Economically and Environmentally useless. Provides nothing to the local people of Waihi even though they claim to directly employ 350 people. View isn't even nice. If you want a great view, take a hike around the ranges that haven't been destroyed by mines and greedy...More

if you don't want to walk you can climb up to a large viewing area and get a feel for the way the mine used to work. It is not currently working due to a landslide

Was interesting looking at the massive hole dug for mining and the big trucks. Other than that not a lot else to see.

the area of this walk by waihi township is well worth a look. See the pump house, the mine pit and the giant mine truck. However, the rest of the walk is well below pa. Signs are no longer present, the walk now encompasses a...More

It’s just a very very big hole in the ground not much more to say really, there is a very good walkway around it, worth it just to have a look

Really interesting look at gold mining through the ages. The open mine pit isn't currently in operation due to a major slip. The large historical exhibits are great to see.

We saw the building first, sticking out above the town, so went to investigate and found this gem. The mine was active until Jan 2018, when there was a landslide, which made mining unsafe. It was still very interesting to walk around and read about...More

WE nearly just drove through Waihi as it was along the route. Drove into town and discovered MIne Pit Rim Walkway. Very scenic, great pic opportunity and refreshing. The rockfall closed the opencast mine and it will be interesting to see if it opens again....More

Picked a fabulous day with lots of sunshine which made the whole open cast mine shine like gold but of course it isnt! We chose to walk clockwise so we could go to the viewing area first and enjoyed getting up close to such a...More

An opportunity to see the size and depth of a mine. Unfortunately a rock fall on the north side has meant that the walk moves away from the rim but through interesting local plants and bushes.
