Just visited the show while on a business trip to Zhengzhou. If you are in the vicinity of Zhengzhou or visiting the Shaolin Temple area, take time to watch this evening show.
I had little idea of what I was going to see as it was arranged by our client, but I am really glad that I got to experience it. It was breathtaking.
Brilliant dance and displays mixed with Buddhism and Kung Fu. Fantastic lighting, sounds, and music using an incredible background of the mountains. Even had lights on top of the mountains. There id a huge cast of talented performers of all ages.
Superb.

First, It is a so amazing show, so huge one. In the real gorge and stream, we sit inside the valley.

Second, there is only 4 Chinese sentences which mean if we choose to be happy, every day could be the perfect time.

Third, as a tour guide talk with so many international tourists, they said this is a must during the trip like you must see the great wall in Beijing.

Thank you. If you need more details, please feel free to email me .

I really enjoyed this show. I have been told (but did not verify) that this was put on by the famous director Zhang Yimou (or perhaps something he invested in). And that the same company also does the show at Mount Tai. I've been to both. I enjoyed this one a lot more. My older kids ages 8 and 6 also enjoyed it. My 1 year old wasn't really sure what is going on.

It is very artistic and relaxing. If you are expecting a traditional Shaolin performance, this is not it. The production is in 4 parts and each part has a very unique and characteristic music. There are a lot of different acts going on at once on different parts of the stage but it is well coordinated.

My biggest disappoint and the same for the Mount Tai production is why is the music faked? I think this one I am more disappointed because it is a "music ritual". What I mean is they will have for example players "playing" guzheng (the chinese guitar). But they are just fake playing while the music is being broadcasted through speakers. The first few acts it was okay as the music was in the background. However the third act was focused on these Guzheng players and the instruments. Which seems weird when the players are fake playing the whole time.

We bought tickets through our concierge. From prices pitched at use through various taxi drivers that day, our concierge had better prices. The arena is completely outdoors. We booked a taxi for the whole night, therefore I cannot comment as to whether or not there would be taxis after the show. Unfortunately there is quite a walk up to the actual theater. A bit tiring when you have young kids. There is a driveway that can bring you closer to the theater but we were told by security that it was for "internal cars" which probably means VIP guests. We left a bit early, not because the show wasn't good, my kids was just getting too tired. And the walk back was not very well-lit.

The show starts around 8 pm and goes until after 9:30 pm. We were told it can get cold but we were fine in light jackets. There is also thicker jackets for rent if you go in colders months.

Reading the reviews here I was surprised that many people rated it so highly. If you want to see a great performance, do yourself a favour go and see one done by the great Zhang Yi Mou. Sadly, this is not done by him. Zhang Yi Mou was actually earmarked to do this show, but as he was called away to do the 2008 Beijing Olympics, he was to busy to do this. Save your RMB 268 and give it a miss as this is a really mediocre performance. Why? 1. There is no story that touches you (ok fine Zen is void and everything is meaningless, so stay in your hotel room). 2. The performance is scattered simultaneously across multiple locations so you can only focus on one. 3. So parts of the performance cannot be seen if you are not seated in the centre. 4. The performers are so far away you can barely see anything. 5. The seating is not sheltered from wind so it can be bitterly cold. 6. They have a few monks seated in front and doing Nothing for the entire show. This performance relies on special effects and many performers to impress but sadly this is not enough. I really hope one day they will invite Zhang Yi Mou to revamp this show as it is such a waste with such a great stage.

Agreed with Andrew's comments, we watched on 25th April this is an average show as the centre stage is a bridge which is limitation to the show which should hv large platform to bring the performers closer to the audience. Individual performers are so small that their movement hardly appreciated. Should enlarge image by real time projections on the mountains. A good point, we love the large full moon appear next to the mountain which is beautiful.

If you appreciate music from this culture, you will enjoy the show. I would not recommend for young children because they detract from the show since it does not hold their interest.

I had no idea what to expect. My expectations were blown out of the water. The venue alone for this production was breath-taking. It's set on the side of a mountain in an outdoor amphitheatre-style setting. I don't think there are any bad seats in the place. The production was of the highest quality; and I've seen a few! It has been the highlight of my trip to China so far; and I've been here 2 weeks already. It certainly is a show for the whole family--90 minutes in length. I would recommend getting VIP tickets so that you may park closer to the venue. I believe the show runs ONLY in the evening.

Wow.. the background is Song Shan, one of the 5 famous mountain in China, located in central China, the dance choreography is extraordinary, maybe around 200 peoples there. The sound system is also very good. Since its early summer so the ambience quite comfy. The show performs everyday at 8pm except rain and winter.

This needs to be rated higher, this is a performance giving a brief history of the Shaolin Temple and demonstrates the spirit of what Shaolin is all about. I visited the Shaolin temple the same day - it's interesting, but is too busy with tourists and is in all honesty kind of similar to so many other temples in China.. A little underwhelming.

This Shaolin Zen performance however.. A different story.

The show has hundreds of performers, and uses a Mountain as the stage.. No joke. The stage area is a massive outside area, that covers a vast distance. You are literally sat looking at a mountain range that comes to life. The performers do dancing, kungfu and act the story with music and sounds effects.

The lighting is outstanding, the way they light up the mountain, a temple, rocks.. It all looks fantastic.. At one point there is a performance by moon light - and the lighting is so clever - they light up the top of the mountains with stars and the moon, I've never seen anything like it.

Also, as the stage is a mountain, you get the most amazing and spine tingling acoustics and sounds from the music and performance. It's amplified by the mountain backdrop in a brilliant way.

I purchased my Shaolin temple ticket and bought the ticket for this performance at the same time, for the evening. I can't recommend doing this enough. It was of course great to see the temple, but I actually learned and felt the spirit of the whole Shaolin temple and warriors through this performance - not from the temple.. and its 1000s of tourists.

Go see this!

More that 600 actors in this breathtaking outdoor show. There is no story, just beautifully choreographed music in four movements. I was a little annoyed that there was much talking going on through out the performance but if you can channel that out, it is wonderful!
