Fun for the locals, families and people visiting the area the kids absolutely love it . Daily the pelicans get a good feed thanks to the seafood shop and there are so many birds that love to come for their daily feed, the pelicans are very big but very gentle so your able to get pretty close to them.
Its also a nice place for a swim and some lunch at the park , the broad water has stunning views its very relaxing and the fish and chips is the best at the Charis Seafoods.

When you are in Gold coast, there are two activities MUST_TO_DO for all age groups, one is pelican feeding and another is visit to Glow worm cave. You need to reach at least an hour in advance to get proper seating on steps. Do not forget to carry cap and water with you as sun can be sometimes scorching. Always keep a passage for the birds to fly in and fly out. Do not wear flashy cloths which can distract the birds. Enjoy the experience

Living near Charis seafood , I often walk by and watch the local pelican activity. At 1.30 most days these very large birds fly in and wait patiently in the lagoon for the fish off cuts from Charis Seafood cafe.
Quite a large crowd will gather to watch this spectacle, often bus loads of tourists stop as well. Cafe owner will come out with large bins of seafood waste and the pelicans with their sharp eyesight hone in!
The birds literally march up the beach en masse , open their very large mouths , catch the fish , retreat, and the bird behind takes its place.
Have your camera ready for great photography.
Good park for relaxation/ swimming, eating in one of the many cafes around.
Plenty of accommodation close by plus transport handy.

Pelicans curiously turn up at the appointed hour for the 130 feeding. Charis feeds the herd the fish scraps from their shop. Popular (getting close parking can be tough)

This is a free entertainment. No admission fees, No parking fees. The staff from one of the fish market shop will feed the Pelicans daily at 1:30pm. If you are going to park, suggest to get there before 1pm. Unlike other zoos, you don't even have to buy fish to feed the Pelicans. Of course, if you got there too early and wanted the kids to have exclusively feeding experience, buy a few dollars of fishes to feed them before or after the official feeding time. But the birds can get quite aggressive, so if your kids too young, you may not want to feed them yourself. Just enjoy someone else does it.

It was a short walk from our unit and a good experience for our grandkids to see these large, beautiful birds feeding, even if it was a bit of a frenzy.

Great for the kids. Right on the beach watching the Pelicans and other Aussie bird life in their natural habitat. We had fish and chips, the kids played at the park and the beach afterwards. It was a good family activity.

The first time I went here was in 2014. Now, the area where the fish is thrown to the pelicans needs to be fenced in. The people get very close to the pelicans, so the birds sometimes even need to walk through people. Some would even swim in the water and watch the pelicans eat their fish closely!
At the end of the day these are still wild animals which are lucky to live in freedom. Unfortunately, many people are not able to respect this.
The fish and chips shop which offers this event for free serves yummy and well-priced food – make sure you order something!

We were staying across the road at the Grand Hotel and only had to cross the road for the 1:30pm feeding.
Charis Seafood puts all the scraps from the filleting and old fish into a few buckets and every day a couple of blokes come out and stage a feeding for the assembled tourist. Large bus loads of tourist drop in for the show. The really fun bit is the pelicans start to assemble from about midday in large numbers. It is fantastic to watch them flying in with their family groups and land on the lagoon or perch on light towers. Pelicans have genetic markings that are handed down through their genes, similar to magpies. Look at the wing patterns and family groups will be the same, so a flock can consist of mum, dad, sons, daughters, grandparents and so on. Given they live for 20 odd years they can have large family groups with males being bigger than females.
When the feeding takes place the pelicans are quite polite to each other and don't create a frenzy, They seem to get a fish and back out of the fray to allow the next bird to progress to the front. The Charis guys get the crowd into it as well feeding the birds.
Great show, take a good camera and get there about an hour early.

I have brought visitors here three times and they enjoyed watching the pelicans feeding at 1.30, on my last visit my daughter had a chance to feed them and she enjoyed it. Natalie commented that she has never been so close to wild pelicans and its free.
