sea and they waddle their way onto the beach and then into their burrow nests. You are led to believe that you will see all of them rush into the shore and that this will be easy to see.
In reality, this is not what happens. The nature center has built a lovely new building which houses two gift shops and 2 eating facilities as well as elaborate bleachers on the beach to sit while viewing.
But this is what you really experience. They know what time the penguins are due in and they herd you to the bleachers. You are then told that photography and videoing are prohibited because the bright lights will scare the penguins. You are then instructed to download the Penguin Center app for pictures that can be "
shared with friends." It now gets dark and they put on yellow low visibility lights. The reality is that you can't see the penguins. In addition, the penguins don't raft in in the hundreds at once. Instead they arrive in groups of 6-8. We sat there in the dark as it stated to rain. By the way, bring a towel to sit on because the benches are wet before it even rains. We decided to trek back to the center, which is about 1/4 of a mile. But then we saw the penguins. The boardwalk is illuminated. From the railings you can see the cute little penguins waddling to their burrows. The walk either alone or in pairs. The bottom line is that you don't need to sit on the bleachers. All you need to do is find a spot o
n the pathway and then wait for the penguins.
If you know what to do you can make an informed decision if this attraction is for you. It is a major part of Philip Island's economy. If you want to see what these cute little penguins look like, download the app.

Yes the Penguins are cute. Yes it great to see them come out of the water together. Yes you appreciate how unique they are. BUT this is one of the more over hyped experiences I have seen. The breathless enthusiasm with which this event is promoted ignores telling you the following:
You have to see it with about 4000 (yes 4000) other people. The place is a madhouse. You have to sit quite a distance from the penguins; they don't show up until sundown; the lights are low. So you are sitting about 300 feet from the tiny penguins, in the dark squinting to see something - mostly you just see outlines.
You have to get there about 2 hours early to get a decent seat; you are on the ocean so its is cold - you need to bring jackets and blankets.
You can't take photos!
The penguins are clearly over promoted as a fund raiser for the Island's conversation efforts.
Hate to sound like a curmudgeon, but really?

The Little Penguins come ashore at sunset every night. There are always a lot of people waiting to see them so it probably worth paying for the Penguin Plus experience which allows you to be close to the point where they expect the majority to come ashore. There is no photography at the parade as flash can damage the Penguins eyes. All photos are taken in the visitors centre.

Four of us took in the Penguin Parade, and it was AMAZING. These little fellows are about 12-14 inches (30 - 35cm) high and as cute as can be! After dusk they grouped up in the surf, then came ashore in waves of 50 to the hundreds. After making it over the rocks they stopped and preened right in front of the viewing stand before they waddled off to their nests in the dunes. It was fun to watch them walk, then stop and get bumped around by their fellow travelers. (No photos are allowed, as it would scare the little guys.)

Planning ahead before visit would aid the trip to Phillip Island greatly.
Check the weather forecast first, then decide on a good day to trip down, book tickets for penguin parade early too.
I did not fancy being kept in a burrow for underground viewing without being able to smell the sea and touch the beach when I'm there so I skipped that option.
Both normal parade grounds and plus will give you ample viewing of penguins. The plus might give you a little more penguin marching your side but it all depends on the viewing spot you managed to plant yourself at and how many penguins were out for feed that day.
So, choosing a good viewing spot is the key to getting a closer look at the penguins. They trot up the rocks to their burrows. So sitting in the middle of the stands will give you a good view of the little ones coming ashore but not much of them trotting up inland. Taking a viewing spot on the sides closest to the rocks will give a good chance of admiring the tenacity of these lovely little creations.
Free seating system around the parade grounds so do be at the beach early if you want to secure a good spot.
Do be in ample warm clothings if you can't take the cold. I was there during summer but the cold gale from Bass Straits will be very chilly.
Would help to bring a small mat to sit on the sand, a parka, scarf or blankets, woolly hat and gloves.

Very average experience compared to years ago. The concrete jungle building is too focused on having you eat or snack there rather than put up informational displays so kids can learn something. The no cash policy is simply LUDICROUS! and spare me the covid excuse for not accepting cash.
There are a few displays, simply done, but not enough information. So much opportunity to teach children just not taken up. The full screen digital game is cute, and fun.
There is quite a distance from the concrete jungle to the penguin viewing area, so be prepared! Viewing area has not changed in years, except for if you pay extra, you get the better spot at the end where more penguins seem to come in. The 'security' may as well not have been there at all, people taking flash photos on the way back, zero reminders for covid distancing.....save the money on 'security' and spend it better elsewhere.
This is something to do if you have never done it before, but I will not be back as I feel it has been really downgraded and the focus is on making money through elitism, and food.....but only if you don't use cash.

We did the Penguin Parade on the penultimate night of our 3 weeks in Australia and we saved the best til (pretty much!) last. What a treat! We went for the Penguin Plus tickets and that meant we got to see the penguins waddle back up to their nest. Get there early to grab the best seats. As previous posts have mentioned, there are no photos allowed and this is strictly enforced. The rangers did a great job explaining what was going to happen and making sure people stayed sat down so that everyone can see. Can not recommend this highly enough, a total joy!!

The penguin parade is amazing! The night we were there 2,496 penguins were counted. At first we focused on them walking from the ocean to the beach. Then we realized there were hundreds behind the stands in their burrows, feeding their babies. It was difficulty to pull ourselves away from the park they were so amazing.
The entire visitors platform is very professionally done. Great walkways so you can see the penguins while not disturbing them. Get there early to see the exhibits at the visitors center.
But one HUGE PROBLEM! This town needs Uber’s or Lyft or public transportation to the penguin parade. We traveled to Cowes from Melbourne (easy to do via bus or ferry and train) but once in Cowes, no way to get to the penguins! At the visitors center they told us there was no way out there. Thank goodness our wonderful Airbnb host was so kind—she drove us both ways! Without that kindness we never would have seen the penguins that we traveled thousands of miles to see.
Not posting photos since can’t take any there, respecting the sensitivity to penguins’ eyes.

Booking is essential in busy holiday periods so don't be disappointed, otherwise you'll miss a treat. Huge car park so park near to the building to avoid a long walk, alternatively further away for a quick getaway after. Massive building with great facilities for shopping and eating etc. The walk from reception to beach is a bit of a trek, but manageable and is well supervised and slickly operated. Arrangements on the beach are ok with a choice of seating or sitting on the sand. Staff at the beach are helpful and informative, and the actual penguin arrival is heart rending and special. Take binoculars if you can as they are very useful. After the penguin parade there are opportunities on the walk back to the building to get close to the penguin chicks as they await the arrival of parents with full bellies.

We have previously visited and watched the penguins as general visitors, which was great. This time we thought we would try the Ultimate Adventure Tour and it was a huge disappointment.
Our tour guide was rude to multiple people in our group and actually yelled at one of us. She did not explain anything about the tour or how it worked. For example she was derogatory about us wearing bright colours, without explaining to us they needed to be covered so as not to distract the penguins. No where in our information was this communicated to us. We did not deliberately flout the rules but were treated like stupid and naughty children. This type of behaviour and attitude occurred over and over through the tour.
We learned nothing about penguins. There was no nature talk, no information about penguins and how they live. I learned a little as I asked questions, but the answers were only directed to me, not the whole group. But when one of our group, later asked the same question the guide actually grimaced and then responded in an irritated manner, as if she could not believe she had to answer the same question a second time. When it was time to leave we were told very abruptly, once again there was no advance explanations of how long we would stay out on the beach etc. Just an assumption that we should know all this in advance (without being told).
Our tour experience was ruined by someone who should not be in their job. She clearly hates doing her job and resents tourists. There was no enthusiasm for her job, no interest in educating or inspiring us about nature or the penguins.
The penguins were great but our overall experience was negatively impacted by the guide.
National Parks should be ashamed to employ people like this in a world famous facility. I hate to think how many international tourists have left with the same experience we had.
Do not waste your money on this tour, just go to the general viewing platform.

Hi. We are a family group of 6 across 3 generations coming at Easter. I am completely confused about the differences between the tickets. My eldest child has autism and so no tolerance of people blocking his view or making too much noise around him if he's trying to concentrate on something so I am concerned about the large loud crowds and how that could detract from the experience. So I would like an option that means smaller groups. He also has adhd meaning he struggles to sit still so also would like an option that allows us to move around between different viewing areas and definitely wouldn't want to be indoors only. Can someone please add a bit more colour to the ticket option descriptions to help me choose? Thank you.

Hi we drove there as we are from Sydney but if you go onto website I am sure there were packages that included bus from Melbourne City out to site and were inclusive of fares and ticket prices. We booked tickets on line so we didn't have to line up.

Message primarily for staff at Phillip Island
Hi we visited Phillip Island in 2006 during an independent 6 month tour of Australia with an old Ford Falcon station wagon and a tent. We respected your request not to photograph the penguins for fear of disturbing them. However, we have a personal
website which includes hundreds of photos of our time in Australia and I would dearly love a photo of the 'fairy' penguins
coming ashore or any close up photos you could allow us to use with the appropriate credit of course and or a link to your official website.
If this is possible please contact me. Sue Wright

Can we buy the tickets at phillip Island itself even if it's grayed out online as we planned a little late

It depends on which experience you want. When we went there was availability for the main viewing area but none for the exclusive experiences. We had booked prior to visiting.

Is there any way to see penguins if we don’t have ticket
Written 27 December 2018
Sort of yes! When we were there we went a walk at the Nobbies centre, this is a gorgeous long boardwalk with the most amazing views. Parking is free and afterwards you can go for a coffee in the centre (this bit is free, you only have to pay if you want to go into the antarctic museum). We always have our binoculars with us and along the walk you can see the penguin burrows/boxes in the hillside. They all look empty but actually the baby chics stay here all day, most of them hunker down but we saw quite a few in the burrows, you can see them with the naked eye but with the binoculars you get a great close up view.
