Initially we were taken to the rim of the large open cut pit. We did not see any activity in the pit as it was closed abruptly by a recent massive rock slip. There were machines operating immediately above the slip. Looked like a suicidal occupation to me. There was a 2.7km conveyor that took the ore 2.7km to the... More

It wasn't what we expected. You were taken out on a bus and went to the open mine where they explained a lot about how open mines work and about the 'slip' that occurred a few years back. Your were then taken to a live underground gold and silver mine were you stay on the bus unless ur in a... More

I am pleased to have gone on the tour but wouldn't do it again. The tour guide was new to the job and didn't concentrate on what he was doing. The teacher guide was very informative, but our tour was spoilt by the new guide going off to do his own thing. I would definitely encourage people to do this... More

Our guide Mike knew a lot about the open pit and the current underground mining. He made it interesting and fun to learn how gold and silver are extracted from the ore. We were really impressed by how the mining company cleans up the area and reclaims the land so that it becomes a habitat for birds. A great way... More

You can walk around the rim of Martha mine and you will be impressed, but the real treat is to take a tour. You will be amazed by what you learn, our guide was knowledgeable about the mine, the area, the history and was able to tell stories of the people who had worked the mines in years gone by.... More

Very impressed with the Waihi goldmine tour. Our driver/guide Mike gave us a great overview of the workings of this enormous operation. His humerous commentary and knowledgable insight made for an enjoyable outing. It's well worth combining with the Goldmine museum visit where their friendly staff and interactive activities brings the lives of the original prospectors and miners of today... More

Was driving through Waihi with the intention of walking around the mine pit rip for a bit and decided to do the tour as a spur of the moment thing when I drove past the discover center. Surprisingly I was the only person on the 12.30 tour. The guide was friendly and informative, and provided lots of fantastic information. It... More

The three of us were the only people signed up for a Saturday 10:30 tour, but our guide was wonderfully interactive and enthusiastic anyway. We learned about the gold and silver history of the entire region, saw the open pit mine and mine shafts, saw the processing mill, and the mountain made of tailings. Great job!
