For 40 ZAR (plus 5 ZAR to park your car safely in front of the harbour wall) you get as close to a huge gannet colony as you will anywhere. Watching from the observation deck you can appreciate the comings and goings of these handsome birds. Just as we were about to leave the young attendant in the hide asked... More

We were happily surprised to see these exotic, beautiful birds and a big group of seals in the background. They really made an effort with the small museum and outlook post. However, there were no pinguïns, this wasn't told to us when we bought the tickets, bit disappointing.

Bird Island is the home to thousands upon thousands of Cape Gannet. The bird hide makes it fairly easy for visitors to get close to the birds. Close enough to hear the noise en smell the birds. There are trained staff available to help and educate visitors and you can also visit a display and interpretive centre. I would strongly... More

What a show! The hide is well situated to give one the opportunity to study these magnificent birds from close without disturbing them.

What a noisy, smelly and totally fabulous experience! To see so many gannets squashed into such a small area is incredible. The most interesting part for me is the take-offs and landings. to watch them gather speed and finally take to the air from the 'runway' on the edge of the site is exhilerating. And when they come back making... More

We were amazed at the number of Gannets and how close you could get to them from the observation deck. When we were there the younger one's were just finding their wings and we spent ages watching them use a take-off runway at the edge of the colony. Most made it into the air, but some failed and had a... More

We were totally surprised by this experience. Being nature lovers, this was a beautiful "outside" experience. Everything is very "clear" the layout, maps, walkways. The information boards on the left hand side on the concrete, when you enter, was very interesting. I enjoyed the info on the kelp forsts etc. Watching the gannets was awesome! Walking on the pier with... More

Amazing to see. Lovely photo opportunities from the double-storey viewing deck. Noisy and smelly but well worth a visit. The walk along the breakwater is fun at high tide.
