This monument was built in the memory of those soldiers, who died during First World War. It is located in Goubert- Avenue, opposite sea side promenade. A small park is constructed around it with a blue gate in front .Opening timings are 10Am to 5 PM. The structure has four pillars , with Inner two pillar is attached with a plain board like wall ,written on it is “Des Indes François “ .In front of it there is a statue ,could be of a soldier. There is small road filled with gravel and pebbles just before it, which signifies typical French pattern .This structure reminds about the past French colonial regime of Pondicherry .The French war memorial is illuminated and decorated on every 14thJuly on Bastile Day.

The fact that this memorial is right on the promenade and so well maintained makes you wonder why other cities can not follow the example set by Pondicherry.... Check it out in the evening when lights are on....

Located on the Rocl Public beach of Pondicherry, this monument is visible while walking on the beach. I guess the entry is restricted to this monument as when i visited the place the gates were closed.

My daughter wanted to visit this place. So we did. And we came back feeling completely clueless - there is no access to the memorial (or we could not find it) - no note, no plaque.. Just a slice of land with a structure in the middle.
You might wonder, well C, what did you expect from this place? - well, we expected something befitting the name "French War Memorial".
We just viewed it from the gate and took a pic. You could show it to your kids as you are finishing your walk on the beach.

Historical obviously, can take few photos. Nothing much to see. If you are at rock beach you can visit this place easily. I believe you cant enter, just see and take photos from a distance.

This monument, located on the promenade, poignantly reminds us of the many soldiers from French India who lost their lives in the First World War fighting "Pour la Patrie". As far as the French were concerned, these were French citizens laying down their lives for their country.

This is on the promenade itself so if youve already planned to walk along the length of the promenade then this will be opposite the le cafe. Its just a war memorial for the French soldiers who fought the war.

I like to visit Pondicherry during next December and it will be my first visit to this historic place. I am travelling from Calicut, Kerala by Train. Please give me some helpful tips on the attractions, stay facilities and other useful features of Pondi. I like to stay there two nights. So please suggest me a fine itinerary.

I have visited the White Town in Pondicherry.
To begin with, choose a good stay- there are tonnes of options to choose from, this will make your stay pleasant to some extent.
Places to visit - If you stay in White Town, - Rocky Beach, Promenade, War Memorial, Aurobindo Ashram will be closer to visit, that can be covered in a day
In addition to that, there are other places you can visit which are slightly away from the city: Auroville, Serenity Beach and Paradise beach, you can plan this for a day
If you wish to visit, you could go to the Perumal Temple in the White Town.
If you are here on a Sunday, go see the local flea market, you could shop some items.
Also do not miss to try out the local cafes in town, for the view and also the food!
