We were visiting Cromwell, and wandering around came across this museum.
We spent sometime talking. to this lovely lady called Ann what a wealth of knowledge she was. You need a bit of time it might, look small but goes on and on. Wonderful. A gold coin donation

We stumbled across the museum and so glad we did. The lady managing it was friendly and helpful. We spent over an hour in their and the museum gives you a better understanding of the area and history.

This museum is one of the best for its wonderful displays and information relating to the Gold history and the area and the demographic history. The quality of small town museums never ceases to amaze me and in the main they are staffed by enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers. Well worth adding to the donation box at the entry.

For Kiwis and tourists alike, visiting this Museum is a must, when in the Cromwell-Clyde region.
A particular attraction is a scaled model of old Cromwell showing clearly the extent of flooding of the town. See also displays on the history of the Gold mining industry, early pioneers, and the Clyde Dam.
Entry by gold coin donation.

This small museum offers a very well organized collection of historical objects, nicely shown in a well-coordinated display. Staring with archeological displays going back centuries, it recapitulates the pre-European Maori history and culture. Then offers a good overview of the gold rush times and mixed cultural influx and the resulting cultural mix that predominates today. Of interest are the details of the construction of the Clyde Dam which resulted in the intentional flooding of old Cromwell town and surrounding orchards.

Coming from Northern Ireland we found this museum of particular interest. Our guide was quick to show us the connection between the street names in the old town (now rebuilt in the Heritage Centre) and our home country and we were fascinated by the historical background, even down to the naming of the town. We were given a quick overview of the main sections of the museum and then allowed to study what interested us in more detail. Having visited Arrowtown recently the section on the Chinese mining community was of particular interest. We also loved hearing about how Lake Dunstan was created and the knock-on effects on the town. The motor car memorabilia were fun and coming from the generation that grew up with the spread of motor transport it was great to draw parallels with our own experiences back home.
I liked the idea of entry being free and then being able to give a donation based on our enjoyment of the visit. Thank you to our guide, whose name I cannot remember.

Tucked away in a depressingly dated town mall, the Cromwell museum is a little gem. Good quality and informative exhibits are complimented by genuine and friendly people at the front desk. It's not big, but well worth a visit if you're passing by Cromwell.

Popped in to see the new display and I was impressed. There is a new display depicting "How we Got Here" . Giant photos are displayed on the walls and there is a very dinky real vintage car and motorcycle. Well done to the volunteers who have made this a evolving museum.

Where do you go when you want to learn the history of somewhere, the local museum, the man on duty was really helpful, filled in the bits that the displays didnt tell you, pictures on the walls told stories. Well worth the visit and entry fee is only a donation.
