About
Uvita Surf Lessons with Bodhi Surf + Yoga has provided personalized surf instruction for over a decade. There are two factors that make learning to surf with us more enjoyable and effective; The beach and our methodology. Playa Colonia is one of the best and safest beaches to learn how to surf. The ocean bottom is sandy and lacks hazards such as large rocks and reefs. The surf lineup is uncrowded and sits within a beautiful and tranquil Marine National Sanctuary. The waves are spilling waves with gentle slopes and take more time to break. Our methodology has been developed during our 12+ year history. It is informed by the International Surf Association as well as the 50 years of surfing experience of our instructors. We keep our student-to-instructor ratio low at a max of 5:1. We don’t just teach you how to stand on a surfboard or push you into waves. Our goal is to help you become an independent and confident surfer as well as a responsible steward of our beautiful Mother Ocean.

Great location, super cool vibes. Travis was very accommodating and worked with my schedule even though we didn’t have the numbers for a class. Luis, my instructor was chill, supportive and just about perfect at pushing my boundaries safely. My only downside was my own. Should have prepared better cardio. I plan on some more individual lessons as soon as the surfs right. Next trip I hope to bring my wife for some yoga classes. I don’t think you can go wrong with these folks.

Myself and my husband travelled from Canada with surfing on our list of things to do. Travis was an amazing teacher with so much knowledge of the ocean. We were taught so many things and by the end of our trip were able to rent boards and successfully catch some waves on our own. He was so easy to work with and an all around great guy! We will be back in 2024 with our daughter to take the five day clinic for sure!!

Thanks for sharing your testimonial! We are stoked that you had an "Amazing two day surf clinic!". We take our surf instruction seriously (but still know how to be fun) and love that you successfully caught some waves on your own when you rented the surfboards. Hopefully, we will have you down here for a weeklong Bodhi Family Surf Camp.

We brought our 13 and 16 year old kids to try surfing for the first time. Spencer was an awesome instructor. Both kids loved it, and can’t wait to go again. Would definitely recommend!

Amazing experience with Bodhi! We can't recommend them enough. The instructors are so kind and knowledgeable...and we always feel taken care of when we are with them. This is our 4th time (maybe more? I am losing track now) with Bodhi. Each time we go to Costa Rica we prioritize scheduling family surf lessons. Spencer, Travis, and Adrianne (along with all of the other instructors) always make our experiences so enjoyable. After learning with Bodhi, my husband (in his 40's) feels confident enough to go out on his own and catch the green waves. He now rents a board with them while the rest of us do lessons. The beach (national park) is world class, breathtaking...the most amazing setting to learn to surf. Whether you are an expert surfer or just starting out, this is a great place for all levels...and you can be sure you are getting "top notch" instruction. Thank you to everyone at Bodhi, and we look forward to coming back!

The teaching methodology they use walks you through reading the conditions, assessing any hazards and, hopefully, starting you on the road to being a surfer, not just a tourist on a surfboard. Spencer was totally awesome! He could watch us as we tried, see where we were perhaps struggling, and had a way of offering advice that truly helped. I was stoked to actually stand up and “surf”, but was even more excited about what I learned about the ocean and how to play in it safely! Thanks Bohdi, it was fantastic!

Thanks for sharing that our surf lessons are "Way too much fun!" We work hard to make sure our methodology incorporates reading the surf conditions/assessing hazards so that you walk away from the surf lessons feeling empowered to continue your learn-to-surf journey. We were able to get a 2 hour lesson for myself and our 2 kids, 12 and 8. (sadly mom had a bad knee) It turned out that Travis, the owner, was free for our lesson and really made it such a pleasurable and educational afternoon. We got a tour of the Bodhi HQ and stories of how everything came to be in this cool community of Uvita. We received excellent instruction for all of our levels, and my wife got to tag along and enjoy the beautiful beach at Ballena. We were happy to be able to use the surf hats and rash guards and to be able to shower off once back at the HQ. Travis did a really great job of talking through the physical as well as the mental aspects of surfing to make it meaningful for the kids.

HIGHLY recommend Bodhi Surf + Yoga! The entire team is communicative, professional, and beyond helpful. Spencer, Travis and Anki went above and beyond to make our stay in Uvita an amazing one (even helping us find urgent care on a Sunday when our daughter had a sudden and serious allergic reaction). Our trip would not have been the same without this incredible team. Now you know why even the locals recommend Bodhi!
