About
In the center of the picturesque town of Reguengos de Monsaraz, you can visit one of the world’s most unusual wineries. Keeping alive a tradition initiated by the Romans over 2000 years ago, the Jose de Sousa winery is equipped with 114 clay amphorae, a fermentation method as rare as it is old. The old cellars are below ground level and contain the urns and two open lagares for treading the grapes

Well-structured tour by the guide, with plenty of information about manufacturing processes (industrial and manual). A little impacted by the fact that the vineyard itself is not visited and the production process is not taking place, but I imagine that this is always conditioned by the time at which the visit takes place. We took the guided tour in English and the guide's level of English was good and she was perfectly clear and able to answer all the questions. The wine tasting itself is in a pleasant room, the wines are of good quality, the sausages were a little too fatty, we tried others in the region with less fat and equally tasty. Compared to other visits, the price is a little high, I think that given the size of the winery and the conditions mentioned here, they should have a different price depending on the time of year.

Atenciosamente,

Very nice, proactive service to organize the tour. The tour itself was highly informative and interesting. It was our first time seeing and learning about wines made in clay pots, which we found so special. The winery takes part in sustainability initiatives, which they informed us about prior to our trip, so that we could collect used corks for a good cause. Highly recommend!

We are wine enthousiasts and have been visiting producers in France, Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal. We chose to visit this winery because of the clay pots which we never saw before.
The guide was professional and instructive through out the visit and tasting.
We found the price fairly expensive for the 3 wines and some biscuits. We would have expected some cheese or ham for the 25€ adult price. Especially considering kids have to pay also and there is no discount in the shop when doing the visit.

Excellent tour and tasting with a knowledgeable guide! I enjoyed seeing the old and new wine making techniques and learning about the history of the winery. The wines I tasted were excellent, and based on that I purchased my favourite bottle as well as one I hadn't tried; it was also quite nice for the price! This is an easy recommendation. Do a tour and tasting here!

Wonderful tour of a small, but unique winery. The winery does their fermentation in large centuries old clay pot. We had a semi- private tour, with one other couple. Our tour guide from the winery was very knowledgeable.

We did a tasting of 3 “premium” red wines- all tasted amazing

The Adega was in the town where we were staying and we were able to walk to it very easily which meant we could both relax and enjoy the wine tasting which clearly is a bonus. The choice of tours was very good too. It is a lovely venue, with a small garden area containing the same vines that are grown on the main estate. Our guide explained about the differences in the grape types & their skins. The tour took in modern and traditional wine making methods and visiting the older part of the winery where the amphorae are stored was both interesting and atmospheric. In the wine tasting area great care had been taken to ensure COVID-19 guidelines were adhered to but it was done in such a way to not interfere with our enjoyment of the experience. Our guide was very knowledgeable, she was very easy to talk with and she answered all our questions very well. As for the wine, I have not found wines from the José de Souza winery in the UK which is regrettable however, all the more reason to return because they were all very, very good and different to each other from easy drinkers to one's deserving of fine dining.

We visited the José de Sousa winery on Sunday and loved the experience.
We were accompanied by Sofia who was an excellent guide, very competent, 5-star professionalism and immense friendliness.
He gave us a complete visit, we learned a lot, with very interesting details. Always available to answer our questions.
Excellent service.
The support in the store was equally great, where he explained in detail the differences between the various products.
We will certainly recommend this visit to our friends and we will not forget "our" Sofia, who we still talk about today.

We visited the winery about 1 hour before closing time. Unfortunately, it was not possible to taste the slightly younger wines, even against payment. The nice saleswoman did not want to open partout wine for us, so we only bought two bottles “on suspicion”. Very very poor service.

Good afternoon dear Customer, Thank you for taking the time to write this comment about your experience at Adega José de Sousa, which will certainly be taken into consideration. The prices of the wines presented in the wine shop, both for tasting and for purchase, are all displayed and the brands duly explained. Limited edition and/or small production brands are not available for individual tastings. We leave it up to the customer to taste or take the brand and consume it at home. We're sorry that your experience with us didn't meet your expectations, but we hope to be able to welcome you back at the next opportunity. See you soon! Sincerely, Ana Lima.

We were a group of 19 people. The opinion was unanimous. Not pleasant. The person who made the visit was arrogant and not friendly. He spoke very quickly as if he was debiting what he memorized. He didn't answer any questions and always said he would talk later. The wines in the tasting also did not fill the measurements. It is important that the person making the visit is empathetic and explains the doubts instead of debating.

Very interesting visit with a fabulous Guide, the Ligia, who explained everything very clearly and responded quickly to the questions that were asked. Excellent interaction, an excellent professional.
It is very worth visiting this winery and get to know the various processes of making wine, especially wines.
The proof, after the visit, confirms the quality of the wines they produce.
