A beautiful national park with numerous trails of varying grades to suit serious hikers and families with young children. The granite boulders and various watering holes are picturesque and we saw kangaroos relaxing in the morning sun unbothered by us whilst on trail. We visited on a Friday morning, it was very quiet and extremely chilly, made the experience even better. Good amenities. Was one of the highlights of our trip to the region and definitely worth visiting again.

A great walk for kids and adults. The information centre is right at the main carpark and the rangers are really helpful to help plan out which walks to do. The walking paths are well maintained and signposted. Keep an eye out for kangaroos!
Follow across the most amazing rock formations that just feels so ancient. Make sure to do the Pyramid walk and scramble up the granite cliff for an amazing view across the valley. Truly breath taking in more ways than one

We’ve been here many times, this time exploring Underground Creek and Dr Roberts Waterhole. Both are reached by easy walking trail, quite level. Plenty of flora to enjoy on the way. Great granite boulders to admire. Take the camera!

Bengu and Paul have been doing it tough since assuming the ownership of this property. They have been shouldering the downturns of the drought, the fires, and now the pandemic. In spite of it, they have made notable tasteful improvements to the property and the chalets. We stayed for 2 weeks during the escalation of lockdowns and border closures. What a lovely place and environment to gain some respite from the constant bad news. The park is recovering well, and the regrowth has been tremendously beautiful. The kangaroos, bring laughters out loud! Flowers will be spectacular in spring if the world opens up again. They deserve all the return visits again and again. Support them soon!

The Girraween National Park is a must do when you are visiting the Granite Belt. There are walks for everyone, from some that are just a few hundred metres long to some that are pretty challenging and will take you the best part of the day to complete.
Pretty much all of the walks begin at the Bald Rock Creek day use area, which has ample parking, public toilets and a number of picnic tables and areas. There is good signage about the walks that are available and if you haven’t already picked the walk(s) you want to do this will help you decide.
We chose the “Granite Arch” walk, which was a 2km-ish circuit. The trail was very well maintained with a few hills and stairs but nothing too challenging. The granite arch itself was really cool to see, but the whole trail is surrounded by massive granite boulders and there are lots of photo opportunities along the trail. We really enjoyed the walk and would recommend it to anyone who is able to navigate stairs and uneven ground.

This national park was beautiful. Walks vary in distance and time - choice of just bush walking or climbing the pyramid. The Pyramid climb is very steep and very challenging especially if it has been wet weather - moderate fitness required. I was not prepared for the shear steepness of this climb and did struggle with the height but getting to the top was really worth the tears on the way up. Would definitely recommend wearing proper hiking footwear - I wore my trainers and it was very slippy. Overall a great day out and a must see in Stanthorpe.

I drove out to the Granite Belt from Brisbane for a weekend to visit Girraween for the first time & do a few hikes. I stayed just over the NSW border in Tenterfield which is a half hour drive from the Girraween trailheads.
On the first day I focused on the Northern Walking Tracks doing Granite Arch & The Pyramid - the latter was an awesome adrenaline adventure, climbing up steep and exposed rock face to the summit. It’s called the Pyramid but it was more like a giant semicircular dome (for a proper pyramid, check out Walsh’s Pyramid @ Gordonvale). Near the top is aptly named Balancing Rock, a great photo op. At the top it was quite windy and cold and also very exposed. I met a few people up there scared of heights who said they found it a bit scary. I found it got the heart racing and it made me feel alive. The views are spectacular.Coming down is probably hardest as it is steep and flat with no hand or foot holds in places so you need shoes with good grip and to go slow and slide down on your butt in the steepest sections. People shouldn’t even think about doing this when wet.
On day 2 I did the Castle Rock walk from the Southern Walking Tracks trailhead. This is 5.2km return and ends with a similar exposed rock climb up to Castle Rock. It’s actually higher than the Pyramid which you look down on from the summit but the walk up is not as steep and exposed (though it is still very much both of those things). Up the top I walked around to the various edges for the best views and a crow flew down to my backpack which I left near the middle and started opening the zip & pulling my shorts out with its beak!
Wildlife was abundant - I saw at least 15 kangaroos on the trails and at the car park area. And there were crimson rosellas up near the top of Castle Rock. And I met and chatted with several couples in both hikes who were lovely, fun people. So beautiful and next time I’d like to camp nearby & do more hiking.

We did the Dr Robert’s Waterhole and Underground Creek walks. It was very interesting to look at the regrowth after the recent bushfires. The granite boulders are beautiful to look at and the adventurous are able to climb over them. There were a number of waterholes, some with tadpoles and other wildlife. It was a gentle walk which could be completed by most people. It was a very pretty area, with a number of different types of terrain.

We stayed in self-contained accommodation just outside the Park and spent a week out each day walking and/or cycling in the Park. It is a spectacular and unique place and we were impressed with how easy it was to get around and see it all. Biggest day was 55km (MTB and Hike) and shortest 10km (all off track hiking). In addition to all the usual places we strongly recommend visiting South Bald and West Bald Rocks and the loop around the headof Racecourse Creek

What kind of gradient is the walk to the Granite Arch? Sadly I've hurt my knee and anything needing a downhill walk aggravates it... thanks for your assistance.

It’s pretty easy, although with any bush walking there’s uneven ground in places. Hope that helps.

is there any water available at Castle Rock campsite Girraween? September 2020
Written 12 September 2020
Yes there is! There are taps. But the water came out brown... We didn't use it for drinking, just washing up and to fill hot water bottles. There's also taps in the bathroom to brush teeth etc
Written 13 September 2020
Hi. Was the water holes easily accessible and how far was it from the parking area. We are going next month and unsure of this area.
Written 10 February 2017
Sorry delay

Is there hot water available at the Castle Rock camping ground of Girraween National Park??? I see there are hot showers but is there a kitchen sink or other tap that I can collect hot water from?? thanks :)
Written 17 January 2016
The hot water in the showers are set on a 3 minute timer then cut out. There is no hot water in the wash up area, just cold.
Hope this helps.

How do I get from Brisbane to Girraween National Park using public transportation?
Written 14 September 2015
Hi,
Their are a few bus lines that do runs out to Ballendean; e.g. Crisps. You may have to find your own way from there as I can't find any tours you can join from there. It is fairly remote. The turn off to Girraween NP is just a turn off on the main road, and while well sign posted, it's not in a town - although technically, according to the map, it's at Wyberba.
You may have some luck in finding a local tour operator who goes there in Stanthorpe? Try contacting the tourist information office in Stanthorpe - you can contact them on 07 4681 2057
I hope you enjoy it, it is a beautiful place.
Cheers

Do you need to pay the per person camping rate for an 11 month old baby? We are planning to stay at Bald Rock Creek camp ground in Girraween and wanting to know to include her in our booking, or if I just need to pay for my husband and myself. Thanks for any advice!
