I have been visiting the KYN gym over the past ten years and each time my experience gets better and better.

It has a family feel to the place, everyone is included weather that's the training or just sitting around the bar area.

The location of the gym is stunning, you find yourself jut looking around at the beautiful views, and the sunsets each day.

The training can be as full on as you want it to be, you can do group session or private session.

The group session are in the morning and in the afternoon, you are warmed up, and coached about Muay Thai, no matter what level you are, you are looked after and helped at each stage of training.

It is amazing for fitness, or if you are looking to have a fight, it would be a perfect island to train on.

The head trainer P is a lovely man and looks after you like family

When you are not training, you have many people who work there who can give you ideas on what to do around the island, you can easily rent a bike within minute and be on your way.

Matt and Chewy run the bar and kitchen, they are both helpful relaxed and welcoming to all, and make it easy for you to order whatever you need.

The gym is owned by Harry and his daughter Lisa, Harry will pop by the bar from time to time, talk to him, he is a lovely man.

Lisa is an ex Mauy thai champion and just a lovely women, she knows alot about the island so annoy her by asking anything!

The island takes about 45 min to ride round and there are many bars and places to eat, the food everywhere is at a high standard.

If you go to Thailand you wont be disappointed going to KYN, everyone who goes for 1 day, stays a week, anyone how books a week stays for 2!

KYN Muay Thai Gym
Definitely my favourite gym, due people, location, training and food. The staff is supportive, in any way you need support. Trainings are tuff, but always to make you better and you are always watched after by the trainers. I haven’t found a gym where there is that much of sparring, and that’s where I believe comes the real growth. During the trainings there is more than enough time to improve your technics too. The intensity of the daily trainings will strength your condition and muscles, but, unless you ask for it, all the time the trainers spend it on your fighting skills. If you wish you can go running yourself at this beautiful island or make use of the fitness equipment in the gym. Many beautiful beaches, amazing restaurants and about two bars is what the island can give to you. And don’t forget the local people, no need to lock your door, this community is built on love, trust and 100% inclusivity. Those two bars are enough for some joy and entertainment and also to keep the island a peaceful place to be. The meals served at the gym are tasteful and made with love, perfect to feed you. After trying quiet some places I wouldn’t not only say that this is my favourite place to train Muay Thai, it is also my favourite place to train for life.

Intro
Having gained quite some weight over the last years I decided to take some drastic measures. I am a lazy guy by nature and I knew that losing weight would be impossible if I stayed at home. So I searched the internet, looking for something secluded (I am also easily distracted), nice and interesting. The Koh Yao Noi Muay Thai Gym promised all that: Located on a small island I would have small friendly Thai people around me kicking my sorry butt into shape. Between the training sessions I could stay at the beach, in a fetal position, whining about aching muscles. Perfect. Within a month I was there.

The island
Even though relatively close to the party destination Phuket, Koh Yao Noi is a very calm and relaxed place. Here, you won't find big crazy parties or crowded bars full with sunburned tourists getting wasted in the middle of the day. Instead you will find laid back and friendly locals and an island which still has not been taken over by tourism. Some might say that it is boring. For me it was perfectly relaxing.

The school
Big boys can train twice a day, for two hours per session. Really big boys can also do the morning run (9.5 km) and the evening run (2.5 km). The training itself consists of shadowboxing, sparring and pad work. The classes are held by two main trainers: Hlukhin and Noom, both seasoned fighters as well as incredibly dedicated yet funny people (you can read more about their background on the schools website). Additional trainers are there if necessary. The school has a boxing ring, several sandbags as well as basic weights. Everybody is free to use the equipment during the day but honestly: You will be happy for a break after official training. If you are interested in it, the school will organize a fight for you, but you better be prepared to train for it. Don't expect a show where you fight a guy who is getting paid to play around with curious tourists. It will be a real fight. You might win. You might lose.

Training starts with a collective warm up followed by shadow boxing and light sparring (boxing, kicking, grappling, no ground fight). During that, the trainers pick you out to do individual pad work. Training stamina and basic patterns makes a big part of the training but often they will also teach more subtle things, techniques a beginner like me would have never noticed in a real fight. Hlukhin and Noom are very good at adjusting their demands to your level of experience. Being a total beginner in Muay Thai (I used to do Wing Chun for many years) they made sure that I understand the basics. They don't try to pamper you, just because you came for a few weeks. They will point out your weaknesses, they will yell at your mistakes - not because they like picking at you but because they want you to improve and because they love what they do. Getting an approving nod after an incredibly exhausting session usually made my day, making me feel like I earned something.

Conclusion
I stayed there for a month. Not having done any sport in the last years I usually ended up crawling out of the gym, often directly to the nearby pool. And when I stopped panting and whining and watched how the red sun set while floating in the warm water I realized that this was the best damn thing I had done in a long time. (And btw: I lost 7 kg during my time there, yeah!)

I booked in to K.Y.N for 1 month but I was very unhappy there so left after 2 weeks and was told that they do not do refunds.

So my advice is not to book long term as you can always extend.

Why did I not enjoy my stay?

Firstly, the training.
This was very repetitive. Every session was exactly the same which made it very boring. As well as making you very prone to injury. Other camps vary what you do from one day to the next to prevent injuries but not this one.
People who were there for a few weeks could not train twice a day, 6 days a week due to injury.
The people that were there long term barely even trained, they just sat around drinking beer and smoking cigarettes.

The trainers can barely speak English so it is very hard for them to communicate. It was basically watch what they do and copy. Not a good way to learn.

The training is only 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour in the afternoon. I do more exercise at home when I work 8 hour days.

The location.
The pictures show that it is by the beach. You can not swim in the water and you cannot walk on the beach. So, yes it is by the beach but not a very good one.
You also need a scooter to get to shops, bars etc, which is an added cost.

The food.
Two small meals included in the price so a great deal of extra money is required in order to keep you going.

The staff.
None of the staff want to do any work.
One of the reasons I chose this camp was that there was a English owner, who I thought would solve any problems. Not the case. She was of no help what so ever, when it came to my problems. Sorry we don't do refunds.

Big group.
They advertise that they have small numbers so it ensures the training doesn't get over crowded. A large group came when I was there from a single gym in Germany. So it was definitely overcrowded.

So, my advice it to find another camp but if you do decide to go here just book 1 week and extend if you like it.

I only wish I'd read pinkyhallgates review before. or if i did. i wish id taken notice. i had almost exactly the same experience and was SO disappointed because I'd read so many positive reviews before hand and I do understand why so I hope that people take the time to read this before committing to a long duration commitment before trying. pinkyhallgates has great advice. try before you buy- if it's for you commit to longer.
positives- 1) the trainers are lovely. they are incredibly good at what they do. for me language was not an issue. their experience and skill at their profession crushed any language barriers. although one or two may seem a little narky at you at times, i think it is because they genuinely love muay thai and want you to be the best that you can be. they're good sports and work incredibly hard.
2) location. the island is beautiful. i don't know how anyone could not fall in love with it.
3) the kitchen staff. their food, their manor. their general i will do anything to look after you attitude. amazing.
why i personally was disappointed... as I've already mentioned the trainers there are good. they know what they are doing and how to teach. however, i don't know who decided on the structure of the classes but i feel like it's letting them down. this was my fourth muay thai camp in thailand and it was the first one that id been to that had such a rigid structure for sessions and SO much time shadow boxing. Again I understand their thought process as shadow boxing is when they do give you one on one time. but if the group is big- this means over half an hour shadow boxing. which I'm sure is useful if you're pro and understand how to utilize shadow boxing time- otherwise you're just a fool flailing against air for far too long out of your day. if you do two sessions a day- it can be up to an hours worth of your day shadow boxing. the trainers are working their arses off. but you're looking at three minutes time tops with them telling you how bad you are 'Jay Baruchel ing' against air and considering each session is little over an hour. that's a lot of time flailing in the wind. after the extensive time shadow boxing is sparring. either just legs, just boxing, or both. and as i can't stress enough these are great trainers who know how to fight beautiful muay thai. i learnt technique from them for sure. and for my first two weeks of stay i practiced technique with some great people learning too. my third week was the week that the gym group of 25 came in. great fighters but they wanted to do just that. fight. i sustained more injuries in the first session from sparring with them than i had the whole two weeks before (re pinkyhallgates post. must have been the same group). not only that but i left feeling like all the technique i had learnt was pointless because if someone is coming at you like wildfire then all i as an amateur could do was step back or take/attempt to block the beats. to which i was told by the trainers that i was scared and the new team on mass was cheered on as they hit with power and karate kicks. which brings me to my next cynical criticism. i think the financial drive of this gym outweighs all the pros of how amazing the staff it employs are. the session are on average one hour and ten minutes. you have to be there for 15 minutes before to warm up yourself (a rule that applied to single travelers. not the group of 25). 20- 30 minutes of your time is then spent shadow boxing. the remaining time is spent sparring and/or clinching. with bag work and pads at the end. my maths isn't great and i only know the time for shadow boxing and compulsory stretching as i was counting away the minutes of my life watching the clock, but this is hardly any time on pads. something i was used to and everyone i spoke to was used to. also a massive difference from every muay thai gym id been to before... which meant people brought private classes. the general rhetoric amongst the people who were there when i was, was that if you want to learn more- you pay more. at 600 baht a session this is incredibly reasonable. however. on no other camp have i been on was this the deal. you were SO exhausted from training that both your mind and body would not be able to contemplate a private session. and again this brings me back to the point that the trainers at this gym are really good and makes me very skeptical as to why they structure the group sessions in this way. and never change them. also to the point that prior to the arrival of the 25 the emphasis was on muay thai technique. yet when the on mass group arrived, anything went. this made sparring dangerous and with a completely different objective to learning technique- which is how they justify so much time shadow boxing.
the vast majority of the reviews on here are amazingly positive and i met people who were re visiting and had every intention of coming back. but i cannot stress enough that this is very different to the muay thai camps and training that i have been on before and i would whole heartly recommend you try a week before committing to longer. i still did not understand by the end of my time there why they structured every session the same, why they never taught from the front so that all could learn at the same time, why they didn't separate new from pro/ knew the drill and taught them in a small group rather than have so much time shadow boxing and then pair sparring partners up who have completely differently abilities experience and expectations.

I started of my Southeast Asia trip at KYN and it was truly a great experience. I met a bunch of lovely people and the training was great. The trainers pay attention to every single student and each one recieves one on one time in group classes, they are tough and really want you to improve. The island was also an exceptionally beautiful, small and calm place, I felt so at home. I came for three weeks left for two days and immediately came back for another few days. It was great for me,because you could combine the intensive classes with the relaxed and simple island life in your free time, which is the best combination. Lisa, Hlukhin and Geoff are lovely and welcoming people, who are doing a great job. I know I will come back, hopefully for a longer period of time, and I could only recommend others to do the same thing!

P.S: Sitting in Myanmar about to meet up with a girl I met at camp, as I said truly a great way to meet lovely people

The worst part of my trip was having to say goodbye.
I stayed at KYN for 2 months and i loved every second of it. I had the best training experience possible. The trainers were amazing and i met so many fantastic people during my stay. I found everyone to be super supportive and helped me gain as much skills as i could. The training can be a bit tough but they will help you through as much as they can. There is alot of sparing which was my favourite part so there are gunna be times were you do get hit but it was how i learnt the most. Lisa (owner) Kristen (manager ) are both awesome and extremely helpful with anything you need, especially Lisa cause she is also a fighter, and if your lucky enough u might even get to see her fight which was a brilliant experience. You are also training with her husband who is undefeated and is very tough but he helps you so much with technique and being the best you can be. They are situated in an amazingly beautiful island and the locals are sweet, kind and always wanting to help and give you a hand. I found it to be the safest place i have ever traveled to. Cant wait to come back in the future. Miss my muay thai family already.

I really liked my staying at KYN Muay thay gym.
Lisa, on of the owners is a great person, She was the one I met when I arrived and I got the welcoming feeling immediately.
Hlukhin, the head trainer, also a person with great personality. He and the other trainers, Bou, Ho and Nok will teach you the style of Muay Thai down to the smallest details.

I got the feeling that they are more into the technique. First we was sparring only with kicks, after that it was full muay thai and after that only punches. We did the pad work out at the of every session.

Over all, this was one of the best gym I was wisitng on my travelling and 1 week of staying was to short, feelt more like 3 days or something. I really family atmosphere, when it's not training time you can talk with the trainers and all of them are really nice people.
Every saturday they go to one of the restaurangs on the Island for a buffe night with a scene were any one who wants can sing.

Coming to KYN has undoubtedly been one of the best experiences of my life - I originally booked for 4 weeks, but ended up extending my training to nearly 4 months, if that speaks to my impression of the gym!

Like many other students I have trained with at KYN, I arrived with no Muay Thai experience. However, regardless of your experience level, the trainers give you plenty of one-on-one attention with specific detail paid to technique, so I felt this was a great gym for someone looking to build a solid foundation in traditional Muay Thai. Classes generally range from 5-15 students, so there is a good ratio of trainers to students, meaning you will not be allowed to form bad habits!

When deciding on what gym to go to, I had read some of the Trip Advisor reviews complaining about the teaching style/personality of the head training Hlukhin (a very accomplished Muay Thai multi-champion). However, I have not experienced anything close to what some of the reviews claim. Hlukhin is very passionate about teaching Muay Thai, and whether you are a straight beginner like myself or someone with years of experience, he will pour his heart and soul into seeing you improve. If you are a sensitive person than maybe his passionate training style could rub you the wrong way, but I have NEVER felt he intentionally tried to hurt me or be demeaning. He is a fighter through and through, but every interaction I’ve had with him outside of training has reinforced my belief that he is a humble man with a good heart, who really wants his students to succeed. If he sees you doing something wrong, he will point it out. If you want a gym where you just work up a sweat kicking pads while someone tells you “good job”, then yes, maybe this gym isn’t for you. I have felt fortunate to have a Muay Thai legend give me direct feedback during every training session!

If you are looking for a gym where there is a familial atmosphere, then you’ll love KYN. Since everyone is living and training together, and the island itself is pretty small, you end up spending a lot of time together. I’ve made some great friends, and have really enjoyed this, andI think this aspect is unique compared to many other gyms!

Overall, I’ve been very pleased with everything, including the accommodation, food, training, facilities, staff, and surrounding island. If you are looking for a location where you can really focus on training in an absolutely beautiful setting, then I’d highly recommend KYN!

If you are looking to train in Muay thai, to fight or to lose weight, this is the best place to go.
The island is the best island in Thailand, he hasn't been ruined by tourist yet.
The GYM itself, beyond amazing, its run by the nicest people. who just make you feel welcome, its like a family, I keep going back, even if its for a few days during a holiday.

If you go to any other gym you have made the wrong choice!

You will go to KYN once, and you will just keep coming back!
