This is a beautiful, imposing and well maintained Aragonese castle which occupies a large part of old Otranto. The inside has some interesting findings, such as the library but has also empty rooms and some dedicated to non relevant shows.

Although the outside is impressive, the inside is just a bunch of rooms that are occasionally used for photographic exhibits. The gift shop is nothing to bother with either.

You easily find the castle in the old city center. While the entire part above ground is in very good condition, it does not offer too many exciting features. Probably the best is the city panorama. However, the much more interesting part is the guided tour through the cellars. Here you learn more about the history and experience how the... More

It is a glorious she'll to be sure. The conceptualization and construction of these strategic resources by the Aragonese to protect the Mediterranean routes is amazing. However, mostly they are repetitive and can be viewed externally. A member of our party was mobility impaired, so we opted to walk around and look but not pay the Paltry €3 for access,... More

A very well preserved fortress which is the basis of the visit to this site. In the middle of restoration work, this site will be a very welcome addition to this very nice town once the work is completed. Great views of the sea and surrounding area once you get to its highest parts and it is well worth the... More

The castle has an interesting layout and there are always exhibitions going on... You have a 15% discount with the city guest card

Very interesting exhibition of the photography of Steve McCurry. Paid €10 each to get in. Somewhat small castle with very little information regarding the history of the fortress. Lovely views from (almost) the top, sadly you aren't allowed up to the very top.

We paid EUR 3/person entry fee only to find out that all the rooms were empty and/or being renovated. It's certainly not worth it.

You can't miss the castle when you visit the city. Looks magnificent from the outside, but there is little to see on the inside. A good photo stop while in town, but that's about it, unless you have a guide to explain the history.

The Otranto Castle is a mighty fortress (not coincidentally the omonymous gothic novel by Horace Walpole, 1764, takes place here), in which the oldest part of those currently visible (a tower and partially the walls) is the result of work undertaken by the Aragonese kings of Naples, from 1485 on. In 1480 Otranto was conquered by the Turks, led by... More
