El Hacho Summit-Great Trek
Jun. 2019 • Friends
El Hacho is a double peak mountain at 1,011m. that overlooks Gaucín. It is a great three hour scenic trek and a relatively strenuous workout, just right for working off tapas and Albariño. The first third is a straightforward walk up a mountain path. The second third is a moderate trek with more elevation and a somewhat unstable path. The final climb to the summits is mostly steep switchbacks with enough incline to make the footing tricky...slip sliding away is not an exaggeration. There is not enough height off the trail to really fall, but falling and sliding on the trail is possible and comes complete with all sorts of thorny vegetation. The views of Gaucín and the surrounding mountains and valleys get better all the way up. There is a summit register in a plastic bag within a metal box in the rocks on the southern peak and a geodetic marker on the northern peak. We saw a total of three other hikers on our trek. The views, peace and tranquillity warrant lingering on the top. The trek down is worse for the loose trail so linger longer at the top to enjoy the experience before the tricky but much faster descent.

A fabulous 'moderate' walk up with brilliant views
Jan. 2019 • Couples
A great half day walk up a steep reasonably well signposted path ....about 3 hours to the top and back from Gaucin petrol station. Views of Gib, Morocco and across to Jimena de la frontera are worth the climb. Cafe/bar Nacho at the bottom opposite the petrol station has a magnificent terrace and the chocolate orange cake is highly recommended!

Above the Eagles, Wow!
Oct. 2018 • Friends
As soon as we entered the village for a 10 day stay, I wanted to scale this mountain overlooking Gaucin. After a initial easy start the terrain gets a little steep and slippery towards the top. There are two peaks one with a Spanish trig plate on it, which I am embarrassed to say a fellow countryman has scratched his name on! The other has a Spanish flag. The views from both are absolutely stunning, we were lucky to see about 15 Eagles flying close and below us, this is a must do if you are into a bit of hill walking and the pint afterwards was very welcome.

start from behind the petrol station. initially an easy walk on a rough track. it gets a little more demanding as you get higher. after about 45 mins you reach the top and "wow" was it worth it. 360 degree as far as you can see.

This restaurant is ideal if you want freshly made and tasty tapas. During our two week stay in gaucin my girlfriend and I enjoyed food here on 3 occasions. Friendly service and excellent atmosphere. Family run and they really care about the restaurant

What a view!

The front of Cafe - Bar "El Hacho" looks like a basic shop front, just opposite the petrol station as you leave Gaucin, and the cafe itself is cosy, but the terrace has a fabulous view up to the town and over the valley down as far as the coast. Gaucin itself is a must see in Andalusia, and it was lovely to be able to sit and appreciate it as we left. El Hacho is a pleasant cafe, with friendly service and tasty, simple food.
