We didn't go the center, but we did go on the Big Sky Stargazing tour that was booked through the Hermitage Hotel Activity Desk -- it was amazing. It starts with a 30 minute video of the sky and explaining what we would be seeing. Then they give you warm coats (very much appreciated) and drive you a short distance... More

The Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Center is part of the Hermitage Hotel complex. The “Explorer Pass” gives you entry to the small museum and the theatre that shows the 3D movie on Mt. Cook. There are also a number of movies and Planetarium shows that are available from 7:00 to 20:00 daily. The pass allowed us to see the shows... More

The main feature of this space is movies about Mount Cook, Nepal, and Hillary. Only limited actual material. So a mediocre grade of three stars.

The whole of the Centre and the history behind the preparations for the climbs on Everest and other adventures is hard to believe. Today we take helicopters and light weight gear for granted. The attempts and training and the equipment were basic but the challenges were faced. If you go to the site do visit all the attractions and information... More

If you came this far then you should go to see this exhibit. This was the area where Sir Hillary practiced his skills as a homegrown New Zealand boy. You tickets are good for 24 hours so you can go back to watch different movies being played in a proper sit down theatre including a planetarium, as well as viewing... More

We were very excited to visit Mount Cook for the dark sky reserve that we stayed an extra night as the evening we arrive was sold out. Unfortunately the weather was very cloudy and we doubted all day that we'd be taken out to the observation area. When it came to the time to make the decision on whether to... More

Thought this place was great. Took in the museum and three of the shows. Great insight into a fascinating man. Can't comment on the star gazing aspect. Would recommend.

Several shows in the cinema were very good -- the Hillary/Everest one excellent. But the Stargazing was a total waste of time and money as well as the most expensive (70 NZD)

The Centre shares the story of the greatest climber ever; Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person conquered the Everest. Movies, pictures and museum objects are amazing.
