About
At Tobin Wines, we talk about growing our wine, rather than making the wine. Our wine making philosophy is undeniably ‘old world’, all respect is paid to the vineyard, the vine, and the pursuit of perfection in grape quality, with little if any reverence paid to the winemaker or wine making process. Each grape variety is given the spotlight to truly reveal its own unique flavour. “No wine maker is gifted enough to make those wonderful flavours & aromas all of the work happens out there, in the vineyard” Adrian Tobin. The production of our wine is limited to between 100 to 160 cases of each varietal every year. Our Limited Edition wines express their origins in the rugged and majestic landscape of the Granite Belt making them truly unique.

    Wine tasting and winery tour
We stopped by on a whim and we were not disappointed. We had a great and informative tasting with the winemakers wife and learned alot about the local area and their wines. I really enjoyed tasting 3 shiraz from different blocks (super interesting to see the differences between them all - Block 2 all the way for me). Even better was the opportunity to do a tour our back through the winery. They were in the middle of the ferment for their red wine and we got to see the wines in each phase (still on skin), active ferment and secondary ferment (malolactic). The wines were at the pricier end of the region, but reflected their quality. Thanks for an amazing afternoon.

Makes wine tasting a great experience.
I have driven past this winery many times going to other well established wineries in Ballandean. Glad our tour took us to Tobins this time. What a great experience. Possibly the best wine tasting “ show” I have ever been to . Made it a fabulous day for our group of 9 and the wine was good too.

    Exceptional Wines
Had a structured tasting with Ian. He was an exemplary host (and Operations Manager / Co Winemaker) and the wines are superb quality. The 3 Block Shirazes were so good we sent one of each home. Thanks Ian!

Having travelled Australia and visited many of the cellar doors in the country this one ranks right up at the top! Ian and Sarah were so informative and truly very proud of the wines produced from this vineyard and rightly so! Mr Tobin's wines are first rate. The tasting was well beyond what was expected presented with passion and knowledge of the area.

In September 2021 my wife and I enjoyed a very pleasant one week stay in the Granite Belt region of Queensland staying in the delightful Fergies Hill Spa Cottage, located in the Granite Ridge Winery at Ballandean.

Our three point plan was simple. Relax in a vineyard cottage, enjoy the many tourist attractions in the area and of course “visit lots of wineries.”

Ballandean is 20 kilometres south, south west of Stanthorpe (the main town in the Granite Belt) and is 240 kilometres south –west of Brisbane, about a 3 hour’s drive away.

In all we visited twelve wineries in the area. It was not possible to visit all fifty. We tasted and purchased some pretty reasonable wines, white, red and sparkling at each. The wines in the Granite Belt region of Queensland have come of age all of a sudden and with over 50 wineries in the region the wines have come along way in quality since those pioneer days in the 1970s when there were no more than 2 or 3 very basic wineries on offer.

Of the twelve wineries visited, my wife and I both agreed that Tobin Wines at Ballandean, was the stand out winery.

So, what made the visit so special? For starters, you usually have to book in advance because they don’t cater for mass crowds with their tastings. In our case we did not book in advance but called unannounced. The staff indicated that we would have to wait for the next tasting session because they had enough people in their cellar door when we arrived. We were happy to wait because when our turn came around, we and two others then received a top personalised service with the wine consultant.

In a most civilised way the staff provided a fresh, fine wine glass for each tasting. There was a glass for red wine and another for white wine and the tasting portions were generous. A bottle of water was also provided to drink in between tastings.

The staff went to great lengths to explain each wine being tasted including the history behind each wine and the wine’s production. Nothing was rushed and we were treated like VIPs to be honest. Our wine tasting session lasted around 45 minutes and we left with a very good impression about this winery.

A highlight was to be taken into their impressive wine barrel room where wines at various stages in their development were being stored. We even got to taste a wine that was not quite ready for final production, sampled from one of the barrels. This enabled us to get a good comparison between a final wine and one not quite there.

I ended up purchasing two of their wines which I really liked – their Merlot 2020 and their Isabella Semillon 2019.

Tobin Wines was the last winery we visited on our one week stay in the Granite Belt. Given the very special service and attention we received at the wine tasting here at Tobin Wines, we both agreed most enthusiastically, that we had “saved the best for last”.

Very helpful, friendly, generous with tastings, so hard to choose. Charlotte Rose won! So light, like rose champagne!

My daughter from Darwin & I spent our birthday weekend together in July. We visited Tobin winery & decided to each buy the Charlotte Rose. When I opened mine recently I realised I was given a Semillon instead of the Rose. Rather underhanded or not checking? Not a happy customer.

Human error occurs from time to time and product is replaced free of charge when an error occurs. Underhanded? Never the case. Apologies for the mix up.
