Stunningly beautiful and serene atmosphere at this magical lake. Gravel path takes you around the lake, with trees and flowers lining the way. With a curious teen and young child, it took us about 90 minutes to walk, with many diversions off the path to explore and climb near the lake shore. Rental boats and the gondola added to the charm, with a full restaurant and ice cream cafe as well. Hidden gem.

We went a couple of times to Gosausee during our stay in Gosau, with two families with (young) teenagers. We visited in August. We only stayed at the front lake.
Obviously the views are gorgeous with views of the lake, mountain and gletsjer in the background, and it is probably the main reason most tourists come to visit.
However, we really enjoyed the swimming here (water temperature 21/22 Celsius; really refreshing on a hot Summer day). On one occasion we rented an electric boat and a paddle boat with slide (reasonably priced); great for getting a bit further on the lake and jumping off in the water and swimming. The entire family really enjoyed this.
On another occasion the teens mainly jumped off the cliffs (on the left side of the lake) - they couldn’t get enough of it.
On the last occasion we did the simple hike around the lake, which was nice - followed by more jumping off the cliffs.
I definitely recommend going to Gosausee, not only for the quick views, but to spend a couple of hours or part of the day to swim and relax.
If you intend to come to Gosausee later in the day (peak hours), consider parking your car somewhere in the valley (Gosau, Gosauschmied or elsewhere) and take the bus up to the lake - it (only) goes once or twice per hour, but parking at Gosausee can be very busy and it may require you to hike up to the lake from the parking. The bus can be super convenient.

Even in February, when nature did not abound here with a large amount of snow, the walk around the lake was easy, admittedly icy in some places, but beautiful, with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. When I came to the lake, it was largely empty of water, which surprised me greatly. It meant either turning around or finding a footpath and walking away.
I didn't hesitate for a minute. Yes, it was a challenge... Yes means a great choice to move on 👌.

It seems wherever you go you will always find these amazing places that just dont get enough applause and recommendations on the internet...this place is a great example...its one of the most enchanting places that i visited in Austria. For me, its a MUST, and no, it doesnt matter how many lakes you visited, because this one is just different..i dont know if it was the weather or the time of the day, but i just loved it.

Going to this stunning place is so easy, you can do by bus from Bad Ischl which will take you right to the lake. From the bus stop walk a few steps you will see the heaven on earth. There is a restuarant there. We walked around the lake slowly because it's so beautiful that we have to stop and take pix. We have some pix to share in case you dont believe.
We went during a final week of October and found it fantastically colorful. We suggest to go in the morning, sunlight is more beautiful. You can combine Hallstatt, Five fingers and Gosausee since they are in the nearby area.

We loved this day out! Gorgeous, crystal clear lake. I have a fairly bad leg, and the path around the lake was very easy for me. Smooth, flat, with plenty of benches for breaks. The walk around the lake took us about an hour and a half, would be less for someone in normal condition. Many little waterfalls crashing down the sides of the hills as you go. Really lovely. And the lunch at the gasthaus was outstanding!

I’ve been visiting the Salzkammergut region for 5 or 6 years now, always parking myself in Bad Ischl, and using that town as a base. One of my end-of-holiday treats is a walk around Gosausee (Lake Gosau) followed by lunch in one of the local Alms.
I always use public transport, so it’s simply a case of jumping on the 542 at Bad Ischl Rail/Bus station, then an hour later I’m virtually lakeside (Check the bus timetables, since the service isn’t too frequent). There is ample parking for cars. The bus stop is right next to a cable car which’ll whisk you to the upper station in a few minutes. The views en-route to the bus terminus and in the cable car are lovely. The lower cable car station is just behind Gasthof Gosausee which offers food and accommodation. There are also a few souvenir/ice-cream shops dotted around.
I usually get straight into a circumnavigation of the lake, which takes me just over an hour, and as well as the scenery being superb, there are little distractions en-route such as a big copper funnel set up so you can hear the amplified, gentle trickle of water, and a pipe where you can sample the cool, mountain-filtered water. As well as virtually unlimited scenic photo opportunities (glaciers, clear water, jagged peaks etc.) there’s also the potential to watch rock climbers.
The lake that you’re walking around is called Vorderer Gosausee (Front Gosau Lake), but at roughly 50% of the way around, you can follow another trail to Hinterer Gosausee (Rear Gosau Lake) where I’ve heard there’s a great hut called Holzmeister Alm at the far end. Sadly, the bus timetable has never made it favourable for me to hike to the rear lake, since it’d probably take me another 45min+ to make the Alm from where the trail branches. So, having lapped the lake, I tend to return to the lower cable car station, take a ride to the top, where there are numerous opportunities to hike to other huts for lunch.
The area is riddled with trails of varied length, and huts aplenty, it’s also one of the calmest places I know, which is absolutely great for people who enjoy perfect scenery (come rain or shine) and who just want to enjoy the great outdoors.

This is so much more beautiful than Yosemite! Mountain lakes surrounded by sheer rock mountains, endless hiking and rock climbing. Even the food at the mountain hut near the glacier is fantastic!
The main lake has an easy pathway around it that can be walked in 45 minutes. There is a beginner via ferrata near the lake. Upper lake is an easy 1.5 hour hike with food available. We swam in the cold lake, so refreshing. There is also boat rentals, gondola up to one peak for hiking in the summer. Wonderful place for nature bathing! For an aggressive hike take the trail to Adamekhütte. 4.5 hours on a decent trail. Great food at the top and 3.5 hours down.

Its the second time in 2 years we have walked around the Gosausee. This time we also went to the 'little' one behind the first one.
The hike is around 9 km one way - takes about 3 hours, so bring water, fruit and snaks. At the end of the second lake there is a small place where you can by drinks and some small dishes.
Anyway its all very beautiful - and for free so its the perfect way to spend the day - also with kids.
You can swim in the lakes - its cold, but fresh.
The rute is easy - there is some smaller elevated places, but nothing that can't be done if you are in normal shape.
ENJOY

A place that you can't miss when you travelling around Hallstatt. It took me about 30mins bus from Hallstatt to Gosausee. I spent an afternoon at Gosausee and I had a wonderful time there with its amazing view :)
