    Wonderful Walk
Easy parking on an initially rainy day, then visited the Visitor Centre which had an excellent variety of resources and gifts for sale. Walked up the valley on the designated path around the reservoire. The views and scenery are beautiful and what a brilliant way to spend four hours walking.

Glad we came back to have a proper tour around
This is a fabulous place for views. We travelled through the Dams. What an experience! We had previously driven through, but not seen it all. It was October, so a quieter time and easy to drive around. There's a different view round every corner. We visited the tourist centre, which is such a good place, with a great cafe, well stocked shop and an informative film about the dams. Also lots of parking available, a children's play area and walks. Definitely would recommend a visit

    Stunning in autumn
A rainy stormy day in the gorgeous autumnal colours1 We drove around the dams and there are little stop off points, some passing places. We only did two of the dams and will take dad back for a look at the third when we are back in the area. Beautiful views, amazing engineering and good for the soul!

    Spectacular!
Well worth the walk up from Rhayader. Craig Goch is particularly impressive with the water cascading over the top. Caban Coch was dry when I visited, but the bright green moss on the face of the dam makes an interesting photo none the less.

    Unbelievable views
The views were amazing. The engineering feats unbelievable when you consider these were built 120 - 80 years ago. Although freezing cold and almost a gale we had an amazing day. The car parking is cheap, the gift shop is reasonably priced and everyone so helpful and friendly. Will be returning on a warmer day.

    Absolutely stunning
This has got to be one of the most truly mesmerizing scenic places I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. We stayed on a local camp site for the half term. After the first day where it just poured down we decided to go for a walk, well we walked, walked and walked some more. I mean there is just no end to the beauty every corner had some thing new. A hikers paradise.

    An Enjoyable Experience
Detoured on the way back from Aberystwyth and was certainly not disappointed. The Visitors Centre with shop and cafe is certainly worth a visit. The car parking charge of £3 per day valid in all of the Elan Valley car parks is excellent value for money. We visited (by car) all the 6 dams which are several miles apart from each other. Some roads are a bit narrow but passable with care. All in peaceful settings with beautiful landscape settings.

Stunning scenery. Look out for the sheep
Stunning scenery. Enjoyable if driving through but cycling, walking even better. The dams are just incredible. Lovely walk with the dogs. Slightly let down by the visitors centre which was more of a pricey shop than anything informative. Lots of signs up but plenty of idiots driving too fast and sheep on the roads.

    Incredible
An absolutely beautiful part of the world, a must see for everyone! We started at the visitors centre and got a map, then walked to the first dam Caban Coch. The weather wasn’t fab so we decided to drive the rest which was one of the prettiest drives I have ever done. We visited every dam, including the unfinished Dol Y Mynach which is the only one not viewable from the road so it took us a minute to find it but definitely was well worth the hunt. It’s a shame that Penbont house is closed as it would’ve been a good ‘halfway’ stop but we had prepared a picnic so we were content to carry on.

    Elan Valley.
We drove from Garth here today with the dog. First we visited the Visitors Centre were we picked up a map for the drive to the dams. We managed to see two of the dams which was interesting and one small church near one of them. The direction on the map were not very clear so another trip here another time is needed. Although going back to the visitors centre gave us directions for another time.

If you want a lovely day out walking, seeing the gorgeous countryside, rivers, streams, waterfalls and dams, this is ABSOLUTELY the place to come.

There's ample parking in the visitor centre, but there are also numerous free car parks dotted around the valley and within easy walking distance of the VC.

Drop in, get a map, then just wander...the valley is beautiful, the streams and rivers vary from little streams to deep rivers carving their way through stone. The dams and bridges are quite stunning and it's just a wonderful place to get some lovely photos.

Highly recommended for a long day out, or, if you're short on time, just wander up to the first dam near the VC and back again - you can easily do the "Pink" walk through the woods and back in about 30-45 mins.

While visiting mid Wales we had a short stop at Elan Valley visitor centre. Parking is free for 20 minutes but the parking meters still want you to pay the full fee for an hour so check the times before paying.
There is a small shop & cafe there & you can view the dam wall & river there.

A local person told us that this was the Lake District of Wales so we went to see and were not disappointed. The amazing scenery, both the dams and the valleys, were amazing and the extent of the Victorian engineering is to be marvelled at. Great visit and looking forward to returning.

We visited Elan Valley reservoir as it was quite close to where we were staying. It was easy to find and park up. The visitors centre looked very new and was very clean and tidy.
We spoke to a very helpful young man behind the desk who advised us the best route to take after asking us a few questions about how far we wanted to go, what difficulty of walk we wanted etc.
The ladies toilets were very clean and tidy.
The walk itself is literally right along side the reservoir. The path we took was mostly tarmaced and easy to negotiate. However, it is the scenery that is outstanding. I just cannot describe how lovely it is. Woods, open countryside, the terrain either side of the reservoir is stunning and the autumnal colours were just breathtaking. We walked all the way to the Ty Penbont, which is a hotel and restaurant. They offer a good selection of snacks, hot meals, cakes and drinks & was a most welcome sight after having been walking for best part of an hour and forty minutes. I have to say that the service was fast & fabulous as was the caffitiere of coffee we had and the Pumpkin Spice cake was delicious. Definitely set us up for our return walk back to the visitors center.
Overall we walked about 7.7 miles.
I can highly recommend this for a visit but make sure you have comfortable PROPER walking boots and suitable clothing as the paths are muddy at this time of the year. And the wind blowing through certain parts of the valley can take your breath away!

It was a boiling hot day (30 degrees) when we visited. We parked on the top of the dam. The views are incredible.
We then drove down and parked in the visitors centre, £2.50 for all day parking. You can then walk right to the bottom of the dam and up the one side and along lake.
You can hire bikes from the visitor centre too.

We arrived in thick fog! The visitor centre was well sorted out for Covid although the cafe was serving only take out food and drink - on a cold, damp day, it would have been good to have been able to have an inside table. It is likely that there was insufficient traffic to warrant this.
We took one of the short walks around the centre which would have been better if there was less fog, but we needed the exercise!
We then drove up valley to the dams and suddenly we were out of the fog into brilliant sunshine. Quite an unbelievable experience.

My partner and I came to the open dam experience yesterday
Weather was exceptional and after marveling at the walk through the dam we continued to walk coming out of the dam.
To think that the wall that holds the water back must be very strong and all this built by hand is just amazing.
We continued to walk along one of the many paths and had a smashing afternoon enjoying the peace and quiet and glorious weather.

I can not recommend a drive through the Elan valley to see the dams and the gorgeous scenery.

Each dam is very accessible and well worth the dive up through.

I would recommend going when you know the reservoirs are opened up and it’s a breathtaking thing to see how much water flows through them!

The Elan Valley is one of the most picturesque places on the planet.
6 dams all within close proximity of each other, the scenery just keeps giving on every turn. Cracking little information centre to get your free map then off you trot admiring all the dams, they truly are a work of art. Then egress through the mountain road so you get a spectacular vista on your way out. Stop off for a while and admire the beauty of this absolute gem. Rhayader, a charming little village is a short journey away if you're travelling from afar and want to stay the night. Enjoy 😍
