Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My review title says it all. The beach is ok, but loaded with tons of hippies doing hippie stuff and smoking weed (not that there is anything wrong with that, but it was overwhelming and not exactly our scene when trying to relax on a beach vacation). The town is OK; there are definitely better towns around. Almost NOTHING is open until late in the morning/early afternoon, save for a few restaurants. There are dogs allover town that bark 24/7 (I’m not kidding) that we found it difficult to sleep, even with earplugs. After 2 nights we ended up leaving and staying in La Crucecita.

While this happened 1km over in San Augustinillo it is the sister beach of Mazunte which while I understand was once a big turtle fishing village, the authorities stopped that and now it is a mass shark finning operation which I hear happens daily. These men are not even aware of the damage they are doing to their own eco system. Tons of reef sharks being finned for the rich in China and their trunks thrown in the water for the birds. While swimming in the waters at this beach and Mazunte I pulled out plastic bags and straws. Mazunte town itself is over priced compared with nearby Zipolite which is far better, everything is more expensive and it is run by hippies who have no clue. Go to Zipolite if considering this region. Mazunte officials must take action if they want a future here!

As a Mexican, I love my country, but there’s definitely better beaches and places to relax. Place is crowded and there’s only one street with tons of cars, motorcycles and pedestrians walking, we almost got hit by a motorcycle. I would say a little bit chaotic, also a lot of the places were unsanitary, no soap at all. I am leaving right now and going to zipolite.

These waters can be rough and tumble. Some days waves are big and strong. Need to be careful getting in and out. Weekends beach is crowded but plenty of area down the beach to find that is more quiet. Plenty of restaurant lin8ng the beach and lots of foreigners along the way.

Very quiet & save beach. Lovely for lunch. Great boat trip & whales, turtles & wonderful night life. Big waves but easy to swim past.. no real problems with tides. Best to go Oct to feb. As get hot & rainy in summer

Mazunte is for me one of the most beautiful beaches I've seen, this is a mandatory stop if you visit Oaxaca. Waves are hard, this is a surf beach.

Its a great place with a dark side: illegal shark fishing is taking place here. I was really shocked to witness and to get shout by the fisherman not to take photos. They know it is illegal what they do. But why is no one of the officials in Mazunte stopping this crime on this important and majestic animals of the sea?

Beautiful beach and scenery with nice bars. To see 20+ small sharks beeing slaughtered on the spot right in front of everyone (for fins? which is apparantly a weekly repetition) kind of took the magic of the place away for us. It left a disgusting smell for days.

Rather not tidy beach with lots of dogs... If you are searching for nice and clean beach better choose San Augustinillo

The beach at Mazunte is surrounded by hills. There are chairs to rent for as low as 150 pesos which include an umbrella. In the middle of the beach are restaurant chairs and umbrellas. Men stand out along the beach enticing you to use their chairs. They say you don’t have to spend any money, but we felt we needed to which was not a hardship as there was lots of beer and shrimp cocktail all reasonably priced.

The slope to the water is steep except at the very end which is where most people were swimming. The water is beautiful and clear. There are many topless women sunbathing, swimming or just walking the beach. The atmosphere is very laid back and friendly. We left our belongings at our chairs and took walks and swam without fear of theft.
