- Rotiman1Sydney, Australia2,018 contributionsSpend a few hours here to enhance your mount Cook experienceExcellent visitors centre for advice about walking options, an excellent exhibition over two floors a small shop and toilets. On the day we arrived it was recommended we do the Hooker walk as weather was deteriorating which proved excellent as we enjoyed a beautiful walk. The exhibition really requires a few hours to learn about the history and geography of the area. As my short walk day pack was damaged I purchased an excellent fold up pack which will be great for future travel.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 October 2023
- Stephanie MSechelt, Canada435 contributionsGood StopWe so often find the Visitors Centres in New Zealand to be full of information, interesting products and very helpful staff and the Mount Cook Visitors Centre certainly is all of this. There is also really interesting information about the area and the history of it. We recommend stopping in here when you visit Mount Cook area.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 January 2024

There’s some interesting exhibits and a range of films showing on small screens. - woodfamily2013Birkenhead, New Zealand111 contributionsMueller hut walkThe staff are very friendly and informative. They gave us a lot of useful info regarding the mueller hut and track. it is a much harder walk than imagined . Straight up for about 4 hours . When you reach the hut is all worth it . we actually went in January 2019 and there was ice/snow all around the hut . All day and night we were surronded by the sound of avalanches . Very unique experience . I would love to come back one day .Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 14 July 2024

Obviously this is the nexus for visitors to the park, so everyone drops by at some time. There are excellent displays with plenty of information for all types of interest. The staff are extremely friendly and responsive. The grounds are good for sitting or having a snack. The views are, of course, outstanding.
The parking is terrible. Absolutely terrible. A proper parking plan needs to be created, with clearly marked parking lots rather than the crazy, haphazard practice adopted by visitors. Bus drivers were the worst, completely ignoring signs saying 'no buses' and ploughing on through as if they owned the roads.

Amazing, easy going trek (3 hr return); you will be rewarded with some unforgettable views of Mt Cook. The 3 suspension bridges are a bonus with the river running ferociously underneath. All through the valley itself is gorgeous.

Mainly about tracks and routes information, as well as interesting spots in Mt Cook Region, they can help you with plenty of helpful things. Not only information but also ticketing, as well as a souvenir and warm clothes shop. Also a mini museum about Mt Cook Region and history are also located here. At a walking distance from Hermitage Hotel and Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre.

The visitor centre is a half-day activity in itself! We visited to check which walks we should do, and ended up spending over an hour in there reading through all of the information panels. There is so much history to learn about, and I had a rainy day I'd definitely spend some time in the visitor centre. We didn't find the person at the desk overly helpful on which walks we should try which was a little disappointing. We were very excited to start the hikes, and unfortunately she didn't share the same passion and was very bland about explaining what we could do around the area. Apart from that little mishap, the centre was great. You can also pick up some great t-shirts etc from there.

The visitor centre is huge with lots of information on the area. I was in Aoraki Mount Cook for a week with my son and he never got tired of wandering around the displays. He also had great fun doing the Kiwi Ranger activities. The DOC staff were really friendly and full of useful information, and good at suggesting walks based on your experience.

This visitors centre is great. We had our 9 year old with us, and he did a free “Kiwi Ranger” activity book at the centre. The staff were awesome and really encouraged him to think about the park and the environment.
The centre is much bigger than it looks. Make sure you go downstairs, and go to the old hut outside.

Am I right in thinking there is a good deal of confusion in the listings and reviews for the Aoraki/Mt Cook DOC Visitor Centre and AMC National Park? Many of the reviews posted here have no mention of the Visitor Centre, rather they are about the National Park, walks and the scenic views.

I recently saw A British woman's very negative commentary on the DOC Visitor Center; her remarks seemed to be completely at odds with what we experienced in several hours at the visitor center, and I could not but wonder if she was referring to some other facility -- perhaps the Hermitage Hotel's Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Center, which is mainly a large, expensive, very disappointing shop with IMEX movies. We would advise others not to waste their time at the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Center [in spite of the illustrious associations with its name].
It is very important to note that we found the DOC Visitor Center to be one of the best facilities of its kind. It is free; its staff is knowledgeable and they provide very effective information; it houses interesting exhibits and videos; and it has a sign-in register to keep track of hikers and climbers.
