Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Great local pub with a front bar and a dining room out the back (same menu in both I believe). A good idea to book as it's always heaving whenever we've been there.

We ate in the dining room on Mother's Day and had a great meal made even better by Jake who was serving us. It looked like he was running the show by himself but he was still super helpful and humorous.

Quite a few vegetarian options which is great, good range of local beers on tap and it's a super cosy spot in the cooler months.

We walked the entire 30 metres from the Mountain Goat Brewery to hang out here to get some good wine and spirits. This is one of those cool, funky pubs that is a fave with locals. The lighting and vibe is fantastic and for a few of my hipster friends, they were in love immediately.
We started with expresso martinis, then campari, then G & T, red wine, beer, white wine - you name it, we tried it. We played billiards for most of the night and I haven't laughed so much watching the competitiveness of everyone. Others in the group snuggled on the couch near the bar with a big fluffy pillow and mood lighting.
We didn't eat here so I can't comment on the food. Think we left around 1am, can't remember.
Staff were great. Good at taking away the empty glasses and patient with our complex orders. We never felt we were being hustled to leave or move off the billiard table.
Parking can be tricky. Otherwise, it's a must visit.

Went with a mate to catch up for a beer. The Royston has great selection of different craft beers and is a great spot to grab a drink.

Went out for drinks with friends celebrating a birthday. Place had lots of ambiance and character. Snack food was ok nothing special. What was so weird we had to pay an additional $5 for being too loud. Give me a break we are in a bar celebrating. It’s not the money, happy to put more for a tip, but telling me that we were to loud, what do they expect us to do sit around and suck on a lemon. You wont see me and my friends attending again.

Enough menu choices even though not huge options. Serves not too big. Nicely cooked. Good & friendly service. Great value.

We had travelled from Brisbane to celebrate our daughter's 30th birthday at the Royston Hotel, at Richmond. Reviews had been good and it had an old-style attractiveness about it from the outside. I checked the menu - seeing that Thursday Night was stick night special! - and decided to book.
Arriving 15 minutes early I was a little concerned because the bar was full of 'young' people, which I daughter thought was 'cool', but the dining room had two people in it - my daughter and her mother. But, that was just the beginning. The service was very good, helpful and informative - and speedy too - and the food was splendid. My wife said it was the best calamari she has had, and to convince her is a hard ask when eating out. The waiter brought out the gluten free menu and she was beside herself at how much and how good the food was that was on offer - not just kale and quinoa.
A great night in every way - we will be back

we were taking an friend out for lunch- could not find a park at the usual pub.
so drove around and found a park close to the Royston.
Decor looks sad- and so was the male who served us that afternoon.
hardly greeted us- could not explain the meals or drinks very well.
Yet there is style in the Royston ambience and it must have something as there was barely enough room for a table of three- there were many large parties of 5 plus all- eating and drinking. so it must have something going for it.

My wife really enjoyed the linguine whilst us males enjoyed the rocket burgers.
overall we had a good time-
But the staff could that they enjoy their work and leave you wanting to come back.
would we come back- lets say it would not be our first choice to do so

We've been here a number of times and have always been impressed. Yesterday, the place let itself down. The food was ordinary and dry, served by staff who were efficient, but gave the impression they wanted to be anywhere but working at the Royston. The rather poor wine list is overpriced for what is there and the craft beers, which used to be very good, have become pedestrian and at premium prices. There was gum on the floor and the toilets needed a whiff of something better than what was there. We had the "take it, or leave it" impression. It might have been Father's day, but they were not rushed off their feet. No value for a relatively large bill.

Had read reviews, and was totally disappointed. The Bar appears to be the in spot with a younger clientele. We eat in an old Dining Room, that looked like it was set up for bigger groups. If a couple had walked in I don't think there were tables for 2 etc.
Anyway the food was only average. Had a Steak, a bit tough, and came with a stack of Chips and a handful of Cabbage Salad. Well the Cabbage Salad was literally sliced Cabbage. That is not a Salad, where was the Tomato, Cucumber, etc. etc. You can do better that that. An old Pub meal would leave you for dead.
Never again.

We have usually visited They Royston Hotel for Craft beer week, but chose to return for the good service and there's always a variety of good craft beer. It never disappoints, and today there was the Coconspirators tap takeover and found the Porter was very good and had a great lingering flavour.
