- MaxDa Nang, Vietnam133 contributionsBook early!By the time we decided to go, all the tickets were sold out, except for the public viewing ones, so make sure you book early! It's very pricey though, and in the end, we did manage to see the penguins swim ashore, but they were smaller than I had expected. The staff there kindly told us to move to another trail to get a better view. It's a shame that photos were not allowed after sunset, and being a law-abiding citizen, I didn't take any but I did see other people sneaking a photo here and there..... I was pleased to see the cute penguins but they were a LOT more smaller than I thought......we didn't have to wait too long either, as some of my friends had to when they went before us.Thanks for the review, many of our ticketing options do book out so booking early is a great tip. We agree watching the penguins arrive on the beach is great, but the boardwalks are where you get to see them close up. The Little Penguins are the smallest Penguins in the world and the only Penguins that live in Australia, often our visitors don't realise this until they see the penguins. Thank you for looking out for the penguins and keeping your camera away.Written 18 December 2022This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited November 2022Written 16 December 2022
- Moushumi PSingapore, Singapore240 contributionsAmazing experience but book in advanceThis was one of the highlights of our trip to Melbourne. However by the time we decided to go, the tickets for the seats with the best views were all sold out and we got the public viewing seats. Nevertheless, what an amazing experience it was for all of us, sitting in the dark (remember to bring warm clothes), waiting patiently and eagerly to see groups of little penguins emerge from the sea to make way for land. The silence, the absence of distraction of cameras and cell phones clicking away, makes this a magical, wondrous experience where you experience nature in its purest form! When you leave, you get to see the penguins up close from the walkway which was great! Also a shout out to the park staff who were very informative and helpful, with their explanations and information on where to sit to get better views.Thank you for the review, we are glad you enjoyed the experience and were able to make the most of the night. We have been very busy this year and many of our viewing options are booking out well in advance. Sounds like you were able to make the most of the viewing from the general admission area and the boardwalks.Written 27 December 2022This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2022Travelled with familyWritten 19 December 2022
- Leanne6 contributionsPenguin show.We booked the underground experience and... WOW.... It gets really cold at night, so underground was great as you were protected from the elements. The Penguins run right past the windows, so you get a really up close look at these cute little guys. This is definitely a must. The rangers and staff were lovely and a wealth of information.Thank you, we agree the Underground Viewing is a great experience and even better when it is cold or raining. Seeing the penguins come in from the sea to feed their babies and settle for the night... Great shop and exhibition inside. Definitely recommend taking a coat, wrapping up warm! It gets very cold with the ocean wind as it gets dark. My 5 year old and 16 year old loved this experience. Thanks for the review, glad your family enjoyed the Penguin Parade. - YY_XieSingapore, Singapore159 contributionsMagical experience getting upclose with the penguinsIt was magical to get so upclose with the penguins, watch them waddle, and be part of their nightly journey back home to their burrows. I purchased the Penguin Plus upgrade (outdoor viewing platform), so my tips below on the recommended sitting spot are be based on that. - Some background info: You'll be able to spot some lone penguins (who probably remained in their burrows in the day and didn't go out to sea) *before* sunset. This is the perfect opportunity to take photos of these creatures, given that photography is banned after sunset, as the penguins' eyes are very sensitive to light. The huge groups of penguins come in only *after* sunset, and the number increases as it gets darker. The whole process lasts about 50 min. - Advantages of sitting at the right side of the viewing platform: This is right next to the "highway" where penguins waddle inland, so you would get to be more upclose with the penguins. - Advantages of sitting at the left side of the viewing platform: This is next to a grassy mound, where a few lone penguins in their burrows may emerge before sunset, so this is a good spot for taking photos of lone penguins upclose. From here, you would also have a better view of the penguins coming ashore in the distance. My recommendation is to start by sitting at the left side, and take all the photos you can *before* sunset. Some 15 to 20 mins into the penguine parade *after* sunset, people will usually start to leave as they can't bear the cold. This would then be a good time to move to the right side to take up the spots that they vacated. This also happens to be the time when penguins approach in droves, so you get the best of both worlds. I don't think the Underground Viewing upgrade is worth it, as you see through only a tiny window.Hi, thanks for your review and for the tips on viewing.Written 3 January 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited December 2022Travelled soloWritten 29 December 2022
- Gary LPerth, Australia154 contributionsGreat experienceGreat for the kids & adults the staff were very helpful as my wife struggled due to disability with the long walk to the general viewing platform so they let her in roped off section & buggy transport for the return. My first visit was 10 years ago & the place has really developed over that time we saw plenty of penguins come in & even more on the walk back as they go the their nesting areas. It’s disappointing that many people ignore the photo request & still take pics but my tip is to go in between the 2 general viewing areas & you might see a Penguin or 2 before sunset like we did so you can take a pic next time I will try & get the penguin plus upgrade they were sold out when we purchased our tickets. Thanks for the review, glad we were able to make the night easier for your wife. We would love it if our visitors followed our simple instructions and didn't take photos after sunset. You give some great tips on getting a photo before it is dark.Written 3 January 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 31 December 2022
- Carl WKansas City, Missouri4 contributionsJoining a Private Tour too our experience to the next levelPhillip Island was always high up on our list. And of course, the Penguin Parade is the main highlight. We opted for a private tour, sourced from Tours By Locals and this really made our trip. Our guide James really made the experience exceptional. He upgraded us to the underground viewing area (well worth the money) and showed us all the hot spots of where to look out for the penguins. I must say, the bathroom facilities outdoors were not great but the inside facilities were excellent. The cafe food was below average but you don’t get much choice for eateries in the local area. Thanks for the review, glad you enjoyed your visit and were looked after by Tours By Locals. The good news is upgrade of our outdoor toilets is on our current priority list, hopefully it wont take too long for us to get funding. We will pass on your comments about the cafe.Written 3 January 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited December 2022Written 31 December 2022
- Von PPhoenix, Arizona87 contributionsHired a private tour - could not be happier!I used a local company for a private tour from Melbourne to Phillip Island and couldn't have been happier! We stopped at a wildlife preserve on the way, and then had dinner before going to see the little penguins. At dusk hundreds of the little guys came out of the island and flowed over the sand toward their burrows. We were not allowed to take any photographs as the actions of a few (in the past) have ruined it for the many by using flashes and frightening the little guys. But, the memory is vivid in my mind and will last forever. So glad I went! Thanks for the review, sounds like you had a great tour. Thanks you so much for respecting and protecting the penguins by following our no photography rules. - Jody GJenkintown, Pennsylvania117 contributionsLots of funThis is a protected area but they sell thousands of tickets each night. You have to be patient and wait for the penguins to come out of the ocean. On the night that we went, they arrived at 9:20. After they arrive, it's fun to walk along the boardwalks that lead back to the visitor center. You can see many penguins as they make their way to their burrows and you can hear all of the different sounds that they make. It was not cold on the night that we were there, a light jacket was fine. But there are many nights when the wind kicks up so we had brought coats just in case. It was a nice experience.Hi Jody, thanks for the review. We do have a dedicated research team that monitor the health and wellbeing of our penguins to ensure our nightly parade does not have a negative impact on them. They are doing well and although we have been very busy this summer our penguins continue to display normal behaviour as they return to their nests. Glad you enjoyed your night.Written 10 January 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited January 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 8 January 2023
- Mary M2 contributionsBitter sweetThe penguin parade was amazing and great to hear about all the good work being done to protect the environment and wildlife. Alas the experience in the restaurant was very poor, substandard food and highly inflated prices was shocking and staff appeared uninterested and unfriendly. Following the parade (windy and cold so bring a coat) nowhere to get a hot drink as they had already "turned off" the coffee machine!! We were early through this area with still hundreds of people behind us. Also it would be helpful if it was clearly stated before entry that cash is not accepted.Glad you enjoyed the penguins. We will pass your comments regarding the restaurant on to our catering team, we will also review our credit card only signage.Written 15 January 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 January 2023

Paid for the general viewing experience. No photos were allowed and they were strict about it. Sat in the cold shivering for 45min to wait for the penguins to appear. When they did, they was a lot of shuffling and movement and noises from the people which made the experience not so serene, especially when the rangers had to repeatedly go around telling and scolding some people to sit and put away their phones.
The highlight was to look at the penguins upclose on the boardwalk when returning when it was too cold for me. And it was just a penguin watching experience which could have been done at an aquarium. Would really have wanted the experience to be more natural/organic if not for the crowd. Respect the park's passion for the penguins though.

Super cute penguins!!
We went on the ultimate adventure tour and our guide was so informative about the penguins and the surrounding area. We also learnt about and saw other animals that inhabit the island.
The best part of the tour was of course the penguins! We got to sit right on the beach they waddle up and got to see them running back and forth between the land and sea. There were so many fairy penguins, each with their own little personality which was just adorable. We even got to see a few of them mating!
Overall, i would recommend the ultimate adventure tour for people who enjoy nature and want a more up-close experience. Each adventure tour group was relatively small (about 10 people) , which made the experience much better. Do note that it would be best to book online before going as when we got there all the tickets (including other categories) were sold out! Photography is also not allowed, but this rule is understandable to protect the wildlife.

We went on a bad day. There was rain in the vicinity and a very occasional lightening. Unfortunately there was no protocol for when to start. They rambled along till about 30 minutes after the penguins started to arrive. They need a bad weather protocol. ie: lightening within 5 miles, wait 15 min. No lightening in 15 min "go".
The announcements were absolutely miserable. In a hall with over 500 people talking, they MUST get attention first, THEN LOUDLY, SLOWLY & CLEARLY make the announcement. As it was very few people even heard an announcement. Please take note and do right for the people that paid a lot of money for a short viewing.

Visited Penguin parade and was highly disappointed. As a photographer, it was my desire to take photos of the penguins. We purchased our tickets online prior to the day, and no where did it say "photography not allowed". We did not find this out until we arrived for our session, after travelling interstate and driving down from Melbourne. We were told to put the camera away, even while taking photos of the full moon. There are 2 seating areas, and the penguins walk between the 2, so the area was lit. We saw maximum 30 penguins waddle up the beach, a good 30 metres away. Other penguins arrived further down the beach in the pitch black, we could just make out their white fronts. We saw a few baby penguins in the grass as we were leaving. I don't know if we had paid for a more expensive experience we would have seen more or been closer. The photos of people interacting with the penguins seems false. I wouldn't recommend this experience. Get all info prior if you want to go. Definitely below expectations.

I haven't been to see the Penguin Parade since the 70's visiting with mum and dad. Reviews back in those days, weren't particularly good however, I had some friends visiting from Canada recently and they wanted to see the Penguins. Of course I said I'd make it happen and glad I did. My sister and her husband escorted us to Phillip island and we made a day of it via San Remo, The Nobbies and Cowes. As expected, it was windy and freezing at the site of the parade, but well worth the wait when the penguins made their way from the surf to their burrows in the sand dunes. A lot has been done since the 70's to make it a much more comfortable viewing, including the Premium Plus seating ($75pp) which we did. Highly Recommended as you get to see the penguins coming up the beach as well as easy viewing from the platform to the main boardwalk. People do move about on the platform, but penguins are always in view. I don't recommend the underground viewing ($20pp more and much warmer but you can't really see the penguins emerging from the surf). General seating was packed as nearly $50pp less than the Premium. The issues we had, was listening to information & safety instructions given by the rangers - they need to upgrade their microphones as their voices were quite inaudible. Sadly, taking your own photos is prohibited, even without flash after too many accidental flashes by ignorant visitors in the past. It was great to see rangers on the ball when people attempted to use their mobile phone camera's or stand in the way of others. Definitely recommend pre-booking! Even off-peak, most areas were fully booked when we arrived. Excellent facilities - free parking, clean toilets, several cafes and gift shops closing approx 1hr after parade.

The Phillip Island trip is always about the miniature penguins. I would recommend upgrading for the closer seats. The penguins are adorable. We also went to a animal sanctuary and the 12 apostles. Gary, our driver, was friendly and quite memorable. The penguins march is a must see.

Absolutely fantastic experience, we chose the underground experience as we had some showers of rain during the day and it was very cold, it was great some really up close experiences and eye to eye.
After 20 minutes we went outside and that was the best, very close to the penguins and immersed in their loud calls, grooming and loving the waddling groups as they went past.
Loved the chicks coming to meet the adults, many burrows being a long way from the beach.
Professionally set up with good lighting for watching the chicks which didn’t seem to disturb them at all.
High recommend.

Thanks for your great review, we are delighted to hear you found the whole experience a fantastic and memorable one. The Underground Viewing area offers a wonderful perspective of the penguins as they waddle past, and we agree watching the penguins while on the boardwalks is a very special experience. Our lighting was created in consultation with our marine research scientist to be wildlife sensitive. We hope to see you again in future!

We came as a family group of 11 and bought the tickets online prior to the visit. For sure you need the VIP seats. There is not much to see from the regulat seats, the penguins are tiny and come ashore at quite a distance.
It was a bit crowded when we visited with people standing up and leaving, which sort of ruined the experience. May be try going there on a low season would be better. Also, it gets pretty chilly in the winter and come prepared.

Hi. We are a family group of 6 across 3 generations coming at Easter. I am completely confused about the differences between the tickets. My eldest child has autism and so no tolerance of people blocking his view or making too much noise around him if he's trying to concentrate on something so I am concerned about the large loud crowds and how that could detract from the experience. So I would like an option that means smaller groups. He also has adhd meaning he struggles to sit still so also would like an option that allows us to move around between different viewing areas and definitely wouldn't want to be indoors only. Can someone please add a bit more colour to the ticket option descriptions to help me choose? Thank you.

Hi we visited Phillip Island in 2006 during an independent 6 month tour of Australia with an old Ford Falcon station wagon and a tent. We respected your request not to photograph the penguins for fear of disturbing them. However, we have a personal
website which includes hundreds of photos of our time in Australia and I would dearly love a photo of the 'fairy' penguins
coming ashore or any close up photos you could allow us to use with the appropriate credit of course and or a link to your official website.
If this is possible please contact me. Sue Wright

Buongiorno Cesare.

Is there any way to see penguins if we don’t have ticket
Rita S
Stockport, UK240 contributions
Sort of yes! When we were there we went a walk at the Nobbies centre, this is a gorgeous long boardwalk with the most amazing views. Parking is free and afterwards you can go for a coffee in the centre (this bit is free, you only have to pay if you want to go into the antarctic museum). We always have our binoculars with us and along the walk you can see the penguin burrows/boxes in the hillside. They all look empty but actually the baby chics stay here all day, most of them hunker down but we saw quite a few in the burrows, you can see them with the naked eye but with the binoculars you get a great close up view.
