This museum is definitely worth a visit, good English translations and easy to follow, there is a lot to see here so allow a couple of hours. It gives a great history into the development of Hokkaido. Beautiful grounds to walk around.

Went there December 2015; Be prepared at least 2 hours plus for the visit. There are a lot to see here ; please kindly take the broucher/guidance before entering the premises. We also took a lot of photo due to the excellent winter view in December. This place really worth a a visit if you ever been to Hokkaido.

This is No. 1 attraction in the entire Abashiri region. It’s partly because of the fact the prison has been featured in many Japanese movies in the past 50 some years and everyone in Japan has somehow heard about it. Unfortunately, it was mostly about the yakuza (Japanese underground gangsters) movies. And that was the extent of our understanding about... More

This is not your typical museum where you just enter a building and walk around inside. So try to go on good weather because there's quite a bit of walking between the 'attractions'. Not everything had English translations but enough for you to know the basic background. Like why it was built, how so many prisoners died constructing the roads... More

Staff were great. From the beginning to the end I found the Museum interesting. It provided information, signs and exhibits in English. Leave a couple hours to cover it all.

We were really impressed by the lay out and preservation of this place. You get a really good sense of the prison as it was and what the men did in their daily lives in the prison. Not a huge amount of English in the signs but more than enough to get the gist of each place and "attraction" (there... More
