In this place you feel out of this world, catapulted into very distant times. Entrance costs 5 euros, only 5 euros for a guided tour by Filippo, a young archaeologist, who literally enchanted us with his professionalism, knowledge and transport, enthusiasm and love in telling us the history of this abbey (at the end of the visit I had tears and I wasn't the only one). Truly recommended with the hope that you too will find the great Filippo (whom I can never thank enough). Useful advice: if you arrive by car or motorbike, don't stop at the car park. Climb a little further up where there is the sword in the stone and a huge, completely free car park.

After many years and almost 2 hours of travel we manage to visit this beautiful abbey. Unfortunately, despite the entrance fee, the place is over-commercialized and you are unable to enjoy the experience. On the same day outside there was an art exhibition of dubious taste, inside, in addition to restoration scaffolding with lots of related noises and various visitors, a stage and countless chairs for rehearsals for a show with set-up traffic here too. And it seems that at least in summer events and shows are frequent. Here I would ask you to show more respect both for the visitors, for the place, and for the art and our heritage. There is a lot of space outside where you could set up shows and so on, leaving the sight and mind to breathe inside the abbey, which is also smaller than the photos seen so far, and its external courtyard is also beautiful. Instead, the Hermitage next door still enjoys the peace that is expected in these places.

The Cistercian abbey of San Galgano is a thirteenth-century church, fascinating and majestic.
Of this ancient Gothic church
only the walls and the apse remained. The roof collapsed in 1786 when lightning struck the abbey's bell tower.
When you are inside and look up at the sky you can breathe in all its history. It's just a shame that there are no explanatory notes. There is a guide included in the substantial ticket that you pay at the entrance, but you have to be lucky enough to meet him at the beginning of the explanation.
After visiting the Abbey of San Galgano, a visit to the Montesiepi hermitage is unmissable.

I visited this church because I saw the pictures on the internet and was fascinated by the place. I did not know that you had to pay the ticket and especially that there was the possibility of a guided tour.
I bought the ticket for the guided tour with a little reluctance because I thought there was very little to see.
How wrong I was! Philip, the Guide, was very engaging and knowledgeable, but above all he was so good as to get excited while explaining the incredible history of this abbey. Thank you so much!!! It is not easy to find young people so passionate about their work and who know how to transmit the love for what they study even to those who know nothing about archaeology.
The ticket cost 5 euros but paying 8 I really understood and loved this place. I think it's really worth it.
I also understood that in this way the abbey is not only protected but is still under restoration.
The ticket also includes the museum in the medieval town of Chiusdino, birthplace of the saint. By the way beautiful medieval center.
In the museum the only thing of interest is the reliquary that contained the head of San Galgano. At the bottom there are bas-reliefs that maroon the salient scenes of the saint's story.

The location is certainly suggestive and colossal within the green context in which it is located.
The abbey is moderately well kept, but unfortunately we can only talk about it based on what we saw outside, because for a visit, the price is perhaps a little too excessive.
Furthermore, next to the abbey there were countless billboards and advertisements for various photographic exhibitions in the vicinity, which unfortunately ruined the aesthetics and purity of this place.
As for the "Sword in the Stone" of San Galgano, located 5 minutes from the abbey, we were really surprised.
A very well-kept little church, with the information necessary to assimilate the legend of the Saint.
Free parking, and there is also a farmhouse nearby, with a bar and restaurant!

This beautiful abbey is about 40 minutes from Siena and is definitely worth a visit.

The entrance ticket costs 5 euros + 3 with the guided tour that YOU MUST DO!

The Guide who accompanied us was really prepared: Filippo, a young, passionate and very nice archaeologist, who will take you on a journey through time not only on the abbey, but on the whole history of the territory.

The ruins of the San Galgano abbey are both beautiful and moving due to the tragic history of the place and its relationship to major European history disasters (wars, the great plague).

You can walk around the ruins, see the sword the founding monk set in the stone (the reverse of Excalibur).

A great place for a walk and history lesson

We stayed at this abbey for a wedding. The place is enchanting and you never get tired of admiring its beauties from every side. It is not for nothing that weddings must be booked a year in advance and several are celebrated per day. A large area around the Abbey is a pedestrian area and parking is a bit inconvenient (dirt road, with stones...). Everything is fine, as long as it doesn't rain, because the Abbey has no roof, destroyed centuries ago and never rebuilt, but which makes it a peculiar feature. A small self-service bar nearby allows for the pleasure of drinking with a great view.
To be seen!

a suggestive atmosphere for a "timeless" place. a historical and fascinating narrative that involves you from the beginning to the end of the guided tour. Taking us into this world of saints and knights is the legendary Philip, known as Pippo, a young archaeologist who is certainly passionate about his work, but who makes you enjoy every moment of the visit, catapulting you into the historical era narrated in no time.
The Abbey is truly a masterpiece of history, an imposing construction that makes you savor what the Middle Ages could have been like in which it was built, in which it was abandoned, in which it reached its darkest moment, in which it returned to shine to become what it appears to us today in all its majesty. Thanks to those who suggested we visit it, thanks to Filppo for his skill and his culture. also don't miss the Hermitage containing the sword in the stone.. but that's another story....

The unshakable myth around the Abbey of San Galgano resists the passage of centuries unscathed, just like the legend of King Arthur and the sacred Grail (born around the Tablet of Camelot, round like the shape that outlines the contours of the hermitage) tells us takes you – incredibly – to a remote corner of Tuscany.
Some tireless followers even go so far as to hypothesize that the Holy Grail is hidden in the Montesiepi Hermitage (stubbornly sought by the Arthurian knights, hidden in a secret cavity under the floor).
This is what awaits you when you enter the open-air abbey: you immerse yourself in a very particular atmosphere. It seems like we are living in a parallel reality.
The entrance ticket costs 5 euros including the Hermitage at the entrance of which there is the sword in the stone (embedded in the floor and protected by a dome).
All very suggestive! Absolutely not to be missed!
