Many photo spots along the highway
On a sunny day this lake is turquoise blue and stunningly beautiful with Mt Cook at a distant . Besides the visitor center lookout, there are at least half a dozen lookouts for photos along the Tekapo-bound and Mt Cook bound highway. The later offers also great mirror views of the lakes / rivers on a calm day. Be careful of drivers stopping suddenly at these turn offs though !

    Amazing photo opportunities.
Amazing location. The views of Mt Cook are truly spectacular. The visitor centre can be busy worth a lot of tourists. The toilets are located there, a little smelly but still needed. Amazing place for photo and gazing at influencers doing their filming. Well worth the drive and journey.

Loved this lake! Quieter than Lake Tekapo
Such a stunning lake with amazing coloured water. The road wraps around the edge so easy to get beautiful photos. Personally I think the best views are off the road going up to Mount Cook village when you can capture the colourful lake and the mountains in the background. Quieter than Lake Tekapo with less facilities, but it’s a similar size lake and a nicer colour!

Beautiful lake - so very blue - and Mt Cook spectacular (from a distance)
The lake was stunning - a vivid blue evidently due to the melting glaciers and snow. The road to Mt Cook runs along the side of the lake and it's crowded with tour buses, cars etc. Finding a viewpoint that isn't full isn't easy. However, when you do the view is fantastic. Mt Cook on a good day is spectacular. Definitely don't go closer than the airfield near the mountain - from then on it's just wall to wall buses, campervans, cars, bikes and people by the thousand. It's better to stay well back and enjoy the scenery without the people etc. jamming it up.

NZ delivers once again! Lake Pukaki is simply beautiful, a photographers dream - especially with the snow topped peak of Aoraki/Mount Cook in the background.

We loved the information in the heritage centre about the Maori legends/drawings and the current uses for the lake.

After a peaceful afternoon nap at the edge of the lake (we'd been stargazing in the early hours - don't judge too harshly) we went beachcombing along the shore and even though the sandflies had an absolute feast on my partner, we still enjoyed dipping our toes in the refreshing cold water.

Most people road-tripping the South Island will come across this lake at some stage, as it's on the main highway between Christchurch & Queenstown. 100% worth pulling over and taking it all in, especially as on a clear day, you can spot Mt Cook on the other side of the Lake.

It's even more impressive to drive alongside the Lake on the way to Mt Cook Village - one of New Zealand's best scenic drives

As you drive towards Mount Cook, you will be welcomed by the glistening blue waters of Lake Pukaki which makes it a scenic spot that you simply cannot miss. I have never seen a lake that blue that it seemed almost unreal to me. Absolutely beautiful!

I'm sure had we been able to complete our itinerary, which included a couple of nights at Mount Cook Village, we would have seen a lot more of Lake Pukaki. However in April 2020 with Covid-19 lockdown restrictions in place we pulled into the almost empty Visitor Centre car park for our only brief stop on a 5 ½ hour drive between Wanaka and Christchurch Airport.

Exemptions for repatriation travel only permitted getting directly to an airport but with some snow on the mountain ranges and the correct light it would have perhaps been "a picture" worth capturing en route. The one we got was just "okay" but I appreciated the 5 minutes not being at the steering wheel!

One of the three lakes closes each other, Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki, and Lake Ohau. Now all of these three lakes are interconnected as the water network of Waitaki Hydroelectric Power Stations. Anyway it is nice scenery with distinctive blue turquoise colour water stretches along the horizon, ideal photo spot places. The small town Twizel is just 7 km south of this lake, while SH 80 run along its west perimeter, the only road to go to Aoraki / Mt Cook National Park Centre. Anyway people enjoy this lake usually not only for this lake, but as mid route break when their end destination is Aoraki / Mt Cook National Park Centre.

We stopped at a view different spots along lake Pukaki while driving from lake tekapo to mount cook. The area & lake are simply stunning. The lake is an icy blue colour with views of mount cook in the background. Definitely worth a visit.

We spent 2 days here camping at the DOC site on the lake. The weather was stunning and the scenery amazing. The colour of the lake is an amazing blue due to the silt in the water. The sunsets here were incredible and worth the visit alone. If you are cycling there are lots of trails to ride on including the walls of the canals which are lovely and peaceful.

We stayed at the Lake Pukaki Reserve Freedom camp site, and it was beautiful What a location. Waking up to those views was spectacular. There's a tourist viewspot closeby with an information place, toliets and an alpine salmon shop. It's worth stopping just for the view.

We stopped by the viewpoint on the Southern end of the lake to try and catch a glimpse of Mount Cook. We failed as it was cloudy but the view of the lake itself was also quite nice.
There is a fairly large parking lot so it was an easy stop. There was also a Salmon shop here as well as a visitors center with information and covered seating to look across the lake.

After our NZ trip, we must disagree with Rudyard Kipling's opinion. Milford Sound may be the 9th or 10th. Wonder of the world. But the 8th. place is deservedly booked for LAKE PUKAKI. BUfffff, one of the most gorgeous road sceneries we've ever seen.
And thanks to the different lookout points / areas in the same road because if not, the driver can't combine the sensastion of driving with the complete bewilderment by the beauty of the turquoise colur of the lake and Mount Cook's snowed peak image.
We enjoyed it, coming from Tekapo and taking the RD80 to Mount Cook Village. But three days later, in our journey back to Christchurch, we stopped again to readmire it. I also had the impression the same car obliged me to stop again.
This is not recommendable. It's a complete obligation to visit it
