Ecotourism? I don't think so! Don't get me wrong, Sumidero Canyon is really impressive and it was all ooooh's and aaaah's until the boat crept up to a perched crocodile on a rock. "Is that trash?" echoed voices from around the boat. Sure enough, it was. And I'm not talking about one or two bottles, the unfortunate crocodile was resting... More

We didn't have high expectations of the visit to Sumidero canyon. We thought it was going to be very touristy. But actually we were pleasantly surprised. You get a long (2-hour) boat ride through the canyon, all the way to the hydroelectric dam which drowned the canyon back in the 1980s. The narrowness of the canyon, its very high, almost... More

If you happen to be in Chiapas State and Tuxtla Gutierrez Mexico for business or pleasure you must take the time for a 2-3 hour boat ride through Sumidero Canyon. With 2,316 foot high canyon walls and the jungle coming down to the waters edge it becomes a photographers paradise. There were monkeys in the trees, alligators (crocodiles)in the water and... More

the entrance to the canyon is nothing much and there are a lot of shops around the area where you can get a boat(if you can call it that) to go for an hair raising hours ride into the canyon to see the wildlife and the rock formations. not much concern for safety, only life jackets, the boat can breakdown... We saw the Cañon del Sumidero from a boat along the Río Grijalva via Chiapa de Corzo as well as from the various viewpoints above on the canyon's edge, a short drive from Oaxaca's capital, Tuxtla Gutiérrez. Both trips were worthwhile as the perspectives are quite different and the canyon is beautiful. Travel along the river is by high-speed passenger... More

Buy a day trip from a tour operator in San Cristobal and you will be happy. The price is cheap and includes travel in a minivan, a boat trip up the Canyon and a visit to historic Chiapas de Corso, a beautiful Mexican town in the Valley. The Canyon is fantastic. It is teeming with birdlife, the views are spectacular... More

Sumidero Canyon is hugely spectacular and also a great area for birding. Note that the park is closed on Tuesdays. I was happy to see my first Lesser Roadrunner here, as well as Belted Flycatcher, Red-breasted Chat, many warblers and my first OCELOT ! I stayed at the Best Western which was nice.

we heared and expected very much from the trip to the canyon, and in fact it was nice and pleasant, not stunning, except of one big issue, at least for us, which is a huge concentration of waste blocking the river, and real disgusting, although locals blame guatemala, for poluting the river, which i doubt, to my humble belief, this... An hour boat ride upriver and back to see a fantastic waterfall/limestone deposit known as the Christmas Tree. Some crocs and birds along the way and some interesting rock formations and caves.

Boats were well organised. Trip of about two hours. Scenery is inspiring but I just loved the wildlife. There are lots of herons and egrets and black vultures at very close range. We came on a small crocodile first, with butterflies on his head like ears. Later we came on a big one sunning on a rock and were able... More
