Last year when our daughter and family visited from Kuala Lumpur we all went to the kumara Box and looked around at all the wonderful things Ernie has on show to do with the growing of kumara in the kaipara. My granddaughter who lives in Dargaville was able to take her English cousin around and explain lots of Ernies curiosities... More

This was a fun way to learn about Kumara's. See the fields and some fun things Ernie has made. Allow a couple of hours.

You must visit the Kumara Box if you are visiting Dargaville. Taste our local Kumara and learn the story of how Kumara came to be here, how it is grown and distributed. Meet Ernie and Mavis, enjoy their wonderful hospitality in a fun, friendly family environment.

Having been advised by folk in the know that Ernie was a 'local - hero' and worth a visit, we were fired up to go and see him. Our several phone calls were unanswered, our enquiry, in person, to the Tourist Information Office drew a blank, we were advised that the attraction might or might not be open and that... More

Beside the Kumara Box is a strip of fields that has been planted and filled with kitsch and includes 'NZ's smallest church'. It nly costs $2 pp to eneter (honesty box at the gate) and may be a pleasant break (possibly if you have a picnic) and children may find many of the kiwiana amusing. Probably not worth a special... We were a party of 6 - a ten year old, her parents and 3 of her grandparents. We phoned ahead to enquire about a visit in the afternoon and arranged... More
