We'd somehow expected that someone would direct us to the main attraction of the town at some point. And we hadn't asked, so it was upon leaving Leigh Creek for Adelaide that we saw the sign to Aroona Dam and headed in. The track is a bit rough but OK for all cars, not sure about a van. It is a beautiful gem. Nature abounds, with goats, wallabies, kangaroos, swans and turtles toppong the frequent visitor list. There's a BBQ area but I'm not sure if it's working, as it a bit rundown. There's a table and chairs but plenty of room to set up your own. Signs indicate that you can put your kayak in, but no swimming near the dam wall. We spent about 40 minutes there but would have spent longer if we had known where it was, sooner.

Aroona Dam is about 6km off the highway, south of the township of Leigh Creek. It's a dirt road and can be rough in places but certainly not just 4WD. There isnt alot of water but still worth checking it out. There are picnic tables and toilets overlooking the dam.

1016/2018 on our way back from our trip up to north QLD we stayed at the Big4 just out of Ballina from there we drove around to see lots of places the one the we enjoyed the most Summerland house farm at Alstonville this took our hearts as it is farmed by the handy caped they also have a café and that is where we feel in in love with this place it is a must see the handy capped work in there they make and cook the food they also bring the food to your table. A MUST DO

We visited in the late afternoon of a very hot day (peak temp around 48C), and found animals (kangaroos, goats, lizards) and many types birds in the area. It is free to enter (gravel road). and there is a parking area and rest rooms (which we didn't look at). We were the only ones there.

David from Copley caravan park told us about this spot and we're glad he did! Really beautiful spot to have a look around! There's toilets and a few picnic tables etc in the parking area. Accessible by 2wd if you take it slow as well (we did it in a 2wd fine).

Really unlikely to find such a spectacularly large piece of water in such a dry place! Great for a picnic and photos.

Great drive in off the highway with three large areas to park. We parked at the bottom of the Dam and walked the short distance up the road to the other two parking areas. (One has toilet facilities.) The views of the Dam are beautiful and can be viewed in different places for completely different outlooks. We had wanted to do the walk but could not find where it began. It was only that we'd read about it else where that we looked for it.

Absolutely beautiful scenery on the drive in to the dam and at the dam itself. Lovely peaceful spot to stop and have a picnic lunch as we did. Very clean toilet block but must advise it is a very rocky unsealed road to the dam and probably not suitable for a sedan type vehicle but 2 wheel drive SUV should have no trouble.
