The self-guided game drive is inexpensive and well worth doing. On a cloudy day we saw zebra, various bok and beest, and with the help of binoculars,a couple of rhino and a family of giraffe. However it's probably best to at least have a high wheelbase vehicle - not sure the track would suit a standard saloon

A wonderful birthday party , fantastic sunset and moonrise over the Dam. Excellent animal sightings! The water is low but great fun was had by all.

A must visit if you're in the area. Entrance to the park is R50 per person, and well worth considering that you see so many animals in such a short period. We spent two hours there and had seen a white rhino, a group of giraffes and zebra's..and various types of buck. When driving around, best to use a 4x4... More

Beautifully located serene nature reserve. We had no problems driving the gravel roads with our 4x2 VW Vivo, but low cars might face difficulties. Entrance is cheap 50R for roughly a 2 hour drive. Saw Eland, Zebra, Impala, Kudu, Blesbok and even the highlight of 3 White rhinos. The entrance is to the Southeast of the park.

If you're in the Central Drakenberg region and a nature lover, include a trip to the Spioenkop Nature Reserve where you can enjoy a tranquil self guided game drive. The vegetation and dam gives you an instant feeling of being in the wild and the game were plentiful and easy to spot. On our trip we saw hordes of antelope,... More

When we visited the roads were dry and we had no problems in a non 4x4 vehicle. There was plenty of wildlife to see - impala, wildebeest, kudu, giraffe, mongoose and plenty of zebra. There are no facilities for day visitors, which is a shame. No toilets or refreshments.

Went in a 2x2, roads a but bumpy but manageable if you are careful and drive slow. Spent several hours here and saw mongoose, loads of birds, giraffes with babies, elands with baby, zebra with young, kudu, impala, hartebeest, wildebeest and more! Seemed to only see 3 other cars on the entire trip too! We didn't visit the reception or... More

Read conflicting reviews about the Spioenkop Nature Reserve (mainly the road conditions) and decided to give it a try. Please DO NOT GO into this reserve if you don't have a 4x4 \ SUV of some sort. I have been to many nature reserves in South Africa with a normal car like I did at this reserve and the roads... More

Visiting the Spioenkop game reserve was not the main reason for my visit to the area, but I enjoyed my two game drives on the reserve. One was guide (Spionkop Lodge) and one I did by myself (with my own Toyota Fortuner 2x4). It was no problem to drive the park in my SUV, but I would not recommend to... More

excellent drive by Alistair Heron. He was knowledgeable about the reserve and the animals. Helpful as well at the lodge. Limited animal availability on this trip of the animals. It is always a catch 22 when looking for the special wild animals. But we did enjoy the trip. Good experience.
