Mount Pinatubo is an active stratovolcano in the Cabusilan Mountains on the island of Luzon, near the tri-point of the Philippine provinces of Zambales, Tarlac, and Pampanga. Before the volcanic activities of 1991, its eruptive history was unknown to most people. It was heavily eroded, inconspicuous and obscured from view. It was covered with dense forest which supported a population of several thousand indigenous people, the Aetas, who fled to the mountains during the Spanish conquest of the Philippines.

An early start leaving Manila at 3am to be at the start point by 6am. I was glad our jeepney was open in the back so we had plenty of ventilation and excellent photo opportunities as we bounced along the rugged terrain. It was fascinating to see the farmlands turn into volcanic formations. The hike to the top has many... More

It amazes me how a volcanic eruption could form a beautiful crater lake. This is a pure work of nature. No swimming btw. The hiking was not that difficult so it is good for beginners like me. It was my first time to hike. But one of my favourite parts was the 4x4 ride where we had to experience a... More

Our family went on a tour of Mount Pinatubo. The tour was arranged from our hotel in Angeles and included pick up at the hotel at 5:00 am. One hour drive to guesthouse to be picked up by 4x4 jeeps - one open the other enclosed. About 1 hour jeep ride to start of hike. Hike took about 1 hour.... More

I don't want to spoil your experience by revealing too much but the Crater lake of Mt Pinatubo is stunning and well worth a visit, stay at Alvins Pinatubo guest house the night before and book either the 4x4 tour or ATV tour through Capas ATV which crosses the barren volcanic dessert for around 2 hours followed by a 3km... We traveled by bus from Manila to Capas in Tarlac and then to the tourism office to book the tour guide and the 4x4 It was 2nd January 2017, and for our surprise, 2nd January of each year, is the Sacrifice offering day for the Volcano Mountain. We got really curious and asked why there was a lady with us,... More

If you have a sensitive or delicate back then the 75 minute journey from the road to the parking area for Punitubo can be a challenge. It's tough going. But if you can endure it the hike is pretty easy and worth it when you reach the crater. Once there there's not much to do other than appreciate the view.... More

Dec-Feb are probably the best months to visit because of the weather. I was lucky that it was not too hot when i did the trek. The 4x4 ride was the highlight of this trip and i was just amazed with the mesmerizing scenery, and i thought how wonderful nature could be. i mean, something beautiful is created from a... More

Many of the literature I saw and those of what I heard on the trip – I never asked because I don’t need to by then – is that reservation was needed for the 4x4. The walk-in I met during the day coordinated with Capas Tourism Office and reserved. My trip to Pinatubo on the other hand was under the... More

I love the experience of doing that 2 hour ride by 4x4. The scenery was astounding! However, the trek was so-so. Plus, it didn't help that I didn't know they stopped bringing up the 4x4 ride till the 30 min "start of trek". Alternatively, you really have to do the whole trek thing, which is around 3 hours going up... More

I can still remember clearly how my brother and I played under the raining ash in our yard imagining as if it was snow 25 yrs ago. It was after Mt. Pinatubo's 1991 eruption which effects were felt worldwide. This historical event made our group realize that we must add this to our many travel bucket list. It was fun... More
