Great place with amazing reconstructions of 6000 years old stoneage houses. Very friendly staff, really engaging into dialog. One of the places you must visit if you are visiting lake Constance.

It is a super site with lots to see. The replica houses were great and gave a good idea of what it would have been like in Prehistoric times. However, for people who cannot speak German or only a small amount of German as we do, you miss a lot of information. We were taken round by a guide who only spoke German and we could not follow what he was saying. We bought a book in English as a previous visitor had said it was difficult but we could not read it while the man was talking in the huts as there was not enough light. After you leave the huts with the guide they lock them up so you cannot go back. I tried to engage the guide by asking a question and explaining I was English but he replied in German and I still did not understand. There are some huts that you can go in by yourselves without the guide.What I suggest is that they get audio guides which can be switched to different languages and that would add greatly to the enjoyment of non-German speaking tourists..

We arrived just as a German language tour was starting. The ticket seller recommended that we join it because two buildings can only be visited by tour. We were able to understand most of the lecture in the first building since there were a lot of visual aids and we understand German better than we speak it. In the second building, it was much harder to understand since there were few visuals. We left and explored the rest on our own. There are some English explanations, bur they could use more.
They request that you not take photos for some incomprehensible reason and that is one of the reasons for my less than excellent rating. While the museum is interesting, there is not enough to warrant a second visit.

We visited Pfahlbauten today with our children, aged 3-15 and two adults. There was something for everyone and it was an informative and enjoyable couple of hours. We spent longer there than we expected. We enjoyed wandering around the recreated village, and the views over Lake Constance were beautiful. There is a nice kids' playground just outside and several places to eat - we enjoyed some excellent, good-value ice creams.
Practicalities first - parking is a nuisance and it's no good following your satnav to the museum, because unless you are disabled, you can't park there. You are advised to use the public car park at Unteruhldingen Ehbachstraße . This is a pay & display park and it is about 5-10 minutes' walk away, on safe, level pavements. There is a little land train which runs regularly as an alternative to walking, but we left at the same time & got there faster on foot!
You enter the museum through an audio-visual experience which was great fun - the kids were begging for another go. There is an English soundtrack, so the staff put this on for us - do ask, as they are accommodating.
Some of the information boards are in English, but most are currently in German only. I suggest asking at reception where you can find English info before you start exploring as you will be able to get more out of it that way, perhaps. There is a brief info leaflet in English - do ask for this, as we were not offered it automatically.
Apparently you can ask for a guide to take you round and give you a tour in English; I am not sure if there is an extra fee for this, but we tagged on the end of a German group and then wandered on our own. Various of the houses are set out as museum rooms with artefacts, and these are kept locked and just opened by the tour guide, so unless you tag along with a tour, you won't get to see everything. You can peep through the windows (the houses are lit inside) but I'm sure the tour would have been interesting.
There were none of the special children's activities such as the 'Be an archaeologist' sessions mentioned elsewhere, as these are, I think, only put on in school holidays. Regardless of this, our kids enjoyed wandering round and the younger ones loved the houses which were set up with displays of people and stuffed animals.
We left feeling that this museum had been done very well. It is the sort of thing you don't find in Britain, and much more fun than just looking at photos of the original remains which were found. The museum is just about 4 Km away from Meersburg so would combine well with a day exploring the pretty little lakeside town.

It is worth visiting and getting to know the life of the people of that time. an extremely interesting history lesson told interestingly by the guide.
Sometimes shows are organized, e.g. the last time I was, the gentleman showed how to light a fire and how to build a house.

Spent 2-hours walking through this wonderful outdoor museum. We didn't speak German, but joined the German tourists with a German tour guide. Some signs had English writing, but we still enjoyed the tour greatly. We took the ferry from Meersburg (buy a combination ferry/museum ticket). We recommend this museum to young and old.

Pfahlbau Musuem, Unteruhldingen, is the name of a major tourist attraction on the shores of Lake Bodensee (aka Lake Constance). In 2006 there was apparently a German TV show where a couple of families lived for 8 weeks in the way their pre-historic ancestors did. A replica village was built on the Lake as a reminder of those days and to present the life in a typical village. We’d seen it from the ferry and it appeared to be a number of wooden structures built on stilts and connected by narrow walkways, also on stilts above the waters of the Lake. Our initial observation wasn’t too far out. But both the interior and exterior of the buildings were on display and were very well done.
While queuing for 20 minutes to enter the building and purchase tickets, we were informed that tours commence every 8 minutes and even though you did not need to be in a group to wander the village, you did need to accompany a group to enter one or more of the buildings. These directions were delivered in German and we were reliant on the woman to translate them for us. Guides also imparted information in only German which made being part of a group redundant-other than to access the interior of buildings. A second woman said there was an English explanation of the village and presentations on show for an additional 4 euro on top of the entry fee.
The village was well done and we enjoyed about 45 minutes of seeing how our ancestors lived in an environment based on the Lake and fishing. I think it is good that some of the crafts used in those days have been revived and there is an active component of the village that promotes learning these skills.
I felt we could have got a whole lot more out of the visit had we had information provided in English (if not an English speaking guide once or twice a day) and this is something that the managers should address if they want the good name this attraction has to spread to the English speaking world.

We are driven to enhance our possibilities for our visitors from English speaking countries. Since 2011 we changed a lot in the museum. Now we have installations, exhibitions, guides in English.

We visited the museum and were very impressed with the multimedia introduction and the friendly and informative description of the various buildings. All of the content was very interesting and the museum makes for a very nice stop in the Lake Constance area. Any family should definitely take the time to visit this little gem.

This museum is really interesting in that it shows the life of people of the Bronze and Stone Ages who lived in pile dwellings - something you don’t find in many other places. It is one of the sights included in the €109 Bodensee Plus card which is promoted to German speakers and foreigners alike. However the visit begins with a guided tour only in German. If you don’t speak German, you are not allowed in on your own, so you have to spend half an hour in a large group, not understanding anything. The first part, the Archaeorama, has a lot of German dialogue and not much to see. Then you move to houses which you can’t access except in the group, and again there are lectures you can’t understand (and the group is too large for you to see all the exhibits). When you are finally allowed to explore on your own, there are explanatory panels in English both in the reconstructed dwellings and in the museum display area. You can also buy a guide in English or French for €4. They need to rethink how they receive foreign visitors who don’t speak German, as the first 30 minutes makes a bad impression and is a complete waste of time. After that, it’s good.

We expected to see some houses in the sea. But there is so much more! It is worth every cent. So many details, it is incredible. You can nearly feel how it must have been.

Where would be the best place to stay overnight to visit the open air museum and the mainau flower island. We will be coming from zurich. Are there bus tours to the museum?

There are a lot of possibilities in Unteruhldingen to stay overnight, hotels of course, but also accommodations available via airbnb. If you stay in Unteruhldingen, it is just a few minutes walk to the Museum or to the ferry harbour.

Is it necessary to book in advance to see this museum? Do they have a published timetable of English speaking tours? What happens if we just turn up? We're planning for June 2018.

You don't have to book in advance. You can just come and wait for next tour. At the time we visited they started about every half an hour, if I remember well. We decided not to wait as there is a lot of information panels, unfortunately not all in English, but still enough to understand the history.
