The Church of S. Maria Assunta is the Cathedral of Altamura and the Cathedral of the Diocese. It dates back to 1232 and was founded by Frederick II of Swabia with Romanesque characteristics. It is one of the four Palatine Churches of Puglia, therefore directly dependent on the King. Much of the Church was destroyed by the terrible earthquake of 1316 and was completely rebuilt by Robert of Anjou. In 1534 the orientation was even reversed and in 1557 the two mighty bell towers were added. The Gothic portal and the rose window are of extraordinary beauty, a masterpiece of Apulian sculpture from the 1300s. The interior is absolutely impressive, with three naves, with stucco, marble, paintings and various sculptures. Of particular interest is the monumental 29-pipe organ. The view from the external square that characterizes the entire historic center is impressive

…in Altamura!!…I visited this Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta…also known as the Cathedral of Altamura!!…this building was built at the behest of Frederick II…it is said that this Cathedral was built on a pre-existing pagan temple!! …the very beautiful and important façade with the two high bell towers!!…then you can see the beautiful rose window…with a fifteen-ray sunburst!!…the beautiful entrance door supported by two columns…resting on two lions!!… at a later time the clock tower was also built!!…the interior has three naves…separated by columns and pillars!!…and the women's galleries!!…the wooden vault…is decorated with gold stucco!! ...the main altar is wonderful!!...with the altarpiece depicting the Virgin of the Assumption!!...the stone ambo with scenes from the life of Jesus!!...and the beautiful wooden pulpit...also from the sixteenth century!!...many beautiful chapels sides!!…six on each side!!…even the statue of Saint Joseph!!…minor patron saint of the city holding Baby Jesus by the hand!!…and the marble confessional!!…which is truly rare!!…I would say a piece unique!!…but many other important works are kept here!!…all worth seeing if you visit this Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in Altamura!!…

Built with the support of the Emperor Frederick II over a 20-year period in the early 13th century, this church has undergone major reconstruction, renovations and remodelings in the 14th, 16th 18th and 20th centuries. The entire orientation of the church was changed 180 degrees in one of those interventions. The classical design, with three parallel naves (or a nave and two lateral aisles), features 12 side altars, six on each side. The symmetrical facade is anchored by two bell-towers and an elaborate stone carved entrance door, with multiple characters represented in the carvings. There is a beautiful rosette above the door, between the two towers. The magnificent wood ceiling combines paintings with gilted stucco work. Behind the altar is a painting by Leonardo Castellano (Assumption of the Virgin). The exquisite wood pulpit is thought to be from the 16th century. The presbytery includes a wood-carved choir, also from the 16th century.

We visited Altamura as we were staying in Matera but couldn’t find many places to see. We walked in a full circle around the cathedral but couldn’t find a door that opened.
The front door and surrounds are stunning and I imagine there would be similar inside. The two bell towers were impressive.

A chef taking a break in front of the cathedral’s information board suggested taking the upstairs tour that gives access to the “ladies galleries” above the nave with wonderful perspectives into the cathedral as well as over the piazza. The cathedral also boasts marble columns & facings that reflect its gothic beginnings. It’s particularly interesting to learn that the cathedral was “reversed” when the pope decreed that churches main entrances should face the most frequented space. The cathedral of Altamura was compelled to re-orient itself to conform, by building a new entry opposite the original one. There is also a particularly nice set of wooden choir stalls behind the alter that were added after the big switch.

Such a lovely church in the centre of a beautiful old town. Very light and airy. Exceeded expectations. We found parking easy and a wonderful gateway into the old town. Many lovely clothes shops as well. Unfortunately we did not have time for shopping even though all the sales were on. Just walking round the shady lanes was a delight.

A very characteristic building of the time in Altamura; very beautiful and central located at the heart of the town. It was very impressive to see from outside and very beautiful inside|!

This Cathedral, the only one built by Federico II, is unique because it has different elements from different ages that made this a national monument in the XIX century. I you visit the building make sure you go upstairs to check the "matronei" and the bell tower too. You have to pay a very simbolic entry ticket and have a native guide that will tell interesting stories about the place, among history and legend. Higly recommended

Went to the cathedral today. What a beautiful place filled with interesting info and artefacts. Make sure to check the expo upstairs. It costs you only 3,- but gives a lot of background info instead of just checking the cathedral downstairs. Beautiful surroundings. Only thing that kinda dissapointed me was the fact I couldn’t light an actual candle but the candles were electronic.
