About
Mount Pinatubo is an active stratovolcano in the Cabusilan Mountains on the island of Luzon, near the tri-point of the Philippine provinces of Zambales, Tarlac, and Pampanga. Before the volcanic activities of 1991, its eruptive history was unknown to most people. It was heavily eroded, inconspicuous and obscured from view. It was covered with dense forest which supported a population of several thousand indigenous people, the Aetas, who fled to the mountains during the Spanish conquest of the Philippines.

The hike was definitely awesome. All the sweat and body aches were worth it upon seeing the amazing view of the beautiful disaster, Mt. Pinatubo. One from my bucket list and must try. Happy group we all enjoyed it.

We booked a private tour through Filipino Travel and Tours.
Pick up at our hotel in Clark at 4:45am, swap vehicles to a 4x4 at 6 am. Start hiking at 7:15 am and reach the crater lake at 8:30am.
Very good local guide. Local vendors sell snacks and drinks at the lake. Overall a well organized trip.

I've been to Mt. Pinatubo back in 2013 and during THAT TIME, the 4x4 jeeps could take you right up the foot of the Volcano followed by a 15 min trek up the peak.
After the pandemic, being closed for more than a year, the trails for the 4x4 have become unpassable and thus you need to walk 6.5kms to the base of the volcano. This will take you a little over 1.5 hours to do (depending on your pace). Trail is full of sand, rocks, and occassional stream crossing (your shoes will get wet but the guide can place rocks to step on). The trail would be easy but getting a secure footing in some parts was tricky. There is also no coverage from the sun. Best to start at 5am.

Views were breath taking especially on the crater.

Some Tips:
1. Do not go during the rainy season. You're welcome.
2. 4x4 ride can last 30 to 45 mins one way. This gets very dusty in the afternoon. Bring a mask.
3. Wear shoes that has good grip and ok to get wet.
4. No water/food along the way, you need to carry this. You can buy at the peak but expect prices to be high (Php100 for 500ml of Gatorade as of June 2022).
5. For the ladies, there are bathrooms in 2 areas, at the base of the volcano and at the peak. Nowhere else during the 6.5km walk. For men, bathroom is everywhere.
6. Bring a hat or cover up. There is no shade during the trek. You can avoid the heat by starting early but coming back there is no escape from the sun.
7. Take pics, walk at your own pace. Enjoy!

Hiking Mt Pinatubo was long ago on my bucket list - so glad it finally happened. After a thrilling Jeep ride to the starting point of the trail, a guide led us on our 1.5-2 hrs each way. The trail wasn't difficult nor ardous to hike. The views on top and lakeside of the crater, as well as the hike itself, are more than rewarding for everything.
Not-so-fun fact the other morning: Our friendly host and owner of Casa Hermogina informed us, that last night the Taal Volcano erupted - the very day 1 year after we hiked there.

Took approximately one hour from Clark to registration area in Pinatubo. Then take 4x4 almost one more hour to reach mount Pinatubo. Hiking only 20minute to the crater. Breathtaking view up there. For those newcomers, please prepare balaclava or mask, because of dust.

The view is just as wonderful as other travellers have said but I am so disappointed with all the rubbish left by visitors and locals. Along the 5km hike my group picked up and filled 4 plastic bags full of rubbish. At the parking area for the 4x4 jeeps, it was a lot more rubbish of cigarette packets, engine oil bottles, sweet packets, cigarette buds etc. I urge all visitors and locals to pick up the rubbish when they visit. We have to do our part for the environment and preserve these natural spaces.

I did my trip solo, no help, and it was... challenging. In the end, I arrived at the road block and was told that you could only go there in the morning! (There’s an army base and it was a thing in April), so I ended up spending an evening and night at Alvin’s guesthouse. I booked a Jeep through him too, joining another group. At 6, jeeps took us to the base of the mountain. The ride was fantastic, super fun, but also dusty and I hope you don’t have motion sickness!
Pinatubo itself - easy, quick hike, but absolutely marvelous view! You can go down into the crater and actually touch the crater lake (no swimming tho!)
On the way back we had to wait because army exercises took place right there. Scary, but fun to watch.
OVERALL: absolutely worth it. Just look at the pictures!

We first rode 4 x 4 car going to the entry point of our trek. Then seems an endless rocky road, but when you reach the top,It's all worth it.
