According to the plaque on the base of the monument, Great King Mahasen ruled Anuradhapura between 276 to 305AD, although his death was also recorded elsewhere as occurring in 301AD. He was the first ruler to construct reservoirs in the country, building 16 in total plus two canals. He had the Minneriya river dammed in order to create the Minneriya reservoir, or Tank, as they are called in Sri Lanka. During his reign, the Jethavana stupa was built; the largest brick building ever built and the highest stupa on the island. The gold coloured statue sits atop a white plinth on the Habarana Roundabout, an informative plaque is recessed into one face of the plinth. Worth a look just for historical aspects.
