- Gibra LiMacau, China10 contributionsGood for tourists and localsMy husband’s favourite place in Macau. It gets quite busy on weekends, so I strongly suggest to come visit on weekdays. Rua do Cunha is always crowded though, so I wouldn’t suggest ordering street food there. On contrary, Taipa Houses area is really nice and peaceful. Also, a couple of nice Portuguese restaurants on Rua dos Negociantes.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 August 2024

Taipa is a must for all first-time Macau visitors. The small collection of alleys with colonial charm is the most popular attraction in the area. Nearly all tourist shops have an outlet here. This is also the best time to visit as the streets are not fully saturated at this moment.

Probably because I'm not a gambling fan and dislike the casino vibe but still had to visit Macau. Narrow alleys, a bustling crowd nibbling on the multiple street food options, plus a tiny remnant of the wetlands, a nice walking trail at the nearby park... and even a couple of casinos if you feel you miss them on this side of the bridge.

Location is very good just opposite of Galaxy. Many restaurants and shops there. Selection of local eateries such as snacks, irresistible cakes and pastries, and light bites. Famous Lord Stow’s egg tart is also here. Lighting shows in night time. If you want a break of GRAND things in big casinos, come strolling in Taipa Village to feel good old charm.

Yes, it is a nice place, but not one that will auger 5 stars.
We went during the Lunar New Year, so there are many decorations all around for phototaking.
Overall, a nice part, and walkable to Venetian Casino.
But other than that, it is a average place.

The lanes of Taipa are undergoing rapid touristification and more and more souvenir ships are moving in. But if you catch it on a quiet morning, you still get the feeling of old Macau. Take to the side streets and park.

Took a shuttle bus to the Venetian and walked over via the west wing, there was a long travelator that led to the Taipa Village. The village is tiny, but offers interesting sights and food. There were a few souvenir shops that sold cheap souvenirs to bring home as well as various food establishments. Tried the egg tarts for 10MOP, and Durian Ice Cream 30 MOP as well as a local style (some kind of Portuguese) pasta for 45MOP. Overall an alright trip, spent around 1.5hrs there.

This is a small tourist district within walking distance from the Venetian hotel. It's filled with local shops and eateries. It is very geared towards tourists so you will see lots of souvenirs and tourists. The area is not large, so I think it will take at most an hour of your time.
I've attached pictures and directions of where you will need to head towards to get to Taipa Village.

Taipa village is a lovely historical area to spend a few hours during trips to Macau. Here you can find a handful of traditional Portuguese restaurants, coffee shops, places to shop, a couple of decent museums, church and temple visits to make.
Top eateries in Taipa include Antonio, O'Santos, A Petisqueira, Dumbo, Tai Lei Loi Kei (pork buns) as well as Macanese snack shops like Koi Kei Bakery and Choi Heong Yuen. There are coffee shops in the area as well like Kafe Laku and Starbucks. Old Taipa Tavern is popular with some local and expats as well.
There is a nice temple, Pak Tai Temple and Our Lady of Carmel Church as well as the Taipa Houses Museum and the Museum of Taipa and Coloane History.
There is a nice, relatively new shop on Rua Do Cunha called Cunha Bazaar, which has three floors of locally made products. This is a nice place to spend a bit of time and perhaps money. There are other souvenir shops in the area as well, most make a stop at Koi Kei for Macau's most famous souvenirs - phoenix rolls, almond biscuits and jerky-style braised meats.
Tip: You can take bus 11,22,25,28A,33 from the city center bus depot, near the Grand Lisboa, which stops in Taipa village (MOP 6.20 per person), taxi fare is around MOP 40-45 from the Lisboa area.
Tip: From the Venetian Hotel, there is now an escalator bridge and long walkway near the West hotel entrance that goes almost the entire way to the Taipa Village, making the walk time around 10 minutes only.
Tip: From the City of Dreams, there is a shuttle bus that shuttles visitors to Taipa Village every 12-15 minutes, starting from 12.15pm in the afternoon.

Walking and mingling with locals and foreigners along its tiny yet well decorated and maintained streets is a must. It has a blend of old and modern designs where the juxtaposition between the past and the present melts. Lots of good restaurants and bars to enjoy Cantonese and international food. Cotai and its fancy hotels, high-end dinning restaurants and casinos is just at its back by 10 min. walking distance.

I will be going to Macau on Sunday from Hong Kong. I would like to visit Taipa Village, Senado Square, Fisherman’s Wharf and St. Paul Ruins in 1 day. Any suggestions on the itinerary and how to get there by bus or free shuttle? I’ll be coming from Venetian Macau. Thank you.

Go through the Venetian which is across the street from Sheraton and the Sands Cotai Central property. From the West Exit of Venetian, you simply cross over the main road by bridge and then follow a series of escalators that will take you along the artificial lake in front of the Taipa Houses Museum. At the end of the escalators, you are there in historic village of Taipa. Allow 20 minutes for this walk from Sheraton.

Hi all, I brought my pram (with my 3-year old boy) along to Taipa Village. Survived and it wasn't that bad. Cobblestones and slopes are a challenge, but we managed to see all of the village. Hope that serves as a gauge, if any.

I am planning either to stay at Galaxy Macau or Venetian Macau for 3 days. I hope to get some advice on the following.
a) I googled and there are some nice eateries/restaurants in Taipa Village (across Galaxy and Venetian).
While map shows it may be close to these two hotels, however, I like to find out in reality, is it within walking distance ?
If so, taking a slow walk, how long will it take to reach the Taipa Village ?
b) I'm also planning to visit St.Paul's ruin.
From the Galaxy or Venetian hotels, is it easy to take a bus there ? or must take a cab ?
c) Am I correct that Galaxy Macau and Venetian Macau are really close to each other that I can take a walk between these two hotels ? I'm asking because sometimes a map may look like near, but in reality it could be far apart.
Thanks !!

Galaxy and Venetian are both across the street from Taipa Village. As someone living in the village, I will say it is a quicker walk to the Galaxy. Both resorts are quite large, so while next to each other and both across the street - you will be able to get from the Galaxy to/from the village easier just due to where building entrances are.
It is very easy to exit the Galaxy resort and walk to the village - the exit is near the movie theater/food court with signs that help direct you to 'Old Taipa Village'. The walk is mostly flat, and where there are stairs there is also a ramp nearby. You do have to cross a busy street, but there is a marked crossing and many people so you won't be crossing alone. I can usually walk there in about 5-7 minutes, but I do walk quite fast. I would say walking slowly you will easily cross the street to enter the village in about 15 minutes maybe 20 if you're moving quite slow.
From the Venetian you can exit from the West Lobby and take two different routes. The easiest walk, that is also across flat ground, is to walk up the street towards the Galaxy and then cross directly into the village (at the same place you would walking from the Galaxy). I would estimate 30 minutes if you are walking slowly. There are nice sidewalks from Venetian to Galaxy and it is an easy flat walk.
The second route from Venetian would be to exit the West Lobby and then take the overpass walkway over the road. This will then route you down a quiet walkway towards the Taipa Houses along the water - the only thing is, to get into the village proper you then have to walk up (and then down) several stairs or up (and then down) a steep hill. I would say this route is a little longer if you are a slow walker, but if the stairs and hill are not an issue then I would also say it is a nicer walk.
Both the Galaxy and Venetian run free busses from casino to major Macau scenic areas. Just ask the front desk or concierge for information. They also run to/from airport and ferry terminals and are quite convenient. Make note of the start/end times for the day though - they do not run all night!
You can easily walk between the two properties - as I mentioned it is a nice flat walk on good sidewalks between the two. You would exit/enter Venetian via the West Lobby and exit/enter the Galaxy near the movie theater and food court. I am not sure, but they may even have a shuttle between them - I don't know all the shuttle bus routes run by the hotels, but several make it easy to get between them. Again, just check those shuttle options with the hotel.
The public bus system is quite easy to use and rather cheap. You can easily find bus info using Google maps, or there is also an app called Macau Easy Go that has bus info as well.
Taxis are an okay option - but sometimes hard to find, and some of the drivers can be quite difficult. ALWAYS make sure they turn the meter on. Know that there is a small surcharge to put luggage in the boot - per piece. Do not let them try to charge you any extra fees or flat rates. There are many good taxi drivers here in Macau - but also many dodgy ones. Don't be scared, just be aware and informed. Catching a taxi from the hotel will usually be quite easy, but sometimes the line can be very long. Catching a taxi from anywhere around town back to the hotel can be difficult and lines at taxi stand can be very long. I would say just be ready to have a plan B to use a bus so you don't feel stuck or frustrated.
Uber is not allowed in Macau. There is a local call taxi - I haven't used it, but I have heard it is only useful if you speak Chinese. I do not know specifics unfortunately.
I have stayed at both Venetian and Galaxy - Venetian has better shopping but I think Galaxy has better restaurants. Rooms at both are great. If you come in the summer wanting to go to the pool - Galaxy has best pools in Macau.
In Taipa Village I would recommend the following eateries:
Don Quixote Spanish Tapas for somewhere with many choices on menu
Old Taipa Tavern for drinks and pub food
El Gaucho Macau for a nice dinner of very delicious Argentinian BBQ
In Portuguese for tasty local food - small building with may stairs to a beautiful rooftop, but also seating available on ground floor.
Bella Taipa for delicious Italian food
And many, many others....the village is full of options - the above are just my favorites!
Hope you enjoy Macau!

Taipa Village is locaetd across the Galaxy casino complex. It is a 10 mn ride from the Taipa ferry terminal, about MOP 40 by taxi, or 20 mn from the Outer Harbour ferry terminal, about MOP 75

The walk to Taipa is done by foot. There is a walk escalator in one stretch and there is a elevator to cross the traffic circle. It's a raised walkway above the road.
