Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a very large site with very little to actually do within the walls. Most places are occupied and were closed during our visit. The amphitheater was the highlight, but the best shot of it is on the road in from the west (outside the site itself). There are a few more things to see - museum & pillars - but none were standouts. We wouldn’t recommend that you make the trek from Amman just for Umm Qais, but if you’re driving around the north taking in some of the other sites, then it’s probably worth the stop.

I found this site to be quite interesting, though for the 2 hours it takes to get to it from Amman, it wouldn't only be worth it if it's on your route, or if you're doing a full day tour to include Ajulun Castle and Jerash as we did.
We had a guide for all of this whom could explain the site to us which was very good. I feel without a guide, you'd walk around in 20 minutes and be done.

Very nice site visited at the start of our stay. It is a great introduction and allows you to discover this Greek art of the cities of the Decapolis with this city of Gadara. Very beautiful view of Lake Tiberias and the Golan Heights. In the city there are the ruins of a magnificent basalt theater, a basilica. A cobbled street bordered by a double colonnade crosses the city from east to west. Umm Qais has the charm of cities with a rich history since it was in turn Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman.

We had this included in our tour after a stay in Ajloun. We knew very little about it before we started to read, but its definitely worth a visit. Its similar to Jerash but nowhere near as renovated or busy. There were about 8 other tourists there when we visited. We didn't take a guide and the Bradt guidebook we had gave us plenty of details.
The views over Lake Tiberius and beyond to Palestine and Syria were spectacular.
Looking back I'd have liked to have stayed a night close by so we could have stayed longer, but we had to get down the Jordan Valley to the Dead Sea that day (before dark), so an hour or so allowed us to get a sense of the place.
There's a lot of digs still going on.

I regret going there on purpose, an unnecessary detour. I wondered several times if it hadn't been redone for tourists. The view is not bad, but not exceptional, fortunately the signs tell us that we are looking at this or that country, because otherwise it's hard to imagine. Sometimes, we are told that we are looking at this or that thing, but almost nothing to see, sometimes, it seems that it is abandoned, a lot of grass...

Fantastic view to Galilee sea and Golan heights where you can see three countries near by from one place which are Palatine, Lebanon and Syria.
Moreover place includes Umm Qais ruins of Roman and Byzantine civilisation in one place. Access to area is 5JD for foreigners and 0.25JD (250 qirsh) for Jordanian. Free parking available. There is the longest underground tunnel closed at 4:00PM.

If you are looking for a great view of the Sea of Galilee and are unable to travel to the Holy Land, look no further. Umm Qais offers outstanding views of the Sea of Galilee, as well as ancient ruins. I highly recommend visiting Umm Qais to anyone visiting Jordan.

The chronological details of Umm Qays ruins details are easily available online. It is a must visit Roman ruin. Few points need to be noted.
1. Guide is not that essential for the tour unless you feel like helping the locals.
2. Easy climbing needed so refrain taking strollers. Wear comfortable shoes.
3. It takes around 30min if you want to go for a quick round but you may love spending longer time inside so carry water with you. There is no water or WC inside. (A new resort is getting built inside the fort area which used to be a school)
You will definitely like the sculptures built/ rebuilt in Roman, Byzantine and Islam era. City was destroyed during 8th century but still some pillars, amphitheater, obelisk street, Part of temples are still attractive.
Down the hill the greenery of the valley is spectacular overseeing the border of Syria, Israel and Lebanon.
Guided horse ride facility is available.

Umm Qays Archeological Site is very impressive for the Roman ruins and also for the spectacular scenery all around. It is strategically located in Jordan close to the Israel and Syrian borders. It is quite a long drive from Amman, but a day trip is possible with an early start from Amman. It is certainly highly recommended to any traveler interested in history and/or geography. Only an offbeat traveler thinks of visiting this unique archeological site.
