Join the White Island Tours crew aboard the luxury cruiser 'PeeJay' for a 6 hour adventure to explore New Zealand's only active marine volcano - White Island.

Sitting 49km off the coast of New Zealand's North Island, this is one of the world's most accessible live volcanos. With the majority of the volcano sitting beneath the sea it means we are able to disembark directly into the crater complex - no mountain climbing required.

Being a live volcano there is little doubt that White Island is home to New Zealand's most impressive geothermal activity. Visitors are able to get up close to roaring steam vents, bubbling pits of mud, hot volcanic streams and the amazing lake of steaming acid. The vivid hues of yellow and orange resulting from the abundant sulphur on the island make it a photographer's dream.

Experienced guides will lead visitors on a two hour exploration of the inner crater, providing a fascinating commentary on the geology of the island as well as stories of attempts to mine sulphur. Along with volcanic and geothermal features, you will see the remains of the sulphur factory which have survived multiple eruptions since being abandoned in the 1930s.

Once back aboard PeeJay there may be time for a swim from the boat before being served a light packed lunch which can be enjoyed while viewing the outer walls of the island where Pohutukawa forests grow and large Australasian Gannet colonies exist.

Our journey home often provides the opportunity to spend time viewing dolphins, whales and other marine life. We hold the necessary government permits to interact with these animals and it's a great way to end an already amazing day.

Tours depart daily (weather permitting) from Whakatane.

It was a great experience, however we were not allowed to get too close to the craters edge and couldn't see over, while a private helicopter tour group arrived and stood at the edge... if you have the money to spend then you are allowed to get close. What a load of rubbish. 2 boats went out, we were on... More

An absolute Must Do in NZ and a very unique, beautiful and incredible experience. It's an absolutely amazing location and the trip can be very relaxing. Gets even hundreds of times better with the sealife 😊

Couldn't afford the helicopter, so took the boat trip to the White Island volcano. We are so glad we did as this was a fabulous trip which was organised and undertaken well by the White Island Tours team. We were lucky with the weather and it was a smooth trip on a sunny day. Nevertheless, the White Island Tours staff... More

We booked our tour a month or so in advance and had no idea what to expect. Our experience on the day however was very good indeed. The tour was very well organised right from the start. Plenty of staff onboard the boat (Phoenix) to look after you for the hour and a half ride out to the island which... More

Amazing trip with White Island Tours - although the sailing was a bit rough! We sailed on the Phoenix and the crew was very helpful. The tour guides were very knowledgable and teven provided lollies to protect our throats. The island is amazing and a must see. We had to wear protective helmets and gas masks due to high level... This was fantastic. The volcano is awesome and super interesting. Well organised, great guides.Plenty of food in our lunch pack. The day we went it was pretty rough but we were well informed before hand so had the option of not going. I was terribly seasick but the staff looked after us reallly well. Still an awesome trip

Such a fascinating day trip. We took the boat over to White Island for the day and it was amazing. We experienced a small pod of dolphins chasing our boat which was a lovely experience. The island itself is fierce and quite hostile but in an amazing way. There is a high level of sulphuric acid which can be uncomfortable... More
