About
Is a 55 acre property of which 44 acres form a premountanous wet forest. Twenty seven acres are used for the guided walks and 17 acres are not tampered with at all to preserve the biodiversity. The remaining 11 acres are still pastures in the process of reforestation. The Refuges’ location on the top of the Tilaran mountain range and in between the pacific dry forest and the Monteverde cloud forest makes it a very important biological corridor used by many species daily in search of food or refuge. This makes it an ideal location for birwatching for species like the quetzal, bellbird, mot-mot, manakin, toucan, oil bird and many more; land animals of various species like monkeys, agoutis, coatimundi, olingo, sloth, wild cats, frogs, snakes and a large variety of insects. The Monteverde Wildlife Refuge is also one of the pioneers of the guided night walks in Monteverde.

Our night walk in the Monteverde wild life refuge was ok. It was very windy, it must have affected the wildlife. We saw few birds, tarentula, scorpion and a mini iguana who look like a snake. On overhaul the kids enjoyed it.

Booked a night walk tour but the transport didn't arrive. The company apologised and offered me another tour but I refused as I didn't want to be stood around waiting for a second time. Very poor. I would not recommend this company.

It was a lovely walk through the night woods! We had three kids in the group and they all were engaged and interested. Our guide was fabulous! Jose was clearly very passionate about nature and had great knowledge to share with us. We were lucky to see snakes, slotha, toucans, humming birda, tarantulas and other beautiful creatures. Thoroughly enjoyed it!

It is literally taking a walk around someone's backyard with a guide that's making an effort to stretch a 10min walk into an hour and a half of wondering around, and you get to see possibly nothing: supposdly we saw a couple of snakes: one did move the other one might have been a plastic toy wrapped around a branch, then we "saw" 3 types of birds which could easily have been stuffed animals tied to trees, then get this we spend around 30 min talking about the most common type of ant in costa rica and how they make lines to carry food, you might think that could be interesting for someone else, let me say it again, most common leave ant in costa rica , you don't need to spend 20+ dollars to see them and have someone explain that they eat plants, make lines and have a queen.
I spent $20 in this and i am native, foreigners often times are charged more, so please trust me, I am strong lover of nature, wild life and hiking, Costa Rica is a great place with a lot of beautiful places to go, Monteverde also is lovely and has a lot to offer, so please do not waste your time and money on the night tour on this place, you will feel as sorry as i am to not have tried something else, I will try another night tour which I heard is good, as soon as I check it out I will post a review.

We really enjoyed this. As others have indicated, group sizes are small and guides communicate with each other so key sightings don't go unseen. We saw a sloth, 3 green pit vipers, 4 tarantulas, a large caterpillar, a scorpion, a "sleeping" hummingbird, howler monkeys, blue morpheus butterfly and several other insects/bugs.

Firstly, we so wanted to love this. We love nature, and viewing it in it's nature environment. But there was nothing 'natural' about this night tour experience.
Firstly, it was very disorganised. It took forever to get everyone into groups. We were left waiting for at least 20 minutes after the first groups left. This meant that the others were traipsing over what can only be described as someone's garden, very noisily. There was no noise control at all. People were even using flashes disturbing the wildlife.
The guide was fairly average, giving no background on the area, types of animals that live there, or on the creatures we saw. Very poor.
The saddest part was watching a poor sloth harassed by the torches and camera flashes of 50+ noisy people as it tried to move as quickly as it could along a power line.
Really disappointing.

This was a highlight for me and my two little ones (10, 6 years old). Tour is completed with a guide and flashlights for all who attend which is provided by the tour however may not be a bad thing to have your own good flashlight. Tour lasts approx 1hour 30-45 minutes. There are paths so it’s not walking through jungle worrying about bites or otherwise. No significant strenuous hiking/walking. In March is worth wearing a jacket. We saw all sorts of things including sloth, scorpion, side stripe viper, howling monkeys, sleeping hummingbirds and many other insects and birds. It was fascinating and kept every second of my young kids attention. I would do this again no doubt

We booked the night tour when we were still in Arenal and paid$30 per person. The night walk was magical and after everything we have seen in Costa Rica this remains my favorite tour. You walk for 2 hours with a flash light up and down the forest, so wear good hiking shoes. You may or may not get to see some interesting animals- we saw a green viper, 2 toucans (one sleeping, the other awake), tarantula, spider, some other birds, etc-- but the highlight was the sloth with the baby. They are much faster than you imagine, especially when they want to avoid 50 tourists trying to take photos/videos. But what I liked most about the tour was learning a lot about Costa Rica's flora and fauna- from root trees that take over their hosts, to how grass-cutting ants army-like structure, it was all fascinating. Our guide Jesus was absolutely amazing- never have I met someone so into his job, best guide so far. Just walking through the woods at night is magical enough (with flashlights with the guide of course), but the highlight was when we sent to the spot where you could see the sky full of stars. We all turned off our flashlights and enjoyed the starry night for few minutes- I have never seen sky so full of stars, it seemed almost white. Unforgettable.

Excellent guide who made sure we saw a variety of flora and fauna.
Small group making taking pictures easier.
Great to see a scorpion under ultra violet light.
Amazed how quickly the time went.

We are visiting in February. Would like to do a day hike and a night hike. Wondered how we can reserve ahead, and if a guide can be requested. We took a tour with Ricardo a year ago and he was wonderful.
