Built in 1534, it was the residence for the prince-electorates of Saxony who supported Martin Luther's Reformation ideas. The Castle Church is the first Protestant church to be built in Europe, and was personally consecrated by Luther in 1544. The Castle therefore has tight links...More

Our exploration of Castle Hartenfels was limited to a brief walk on a cold and misty evening with our guide from the Viking Elbe River cruise. The most visible building in the city of Torgau, the three story white castle was constructed during the 15th...More

Arrived in the evening with our cruise ship and walked up into Schloss Hartenfels. It's worth a climb up the spiral staircase to view the area, and the staircase itself is quite striking. Torgau itself seemed VERY quiet and non-touristy, but quite lovely, sort of...More

Walked from our ship into the town and visited several interesting buildings. Although we were quite late in the day we still managed to walk into the courtyard which was really impressive.

Entry to the castle itself is free but you pay to get into some of the exhibitions. The free entry means it's worth popping in even if you only have a few minutes to spare, just to admire the large central courtyard with its impressive...More
