We bought trip to Gili Meno Escape, they nicely screw us up with transport back, so we had to pay extra money to get back to hotel and nobody cares. Beaches over there was dirty, full of rubbish, restaurants all around the place over there was just joke. Food quality awfull, service terrible, lets say we decide to stay just one night because we was starving. People around living in extremelly poor conditions, fighting for money on every single corner. Funniest thing was, how many times people offered us drugs to buy. While seating and trying to chill,no matter where we was, there was always street people selling crap and pushing it rude into your face, dont understand no as an answer. I didnt like this place at all, whole island is in very bad condition, very dirty and people over there are impossible. Awfull experience, i was happy when we left

I have mixed feelings about Gili Meno. The water is gorgeous and we saw so many turtles and lots of fish. To be honest the turtles were for me worth the trip but I don't think you need more than a couple of nights here . We literally could not fathom why nobody is doing anything about the never ending litter, it was so sad and I guess that there needs to be an initiative from the top like banning plastic on the island as well as employing local people to do daily beach clean ups. I was shocked at how dead the coral was , especially having been to Thailand recently where it was vibrant and full of colour. If people want to continue to make a living from tourism they've got to spearhead initiatives to clean these islands up. There is a weekly clean up on Sundays but this is no near enough.

Small island with paradisiac beaches.
All business are small and run by local families. Great place to run away from crowded places. Excelent for couples.
You can also get deep on the local life style.

Dear Sir,
I just came back from Gili Island Indonesia on 29th April 2018. I am disturbed and deeply saddened by how the horses in Gili Island are treated. They are used for transportation but not in the correct way and treated in the cruelest way. Below are my report of what I have investigated and observe from talking to the horses owners. I am doctor and an equestrian therefore I know when the condition of horses should be alarming.
1. The rules for horse carriage load in Gili island should be of "maximum of 4 people including the driver". However In Gili Island you can see most horses carrying 6-7 heavy tourist in small carriage along with their suitcases. Many times I can see the horses struggled to pull the carriage and some of them had to stop and slow down and look so exhausted due to the overload but the owner force them to continue. This will lead to animal sufferings from debilitating leg problems and fatal consequences. This is clearly BARBARIC. Horses are overworked to death for money purposes by their owners.
2. Most of the horses there are clearly "only small pony". But "the pony" are made to carry heavy carriage!
3. From investigating the owners, they said all the owners in the island owns 3 horses, therefore the horses take shift and not overworked. This is clearly not the case and still unacceptable because from what I observe, the horses look malnourished, exhausted, dehydrated. They were left in the hot sun while waiting for tourist, they were extremely dehydrated and tired. They have frosty saliva in the mouth which clearly is a sign of dehydration and it is alarming. We had to find water for the horses. The worst is they never take off the strip of the carriage from the horses while the horses are at rest from their work.
4. Yes I know theres a VET service that comes twice a year. But if it is so why are most of the horses are such in a bad condition.
5. My friends has contacted authorities in Gili Island, but they did not do much and said this is just a common issue and the animal protection can't interfere BECAUSE the horses have owners and its consider their own pet. Therefore organisation can't interfere. This is extremely nuisance. Animal abuse is still animal abuse regardless of they have owners or not.
6. Horse owners should NOT allow 6-7 heavy tourist/locals in one carriage along with their suitcases. Ive spoken to some of the volunteer there, their reasons was that it is because the tourist was the one who demand it from the owner. I think this is also ridiculous excuse. Horse owner should take ownership, the money is to support themselves but should be done in a proper way not forcing the horse to overworked in a cruel way. Tourist should also not ride these poor horses. It is disturbing and sickening to see them do so.
7. Gili Island should have their own soared powered Tuk Tuk to end this abuse, like small island in Thailand such as Krabi which used Tuk Tuk.
I will be telling all my family members and friends not to visit the islands until the conditions for horses have been improved.
Please do something about it. I shall write to the government and higher authorities and media as well. Please tell me who I can CONTACT, as email reply will be slow to alert attention since there is thousand of emails that comes daily.

If you care for the environment at all, do NOT visit any Gili Islands. There is no potabel water, the horses are worked to death without food and water, ocean is dead. The beaches are NOT for walking. It is all dead corals. Infrequently one can see a turtle and a few fish in the water. Disgustingly dirty NON BLUE water, noisy, smoking, filthy tourists, the absolute worst kind everywhere. As one side of the island is being built up more, the other side is collapsing. These people (all foreign investors) live not in an island but in a shallow corner of an island. They do not open their eyes to see what is happening on the other side of their own island. A horrible nightmarish place for any educated and environmentally conscious individudal.

The beaches on Gili Meno have the potential to be absolutely amazing however the extensive litter makes them look very shabby. It is ok to see coral and driftwood but the amount of plastic flip flops, wrappers etc is poor and not good for marine life if also washed back into the sea. Staff could be paid to clear the beaches daily making the place stunning for visitors

I am writing this to say please visit Gili Meno. Yes, there is evidence of buildings destroyed in the earthquake but most hotels have been rebuilt and are amazing. The island is as described in the other reviews and the people are just lovely. So friendly. But without tourists they remain incredibly poor. There are many restaurants around the coast but a lot have no customers and the people who run them no money. The owners might be ok, I don’t know but it appears some owners are from other countries and some haven’t even helped with the rebuilding after the earthquake. The Indonesian Government has promised financial help for people to rebuild their houses and none has been given so far. On the mainland you can still see people in tents and the rainy season is on the way. I understand why tourists would be reluctant to come to an area hit by an earthquake, I felt a little fearful too. But without us people will really suffer. I met this lovely guy running a bar here and we were his only customers yesterday and it was the same two days earlier.
As with everywhere there are street sellers and they are really struggling. Already they are probably among the poorest people but with no tourists they literally have no money for food. One that I spoke to had to pay his licence to sell on the island, his ferry ticket to get there everyday and would find just a handful of visitors to sell to.
This island is beautiful, quiet and the perfect antidote to Bali and Lombok if you want a bit more relaxation while in Indonesia. Please visit and you can help the recovery from the earthquake by spending your money supporting the local businesses.

Well Gili Meno has probably the best beach of the three famous Gili's but I think it's totally overrated (The Gili's in general).
There is so much rubbish and dead coral and at low tide there are only two places where it's good to swim on the whole island. I've seen so many nicer beaches and expected much more form what you always hear about the Gili's. I won't go back there. Malaysia has no much better beaches....
The worst thing is that it seems that almost nobody of the locals cares about the environment which will be sonner or later their smashup (rubbish, dynamite fishing, shredding the corals with their outbord motors)

My husband and I stayed on the island for 5 days and we really enjoyed our time there. The island is very relaxed and the locals are very friendly. I'm so glad that we chose to stay on Gili Meno, rather than Gili T or Air, as they just seemed so crowded and full of full-moon party types on those islands. We stayed in Villa Nautilus and we really enjoyed staying in our bungalow there.
The beaches are blonde and sandy, with some rockiness on the sandy beaches, but the trade-off for the rockiness on the beaches is the decent snorkeling around the island. The beaches near the boat harbor are the sandiest and the rocky beaches start in the north part of the island up near Turtle Heaven. My advice for anyone getting in the water there, is to wear Teva shoes or some other sort of water shoes. Getting in the water can be quite painful with all the rocks/coral there, and when the waves start thrashing around mid-day, you can get taken out by a wave and get dumped into the rocks or coral. It's possible to get an ankle injury or really scraped up by getting in and out of the water.
Head to the beaches south of the boat harbor (almost as far as the southern tip where the beach rounds the corner and the waves get big) for sun-tanning and swimming. It's less crowded than right around the harbor and it is possible to have the beach all to yourself in the morning hours. By mid-day, there were only a max of 15 people on that part of the beach, so still relatively secluded for a beach. Grab yourself a fresh coconut on the walk down there and enjoy drinking it on a nice beach.
Diving is great here. We dived with Blue Marlin and they were really good. On dive sites you will see turtles on almost every dive, eagle rays, reef sharks, etc. There is also a wreck dive called the Bounty Wreck which was very cool.
There is a turtle sanctuary on the island and some good restaurants. Go to Villa Nautilus for great wood-fire oven pizzas.
Overall, I'd say this is the place to go if you have made it to Bali and were disappointed with the beaches there. In my opinion, beaches in Bali were not good (Bali is more about the cultural stuff), so I was happy when we made it to the Gili islands. We made the trek from Amed in Bali and it took about 2 hours. Make sure you get in line early for a seat so you can sit inside the boat, otherwise you will get dumped by waves for 2 hours [speaking from personal experience - worst.boat trip.EVER]. Transfers from Gili T to Gili M are sketchy and the boat companies will try to make excuses why they won't take you to Gili M, but there are other smaller boats there that can make the journey. Negotiate hard with them and don't put up with their crap when they try to dump you off on the wrong side of the island with all your gear.

Gili meno is one of the three north gili islands (the middle and smallest one) but crystal bay is a beach in another island called nusa penida (a much bigger island compared to gili islands). Nusa penida island is about half hour away from bali by fast boat while gili islands are about 2 hours away by fast boat from bali. It all depends on how many days you have to spare and what is your interest. Personally I would go for gili islands, gili islands however are more suitable for snorkeling as almost all the beach around gili meno and the others are surrounded by corals. While crystal bay in nusa penida is much more suitable for swimming. Hope that helps.

Hi, I'm considering the 3 Gili Islands as a family trip, Air, Meno and T, 5 nights on each, 2 questions if anyone can help, is it easy to arrange transport between islands once there and is there a sensible order to do the islands in? I'll be travelling with my wife and 10 year old son.
Many thanks.

Inter island travel is fairly easy. Ferry offices on all islands. The quietest is Gili Meno but they are all fairly close to each other so island hopping is easy and reasonably priced.

Hi, how much does it cost to get from Gili to Lombok? To the nearest “port”?
Written 6 April 2019
Hi, sorry for the late response. We got a taxi from our hotel in Lombok and he arranged for a speed boat to take us. It was for 4 adults and we paid ÂŁ40 there and back, that incldued the taxi journeys. The speed boat ride was pretty hairy as there was a big swell-the boat from Bali had been stopped due th the big wave! We loved Gili Meno, we left it just 5 hours before the 2nd earthquake last August!

I did receive an email from Villa Mahamaya to say that their resort had been damaged and they would be open to the public until repairs had been carried out. It might be best the check in with the resort where your were going to stay

We are staying at Sudamala Suites, Lombok and wanted to go to Gilli Meno only, the hotel/tour company say that they only do trips to all 3 Gilli's. Has anyone done just the one island for a chilled day out? If so how did you get there etc?

We stayed at Seri Resort on the south end, which was great (minus the need for shoes on the rocky sand beach). Top notch but there were several great spots we walked past along the island.
