Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The diving experience was absolutely amazing. It was our first time scuba diving and Abilio went through everything with us, about the equipment and safety rules. We started out in the natural rock pools, which was amazing. He took us one at a time to make sure we were comfortable and then together around the pools. Saw quite a few fish and crabs. We then went into the aquarium. He took us in one at a time, so the other person could do photos. He looked after us really well and made sure we were comfortable. I got to stroke this really large fish, who loves to have cuddles, I stroked a moray eel and held a lobster. I swam with the rays and in with all the fishes. The sharks were fairly small and more skittish and stayed away, but you felt close to them. I can't recommend this experience enough.. it was breathtaking and glorious. A memory to treasure. Thank you Albilio for taking such good care of my husband and I and making it so memorable.

Biggest rip off ever. You have seen the whole place in just 5 minutes.
We paid 3x7 euro’s and we felt so bad afterwards.
Only the big aquarium was some sort of cool. You can’t waste your time, but do waste your money.

The tanks were way too small, there was only a single tank that was deeper than a meter and that was the scuba diving tank. Multiple fish were swimming in a constant loop, one was swimming sideways at the top of the tank. Some of the smaller tanks looked dirty. The sharks had a visible infection/fungal growth on their sides and tails. One of the rays was stuck in a corner at the top of the tank. One of the tanks had a french fry dropped by tourists. The price was cheap I guess... (5e for groups, 4e for students and pensioners)

We usually have a wander around when we visit Porto Moniz. There is a child-like fascination of getting up close and personal with sea life. It's small and doesn't take long to see. I would like to see the information boards more relevant to the life in them - in the big tank there are many large fish including sharks that you cannot identify.

I wouldn't go out of my way to visit this one, but it was okay. Small, not much variety, a big shark tank and the information display is good. A good place to visit for an hour or two, but no more than that.

We booked a diving experience for 2, we paid €80 each and it was worth it. The activity lasted half a day, first diving outside in the stunning natural pools then inside the aquarium. Very friendly instructors. Would recommend the dive, the aquarium itself is really small and maybe not worth the drive.

I cannot understand why people can give this more than one star. Half a dozen small tanks and one very large tank with rays, sharks etc BUT that is all you get. 7 euros each for a 10 minute stroll. We could not have walked more than 20 metres around this small ground floor of a fort.
We felt like asking for a refund but are too polite as holidaymakers to do this. My advice is to not waste your money on such a futile example of bad tourism. I only hope that these reviews will help tourists not to be ripped off. Such a shame to spoil our holiday.

Don't go. Even if it's free. Which it is NOT. There is one large tank that has a lot of the same three species. Then there are about a handful of smaller tanks and pools with the same damn three species. The information placards say there are far more varied species in the tanks but I assume all but the hardy species have died. I am a bit of a nut when it comes to fish and fishkeeping so it's not a case of me not seejng the fish hiding in a corner of the tank. I think the staff don't have the experience to keep more delicate species alive, and the tranks are too small. Don't go. Or go and complain. Really disappointed.

Most of the tanks are too small for the fish, one of them was even ill, nerviously slamming to the glas of the tank. We told the people working there but they didn't care...
All in all: it costs 7-8€ (depending if you want to pay 1€ more for a totally boring extra ticket for a science museum) and is totally not worth for what you get!
There are 6-7 tanks with fish, and most of them are not kept animal friendly.

TRUE TO ITSELF

I'd read about Aquario da Madeira on @tripadvisor and it gets real bad reviews; which I believe to be unfair. It's true to Madeira it's not commercial it's showcasing the varied species of the ocean that surrounds the island!

If you've children they'll watch for 30mins fascinated by the numerous species swimming in the tank. Looking for the fish from the charts to see if they can spot them. If in Porto Moniz on a rare cold day this will keep the family happy no end.

Visit with an open mind remembering we as humans are the cause to the pollution onslaught of the sea and what little admission money we give goes towards conservation.
