Buyukada the big island used to be charmingly tranquil. It is still a vist to the 19th century with lovely architecture and pine forest but it has become a tourist factory. There used to be few horse carriages, now there are plenty and some drivers...More

I did not expect such a nice church and this on an island just outside Istanbul. A little climb, but so beautiful and gives you another view on the city...

The horse carriage will drop you at the foothill and then there's 1km steep walk. Quite steep. The church itself is quite small. Like a one room establishment. I don't recommend taking the pain. But I did since I wanted to take the hike.

I visited this little church 3 years ago and now I again visited it. The islamic government put some restrictions and rules while visiting the church which are very similar to visiting a mosque.

If you are visiting Buyukada you should definitely visit. It is almost an hour by walking from the centrum. If you prefer to go by phaeton it only takes 15 minutes. You have to climb almost 900 meters (that was the hardest part) on foot.

It's interesting to see an orthodox church still going in Turkey and the interior is small but ornate, so go in if you can. Even if it's not open, go for the great views from the mountain, even if there are heaps of screaming Turkish...More

Visiting Agios Georgios (Saint George ) Monastery at the top of the hill in Buyukada Island is a must. The spectacular view towards Istanbul and Marmara sea redeems the effort. It’s about 3 km from the port. All these who love walking will enjoy ascending...More
