I was struck by the simplicity of the cathedral’s interior which provides space for worship and a small number of high-quality art treasures.

My wife and I had a short stop off in Marina di Carrara whilst on a TUI cruiser and enjoyed the visit. The cathedral was beautiful, with a wonderful use of its famous marble. Totally open, the inner is amazing, tranquil and touching in serenity.

The Carrara Cathedral dates back to the 11th century, nearly all of the exterior is covered by (what else than) local Carrara marble.
The lower section of the façade and the side area near the St. John Portal are characterized by a bichrome decoration with geometrical marble tarsias.
This part of the building can be dated to the early 12th century by the influences of the Pisan Gothic style on the capitals and the architrave.
This style was also widespread in Liguria at the time, as shown by the similarity of the Cathedral's portal with that of the Genoa Cathedral, finished before 1142.
The façade, finished in the second half of the 14th century, has a bichrome decoration with pale and dark marble stone. The portal is crowned by sculptures inspired to medieval bestiaries, and surmounted by a Gothic rose window with twisted columns, each different from the others.
The bell tower, standing at 33 m (108 ft), was also built in the 14th century.
The sculptors of the main portal and of the capitals of the first three spans in the interior belonged to the school of Wiligelmo.
The church has a rectangular plan with a semi-circular apse.
The interior of the Cathedral has a taller nave with wooden trusses, and two smaller cross-vaulted aisles. It houses the sarcophagus of St. Ceccardus, patron saint of Carrara.
Admission is free.

Amazing church, a bit simpler than some of the major ones but somewhat more authentic and genuine. Was a bit tricky to find, make sure you know your google maps.

In general, all the city of Carrara feels very lost and out of time.. its very sad. The duomo its from the IX century and definitely was beautiful and powerful in the past. Now, its just a old and forgotten monument in the middle of a lost city.

A truly amazing structure with a long and storied history. My grandparents were married there in 1899 and I was able to get a copy of their marriage certificate.

This is an old church well hidden in Carrara. Ofcourse marble building. Totally open and no church-official refusing ladies entry when in shorts.

The façade of the Romanesque/Gothic Carrara cathedral is massive, whereas the rose window is as ethereal as a doily. The beautiful quality of the marble gives it varying shades according to the hour of day: from bluish, to rosy, to sparkling white.

is time to stop, and enjoy this little corner of Italy. I will not spoil the surprise of discover the Duomo and all his interested corner. Just visit, out side has been clean up, inside is cover by the sign of the time, that make the Duomo real, back in time, like a true time machine. Religious or not, doesn't not matter, this is a mandatory stop.

The best place in Italy. We stop for 15 min and spend 4 hours. It's interesting just go and look around there. Not much tourist and that's great!
