At one point in time the Okhala Bird Sanctuary may have been good but now it's not worth it. I have been there once and was so disappointed that did not have the courage to go there again. To be frank I did not find any positives about this place so let's list down the negatives. The first put off is locating the entrance. It's like a game of hidden treasure. There are no signboards, so if you are going there for the first time, it will be more of soul searching, even after you have found the entrance. Second, if you have taken your vehicle then park it on busy road connecting Kalindi Kunj in Delhi to Noida. And pray all the while that no one messes with your car. Third when you enter be really shell out a fortune, especially if you are carrying a camera. It Rs 500 bucks. Your woes won't end there. As you enter the park, the stench of the Yamuna greets you. If you ever want to know how polluted the Yamuna is, go to Okhla Bird Sanctuary. If you can overcome the stench try locating the birds, if you can. I for sure could not find any, except for some cormorants in tbe far distance. The area around the park has seen so much human intervention that I guess birds too have deserted the place. There is a half complete high rise, where construction has been stopped, right at the gate of this bird sanctuary. In short avoid it going to the place. There are much better options in Delhi NCR.

you will not catch lovely birds here. so be careful. do not waste time to visit here.
fees are also high . you will totally disappointed. still if you want to visit then come in morning 6 am to 7 am . that is the best time to see whatever birds are there as birds rise early.

Known as a haven for over 300 bird species, especially waterbirds.
In 1990, an area of 3.5 square kilometres (1.4 sq mi) on the river Yamuna was designated a bird sanctuary by the Government of Uttar Pradesh under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. The site is located at the point where the river enters Uttar Pradesh. The most prominent feature of the sanctuary is the large lake created by damming the river, which lies between Okhla village to the west and Gautam Budh Nagar to the east.

1.firstly there is no place to park vehicle.
2 there was only a gatekeeper to change for the entrance fee and I was told by him that he is all alone in the sanctuary. There were carts at entrance but no driver. There was nobody to guide us or even help us in taking us around.i wonder how the government runs sanctuary without staff or it may be that they take salary from govt and stay at home.what a shame .

Paid 350INR as a foriegn tourist just to see Birds in posters and some signages... Didn't get much clarity with my inquiries...Had some long walks (Benefits of Perspiration😂) seen 1 real bird and numerous love birds (dating couples🤣) loitering their food wrappers and plastics.
You'll enjoy more visiting their website than visiting the actual place.
I love walking though...please bring umbrella in case it would rain and youre in the middle of the road... or hid under the trees and bushes 🙄

1. I visited Okhla Bird Sanctuary (OBS) on 6th Nov’14
2. OBS is spread around the wetlands on the border of Delhi & Noida. In fact the entry gate to the sanctuary is from Noida side.
3. From Gurgaon, we may take the Mehrauli road and take a right turn at IIT Crossing (Essex Farms) and cross Nehru Place, Kalkaji and take a the Faridabad road. After crossing the Apolo Hospital, take the left turn towards Kalindi Kunj – Noida road. The entry gate to the OBS is on the left side about 100 metres after crossing the Okhla barrage. From Apollo Hospital, the entry gate is about 4 Kms.
4. OBS has a huge water body which attracts water birds like Moor Hen, variety of Duck and Stork.
5. The entry charges for an Indian tourist is Rs. 30/- (see attached photo). No fees for camera (unless it is for commercial or business purpose).
6. It is believed that OBS is home to over 300 variety of birds.
7. OBS has put up informative signage about the inhabitants of the sanctuary.
8. Tourists are permitted to take their car inside OBS from 8 am - 5 pm. But for a avid bird lover, it is better to walk / trek so that we can listen to the sounds of the birds.
9. The best time to visit is early in the morning. Many persons could be seen enjoying their morning walk at OBS.
10. There is a tar road about 3 Kms. long. It runs parallel to the lake.
11. There are 2 watch towers right in the middle of the wetlands. To reach the watch tower, one has to walk along kaccha roads, cross a bamboo bridge, and then walk on a small path through tall grass on both sides. It is a very good place and the approach to the watch tower is very interesting.
12. We saw a variety of birds like Eagles, Painted Stork, Egrets, Moor Hens, Babblers, Peahens, Starlings, Mynahs, Parakeets, Warbler and other Water Birds. I believe we saw the Spectacled Warbler.
13. We also saw variety of Butterfly.
14. Okhla Bird Sanctuary is definitely worth a visit especially in the winter months of November, December and January.
15. Do remember to take along water and some light snacks.
16. PLEASE BRING BACK THE TRASH IF ANY. DO NOT LITTER THE SANCTUARY. LET US KEEP IT CLEAN.

Thanks to the effort of some ardent birdwatchers, this park was saved from being closed down to make way for malls and other such developments. Though surrounded by the DND flyway, the park has an assortment of swamps, lakes, marshes and trees, with a bund that has smaller plants, all great spots for birds. Birds are nesting here which means they feel safe and that is a good sign for bird population. Ducks, Stilts, herons, kingfishers, Bitterns, and even a mongoose! we saw it all at 5.30 am. A lovely watch tower helps to get a better view of bird activity, and at that hour only the serious and quiet watchers are around. A nice trip to undertake if you are on the east side of Delhi.

Okhla is a bit hard to find since taxi drivers do'nt seem to know about it, but if you can find a taxi or tuk-tuk driver who is willing to get you to the general vicinity and then ask directions, it is worth the visit. For an urban sanctuary, it is excellent -- lots of ducks, geese, herons, shorebirds, and even a fair assortment of passerines. It would have been better if I'd had a better spotting scope (my traveling scope only goes up to about 25X), but as it was, I had an rewarding five hours.

A beautiful location, has a status of National bird Sanctuary. You need a vehicle or can walk the 4 km. The place needs habitat protection, public fund and water for the migratory season.
More people should visit, share their experiences on all the birds and continue the process of learning more about migratory birds. The season has just begun with the brown headed gulls, the spot billed ducks, avocets, lapwings, stilts, peacocks, arboreal birds. A good seasonal location to spend time. You would need a binocular, camera, water and food to keep you company. The Metro runs till apollo and then the auto can drop you off at the sanctuary.

I have a pigeon with one wing, as it was attacked by some dog. I have treated the pigeon for about 2 months bt no sign of wing coming back. Can i leave it in the bird sanctuary so that it can be comfortable with other birds and enjoy nathures beauty?

Nature works on "Survival of Fittest". If you wish to go against the natural process, keep it with you. At sanctuary it will not ne able to find food fighting against of its kind. Moreover, i have seen domestic dogs inside sanctuary.

Authorised car parking available? if yes then charges?
Written 25 March 2018
no authorised car parking available. but mostly people park right outside the gate by the road. I usually go from the Okhla Barrage side and park on the road. And one would usually go pretty early morning to this place so theres not much traffic.
Written 27 March 2018
Its a bird sanctuary, very close to the city. Yes its true there probably are no changing rooms or any other public facilities in the premises. Its not like bharatpur where you have a information centre and guides and facilities and bikes on rent etc... this one you can walk all the way through to the other side.
However you will find a few watch towers.
