Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The walk is well worth a stop if driving through Arthur's Pass (which is well worth driving through!)
Waterfall is pretty impressive, especially after rain. It was blowing quite a gale through the pass whilst we were there so do be prepared with some warm clothes.
Long drops available in car park.

Short walk up A LOT of stairs, with a great view of the waterfall from the viewing platform at the top. Seriously, a lot of stairs. Take your time doing this one. Beautiful view of the falls from the top, but try to go later on or really early to avoid the crowds. Waiting for your turn at the railing so you can get a photo isn't fun.

This was a great way to do a quick (half-hour each way) walk up to the Devil's Punchbowl waterfall. Starting from the parking lot just past the main village of Arthur's Pass, it's about a 30-minute walk up to the waterfall, and almost as long on the return. It does require traveling up about 300 or so steps, with a few downhill tracks along the way, but mostly uphill. It can be a little difficult for someone not so fit (like myself), but since it's not time consuming, you can easily take it at your own pace, have a rest on one of the steps along the way, and take in the surroundings along the way. Definitely worth it to see the waterfall at the top!

We pulled into the car park which had loads of space to park up. No overnight parking here so freedom campers take note! There was a choice of walks around this particular area. We just chose the quick and easy one up to Devils Punchbowl waterfall. There was some info at the beginning about why this area is called Arthurs pass, really interesting reading if you get the chance before you do any walks. The walk only took about 30 mins up a lot of wooden steps and most of it was shaded so no view as such. But when you do get to the waterfall you are greeted with a beautiful sight of nature. There is a large viewing platform with information about the waterfall and why it was named so. We were going to put the drone up but it was a bit windy and not sure if we were allowed or not so decided not to!! A great walk for all abilities and not too far either. Plenty of other longer walks around the area with different abilities for walkers so spoilt for choice in this wonderful beautiful area of the South Island.

We opted for this short hike on a rainy day, since the visibility was poor and a hike at elevation would have been a poor choice. It was a good way to see some beautiful scenery with an easy and safe walk in any weather. We walked over to another falls (bridal veil?) which was less impressive, but the walk through the beech forest was nice.

This track is a must if you love going up and down steps - all 400 of them! The waterfall at the top is beautiful as it cascades down. You may need to carry your little ones as some steps rise nine inches or more, although there are some that are six inches max. The view over the mountains is spectacular! Bring plenty of water. The steps are well shaded so even if a warm day, it's cooler. Bring water!

This is a short hike but a lot of stairs. Quite a fair bit of vertical to be climbed to get to the observation deck for the falls but it’s only for a short time and we’ll worth the climb. Ok for reasonably fit kids and older folks.

I'm your typical overweight American tourist who doesn't get enough exercise. I'm also over 60 years old. I though I might struggle to do this walk, but it wasn't as bad as I thought even though it did take me about 75 minutes to do with rest time built in. Our guide said there were about 450 steps, about half with handrails. I wish there were more with handrails because the ones without were higher than normal. Still, I'm proud of my accomplishment and the view of the falls made it worth it.

My six month pregnant partner and I took off up the hill to see the devils punch bowl. It is a lovely waterfall and they’ve done a great job with the viewing platform. It is a steep walk though guys. You need a good level of fitness. Located close to town and an easily accessible 60 minutes return trip. Serious hikers will do it in 40.

So yes, it's a big uphill walk .. lots of steps but so worth it for the view of the waterfall, and the surrounding Arthurs Pass. Do dress appropriately and bring something warm. Can be icey where the sun hasn't touched yet. However you soon warm up once you get climbing those steps!
