These ruins are relatively unknown and are very well preserved and set in beautiful surrounds. The site is a small pukara similar to the Quilmes ruins and was an important strategic point for protecting the mountain pass from Tafi del Valle before entering the Valle Calchaqui. The site's name comes from the "cardones" or thistles (Trichocereus pasacana) that make up the abundant vegetation that grows there. Some of these are as tall if not taller than those at the Los Cardones National Park in Salta.

This park is amazing. It had stunning vistas, cactus too numerous to count and occasional wildlife; we saw a pair of condors high in the sky. It’s nice to have a guide drive you so you can devote your full attention to the scenery.

This part of the province of Salta is quite desertic. The soil, mostly in hues of pink, suggests high iron and aluminum content. Strange gologic formations stud the scenery and different types of cacti, many reminiscent of sahuaro cactus, populate the plains. It is surprising...More

We departed the Sala de Payogasta Hotel at 9 AM on the nicely paved road driving eastward 32km to reach the signed entrance to this park. There were long vistas in all directions with wild flowers up close and mountains in the distance, so opportune...More

We drove from cachi to Salta in the road inside the park, wonderful landscape, not to much structure , some point of view and nothing else, but it worth!

What a treat to come across this absolutely gorgeous park, a landscape of massive cacti nestled within a stunning backdrop of rock formations. We came upon it late in the day with dramatic light and were transfixed.

A well worthwhile drive along Ruta 33 with amazing scenery of colourful rock strata on the mountainside, huge cactus and guanacos. Stopping on the roadside allowed us to view some curious guanaco up close. Ruta 33 from Cachi is a not to be missed road...More
