- Dirk WAlexandra Headland, Australia10,147 contributionsImpressive solid complexSheki has little to offer as exciting attractions. So after you've visited the Khan's Palace and Fortress, you will probably take a walk and find this impressive building, which clearly has all the features of a Caravanserai : solid structure, single gate entrance, large courtyard, surrounded by cells. Throwback to the Silk Road, when Sheki was more important than it is today.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 28 October 2023

- Moskvichka12Moscow, Russia616 contributionsPeaceful piece of historySheki had 5 Karavanserai originally, but today two remain. This is the Upper Karavanserai. It is a beautiful and impressive building with a gorgeous courtyard of arches and greenery. It is a lovely place to sit in the shade and rest for a while. There is a tea house inside the courtyard, set up in ancient style - no windows, seats are stone covered with carpets, shisha, candles and traditional objects. They offer three tea packages with varying numbers of traditional desserts. Sheki has a huge number of sweet dishes, and this is quite a nice way to try a number all at once in an authentic-feeling venue. The cheapest tea package is a pot of tea with 5 desserts for 15 Manat (June 2024). There is a more modern tea house just inside the main door as well. Don't forget to look up as you walk in to see the bee-hive ceiling. The upper floor is a hotel today, and there is a posh restaurant out the back if you walk through the courtyard to the other side. From the outside, the original traders' stalls are now tourist shops. As well as the usual kitsch, there is a pottery making Sheki piti (clay jars), and a herb and loukoum man with unusual varities such as mulberry or saffron. Irresistable!Visited June 2024Travelled soloWritten 25 June 2024
- Milind ShahAhmedabad, India2,016 contributionsA testimony of the Silk routeSheki Karvansaray, was buitt during the reign of the Sheki Khanate and served as a crucial stopover for weary travellers and merchants journeying along the ancient Silk Road. The Sheki Karvansaray is part of a historical complex in Sheki that consists of two magnificent caravanserais, traditionally named "Yukhary" and "Ashaghy" caravanserais, which in Azerbaijani signify the "Upper" and "Lower" Caravanserai, respectively. The Silk Road was an ad-hoc series of different routes that extended across Central Asia and branched out into Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia. Sheki was an important stop on the Silk Road, and there were at least two massive inns built in the center of the city to accommodate traders. The "Lower" caravanserai has a rectangular shape with a large inner courtyard, in the center of which is a pool. There are 242 rooms. Since 1988, the lower caravanserai is used as a hotel complex for tourists, guests of the city, and local residents. The "Upper" caravanserai is located on more uneven terrain as the Gurian River runs nearby. Unlike the lower caravanserai, the upper caravanserai isn't used as a hotel. It attracts tourists as a historical and architectural monument and local sightseeing. This historic caravanserai stands as a testament to the region's vibrant cultural heritage and its pivotal role as a trading hub between East and West. It's a unique and memorable accommodation in Azerbaijan. While it is free to enter the caravanserai, the free entry is restricted to the lower area, you need stay at the hotel to access the upper caravanserai.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 7 July 2024

I thought it's one of the quality restaurants in Sheki, that's why we went there with family and guests. But, disappointed with poor service. Waitress are not professional at all. Food took almost 30 min. Even the ready cold appetaisers served almost 30 min. The worst thing happened there, is a bill and exchanges come without cover. Like everybody sees what you pay, what's exchange. Looks like people who work there have no idea about restaurant ethic.

Very nice place which is now a hotel. You can enter but only during the day due to its new destination. The alcoves are now rooms and the shops outside on the main street. A bit of a shame but still a pleasant place for the eyes to discover and do some shopping.

The caravansaray is a historical complex on the silk route between Europe and China. It was a roadside inn, which until a few years ago was again used as hotel. When in Sheki, it's quite easy to find, on the road leading to Sheki Khan's Palace. There is a garden restaurant right behind the caravansaray where you can have a drink or lunch.

Nice place to imagine yourself in an ancient "Silk Road" times. The entrance is free of charge and a good place to take pictures. This caravanserai is also used as a hotel, especially its second floor. But hotel quality is not good, due to historical place, there is restrictions for creating comfort.

One walk-through in the Carvanserai brings to life immediately the vastness and vitality of the Silk Road.

An interesting place when you know the history about it. Today a hotel on the second floor, but it is still something to see when you are in Sheki. A good photo stop!

If you want to hear the history of Sheki in depth, you must come here. We came in winter, if you come in spring and summer, I think you will see everywhere more alive and colorful
