Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Unfortunately the beauty of the Crete Senesi can be savored in an hour. The towns of Asciano and Rapolano are neither interesting nor pleasant nor a very good area to sleep in. And visit the province of Siena Vera which is fantastic

I simply don't understand the fuss and reviews on the basis of this being a classic Tuscan view as it isn't; the best views are to be had from the hilltop towns and include vines, olive groves, rolling hills with mountains beyond punctuated by cypress trees and old buildings. This however is a far more bleak and desolate landscape with eroded clay escarpments as scars on a normal cultivated agricultural area.
It is on route to a number of very attractive places to the south of Siena so if passing through the area you are going to see it but I would not go out of my way for this.

We drove this area after reading a Rick Steves guidebook where he highly recommends a loop drive south of Sienna. It is absolutely beautiful countryside with very little to mar the views that go on for miles. No photo can really do it justice. We went in May when everything was green, so I didn't think there was anything that I would call a lunar landscape. We stopped for lunch in Asciano and visited the monestary. We probably spent 5-6 hours for the entire trip and it was well worth it. I don't, however, think this is something you should worry about doing on your first, or even your third, trip to Italy as there are so many other places to visit that have so much more to offer. We were staying in the Tuscan countryside for the first of our two-week visit and had no specific itinerary, so this was a perfect use of some of our time.

We recently (late sept) went through Asciano going from Siena and eventually winding up in montepulciano. What amazing views generally from both sides of the road. The camera got a workout. Not quite what one expects in tuscany. The grey fields were so unusual although my agriturismo owner noted that in the spring when the wheat begins to grow, the fields are lush green and the whole area look like a golf course. A must see if you're anywhere near Siena.

If you are looking for classic Tuscan views of lone cypress trees, rolling fields of greens and multiple shades of brown punctured with the white of the sharp ridges, isolated farmsteads with drives line with trees - then drive through The Crete. It is stunning and there are places to stop safely and take those wonderful pictures. There are a number of routes we started at Taverne d'Arbia and headed towards Asciano. Some of the roads are twisty and some are very narrow but it is well worth it. End the trip at Montalcino and you will be rewarded with the views from the Fortezza, a lovely lunch and excellent wine - this is the home of the Brunello. Driving back - the shadows and colours will have changed so you'll have a whole new set of photos to take.

Beautiful rolling hills, farms and crowned by Siena--a spectacular Renaissance city. Winding roads go through tiny towns and by monasteries, wineries and lead to lovely villages, such as Montalcino.

The Crete Senesi, the spectacular landscape between Asciano and Siena, is definitely one of the most spectecular regions in the world. Unesco inheritage, stunning views and sometimes really dangerour because people stop their cars wherever they like in order to take the picture of their life.

What a wonderful drive we had through the Crete Senesi, especially between Asciano and San Giovanni d'Asso. The landscape was so green and was punctuated with swaths of wheat, fields of yellow rapeseed (used to make canola oil), and poppies. Here and there the clay soil peeked through the green, providing an interesting contrast. If you're in this area, seek the road less traveled and explore this beautiful landscape.

Buonasera, quali sono i punti panoramici migliori?
Written 25 August 2021
Buon road trip.

We will be driving north through the Crete Senesi in the late afternoon and watching the sunset around 7pm in late September (need a good spot for this). Question, what is the best route? Coming up SP60 to Chiusure. After Chiusure, should we then go back to SP60 or go over to SP451 for better landscape photographic opportunities? After stopping in Asciano, we are heading to lodging just south of Siena. Should we continue to follow SP438 north to SS73/SS223 for more photographic opportunities or just head over to SR2 after Asciano? Also, Rick Steves suggests stopping at a nursing home in Chiusure for a photo op of the abbey about 1.5 miles from there. I found one on Google maps called Casa di Riposo Gesu' Redentore. Can anyone confirm that's what he's referring to? Thanks for your help!

Written 29 May 2017
