History at it's finest.

There is something for everyone at Backus. There are many different events that take place over the year and it's great for a family day away.

The War of 1812 Re-Enactment is held in early September, this is a must see. Great for those attending to learn more about this historic battle. Period costumes are worn, there is a doctor dressed in the attire of the day and will show you the medical instruments used back in that era. They are primitive looking in my opinion... More

We stayed two nights in one of the two cabins in the campground area of Backus. Very clean place with friendly staff. Be aware that the cabin comes with no mattresses although it sleeps 6. Bring your own air mattress. Washroom was in a separate building, 5 minute walk away. Bring all your own utensils, plates, etc. Town of Port... More

We arrived well before noon on Sunday Aug 28th for day 2 of the Bluegrass Jamboree (advertised hours 10-2), only to find no music which was greatly disappointing. Garrett (?) at the mill was the only interpreter in period dress. He was excellent at explaining the workings of the mill, which was fascinating to see - the best part of... More

We spent a weekend tent camping at this park. It was a fairly clean and organized park, with some shady sites, though none that seemed very private. It would have been a more satisfactory experience had it not been for the couple next to us partying all night. Friends of theirs would drive in late at night and my husband,... More

I hadn't heard of this place before searching for things to do around Long Point, and am glad I stopped by! Being a history buff, I loved seeing period buildings and other artefacts. In addition to the mill are a two-story home, two smaller homes, an old red brick school, and several more farm buildings. The small on-site museum also... More

Built in the last years of the 18th Century, Backus Mill is unique to Western Ontario. It still has functioning machinery, all powered by a water-wheel, exactly as it was and worked for 150 years! The Mill Pond is stocked with trout for youngsters to catch. The park features an authentic 1850 style country estate house, barn, an old fashioned... More

This is the only place I know of that has a rich history of pirates on the great lakes, rum running during the days of prohibition, and tales of shipwrecks and stormy night shipwreck rescues, not to mention the battles during 1812 when American forces FAILED to find out Backus Mill. This is the ONLY mill NOT burned to the... More
