We took one of the little motor taxis from Baveno, where we were staying, to Isola Bella. And "Bella" it certainly is .... It was quite crowded, given that we went on a weekday in August, but not unmanageable. The first rooms are not particularly well done - you are bundled through a series of small rooms, intensely hung with... More

Three three islands off Stressa in Lake Maggiori are all tourist traps. Jam packed with shops selling junk made on China. When we went it was hot and humid. Couldn't wait for the boat back to the shore.

50 minutes by boat from Verbania. On the Isola Bella is a summer palace of Savoy family. Magnificent place with the beautiful scenery for taking photographs. The weather on the day of my visit was not so good, but I assure you that this place is worth visiting.

The prevailing theme here is 19th century bling, courtesy of the earlier descendants of the Borromeo family. The house is one big romantic conceit; the gardens are pure Chelsea Flower show. It's worth a boat trip from Stresa. Guidebooks describe it as packed in summer, but it was all perfectly manageable when we went on a Friday in high season.

This is a wonderful place to visit it does have a few shops and stalls that sell goods, but we also went around the house and visited the breath taking gardens, they really are a wonderful sight to see

Quick ferry ride from Stresa with very beautiful grounds and palace to explore. Enjoy the surrounding beauty of Lago Maggiore.

You can walk round the village for free but it's well worth the entrance fee to see the house and grounds. They are so ornate with white peacocks roaming round the garden We had coffee and cake whilst there and it was quire reasonably priced. Which was a pleasant surprise. There are quite a few stairs both indoors and out... More

We took a boat from Stresa (15 Euro return - normally it's 20) to the island - a few minutes. The palace and gardens are a combined ticket - worth it. The palace is fascinating - to see how the elite family lived and the gardens are amazing. We went with our two girls - 11 and 14 and they... More

Beautiful island to have a wander around or even swim in the lake there! Didn't visit the gardens but they looked lovely when we peeked in!

It's so easy and fun to get to this island. Avoid the tourist clutter and head to the palazzo and gardens first before the crowds. The architecture, paintings, and furnishings are gorgeous and the gardens are stunning and photogenic. The cafè in the far right corner out back is nice and you can sit and people-watch. Plan on a half-day... More
